Place to stay in Venice?

Hello,

My husband and I are traveling to Italy the first couple of weeks in May. We will be checking into a hotel in Venice May 3rd and checking out May 6th or 7th. I'm learning that it's a little late to book a place to stay. Lots are already booked.

I've already researched the forums and have checked venere.com for the places you have recommended. Lots of these are booked, however, or are too expensive. We would like to keep it to $100 - $200 a night. $150 range is ideal.

We are in our late 20s and don't need a super fancy room or anything, but want a clean room, a pleasant experience, preferrably a private bath (as I tend to have a small bladder) and a somewhat convenient location. As long as it's on the main island, and not on Lido or something. Hopefully this isn't too tall of an order.

We are open to staying in apartments and B&Bs as well. Definitely not a hostel though.

Giardini Guesthouse and Hotel Riva are two places that are jumping out at me. Anyone stayed there? Would you recommend either?

Do hotels and such in Venice tend to be more expensive than in Florence and Rome? We can justify spending more in Venice if we know we won't have to pay quite as much on the rest of our trip.

We will also be booking hotels in Cinque Terre, Florence, Rome, and Umbria (near Assissi and Spoleto) if anyone has any recommendations there too.

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

Recently, thanks to a friend of mine who lives in Venice, I discovered this very good hotel, whose location is great for me because very close to railway station.
It is Hotel Villa Rosa and you can visit its webiste and reserve soon: www.villarosahotel.com .
As I could understand your needs, it is a smart solution for you.

Have a lovely trip, ciao.

Vincenzo

Thank you Vincenzo.

I looked that hotel up on venere.com and that website said there was no availability for my dates, but when I went directly to the hotel's website, it looks like they have rooms available. This isn't the first time I've run into this with venere.com. Strange. I sent a request to the hotel for more info. Thanks again. Anyone else have other recommendations?

We had a great experience at the Hotel Galleria. Steps from the Accademia stop, a short walk to the Zattere and lovely owners. We had a room right on the Grand Canal and would return there in a heartbeat.

rickmav,

Thank you. I did see lots of posts and recommendations for the Hotel Galleria. I contacted them, and unfortunately they are booked : ( Thanks again. I guess I'll have to keep looking.

I'm not sure if I understand what you say above but I find nothing strange about it. Contacting the hotel direct should give usually (not always I suppose) more possibility.

I have booked my Venice stay for 10-13 May on venere last week, a single room at B & B San Paolo in Canneregio area for €55. I have nerver stayed, nor heard of, this B & B. It seems to have only a few rooms and there is no ensuite bath but fortunately the reviews on Tripadvisor.com are great (well there are only 3 of them but they are all recent. Maybe a new property.). I just looked for your dates on venere and yes, such bargains are all gone it seems at least on this booking site. You want to contact 2* Mecurio in St.Marco area ? It is 1 minute walk from La Fenice theater. I have stayed there twice. I had thought I would never stayed in the busy San Marco area but it was actually not bad at all. I paid €50/60 in winter and in summer, 2 and 1 year ago respectively. But of course May is a high season so you have to expect to pay double to triple.

I meant to add URL for Mercurio. The owner (I suppose) lady Monica was very nice both times I stayed there.

This place is recommended on Fodors for a budget accommodation and the rate should be around your $150 mark.
I haven't stayed here personally as I ended up choosing an apartment.

Have a wonderful time.

Hotels will often make only a certain number of rooms available to other vendors. So the hotel might have rooms available when the outside vendors have run out of their allocation.

Hi adesign --

I haven't stayed at either hotel you mentioned in your post, but can recommend Pensione Guerrato (http://www.pensioneguerrato.it/) or the Hotel American (more expensive, but great location: http://www.hotelamerican.net/eng/index.php)

They are quite different, but we had great experiences with both. Good luck!

Yes, we found accommodation in Venice is more expensive than other cities. You could also check www.lonelyplanet.com look on Destinations then budget hotels for Venice. Also www.tripadvisor.com and www.frommers.com will have some good ideas to check. I would always check with the hotel direct and take a printout of your confirmation email with you.

For the Cinque Terre, we found this site really useful
http://homepage.sunrise.ch/homepage/avong/cinque_terre/

We stayed in Manarola at Casa Capellini which was basic with private bathroom. The best part, by far, was the balcony with amazing view of Manarola and the sea. Wow! Quite a lot of uphill walking, including steps to reach it though. But all the CT villages are steep, you can walk off all the pasta and gelati! Have fun.

Try Hotel Doni, near St. Marks and Locanda Fiorita in San Stefano square near the Academia Bridge.
