Places to see between Strasbourg France and Verdun

In a few weeks my fiance and I will be travelling by car in France and staying in Strasbourg. We plan on spending a day driving from there to Saint-Mihiel, where I know for certain my grandfather fought during WWI, and then work our way up to Verdun. I'm not certain he was there, but believe he may have been. We are looking for additional things to do/see on the way to or from, and in these areas. I saw on this site that we may want to visit Belleau Wood and Reims. Does anyone have any additional ideas? We wouldn't be opposed to finding a winery, for example, if anyone could recommend one on or near this route. Thanks in advance!

How many days do you have between Strasbourg and Saint-Mihiel?

Between Strasbourg and Verdun is Metz. If you do a search here, you'll find that I made two reports about it -- one for the city and one for the Pompidou Center.

I agree with Kerouac (not for the first time) that Metz is worth a couple of leisurely days. It shows strong Germanic/Belgian influences, meaning a different slant to both the rooftops and to the food, and more enthusiasm for good beer.

We have decided to spend a night in Reims and 2 in Strasbourg. Sounds like we should stop in Metz coming or going at least.

Thanks kerouac and Southam for the replies.

Nancy is another option.

Nancy is also quite nice, but it is a detour if you are plotting a trip on the A4 autoroute.
