Places to cover in Switzerland in 8-9 days & then 5-6 days in Austria

Me & my wife wish to travel to Switzerland & Austria for 15 days in the first 2 weeks of October.

We are in our late 40s & are interested in exploring each of these places - experience the local culture, historical sights, experience the city life, stay or visit a typical Swiss town & of course enjoy the natural beauty.

It is our first trip to Europe and we are interested in scenic locations - blue skies, beautiful hills and the much raved about European countryside. As first timers we would like to check out the major local tourist attractions as well.

Would like to get suggestions on which areas would be best during October.

It will be great if someone can suggest places to cover & how many days at each place.

Is this itinerary a part of your original question?

Hello,

Austria and Switzerland (especially the Bernese Oberland area -Mürren) are two of my favorite countries. But in October a lot of the mountain trails in Switzerland will be closed and the temperatures will be cold/rainy/snowy. Austria (Vienna and Salzburg) will still offer an amazing cultural experience especially if you are into history and classical music. The only times I have travel in Europe during the month of October, I have gone to the most southern location: Greece. Hope this help!

Weather is always unpredictable in the Alps. October is usually on the drier side (last year, there was no significant rainfall or snowfall in Switzerland until Christmas).

The first half of October is usually busy in the Swiss Alps (school holidays in the German speaking part): all lifts are running and all mountain restaurants are open. Things will change towards the end of the month.

You have another thread already that covers this trip - now that you have given up on Prague:

I suggest you stik with that one rather than to duplicate everything here.

I am finalizing our Austria trip plans and I agree with Michell above. I read a lot of Q&A's on this and other travel sites, and bought or borrowed some guide books (love the pocket size ones). I also went to YouTube to search for videos, and googled locations to find blog entries about them. Then I bring specific questions to this and other forums. Saves me and everyone time. And, it's fun!
I envy you Switzerland, we were unable to fit it in. As for Austria, we are doing 4 days in the salzkammergut and 3 in Vienna. Not enough, I'm sure.,.
