Place for family in central Edinburgh?

Hi,

We thought we had a booking for our late July visit, but the owner just emailed to apologize as her husband had let our our apartment, so now we are back to square 1.

We are a family of 4 seeking a budget guest house/self-catering apartment centrally located in Edinburgh.

We are thinking about Castle View, in New Town, but a google search just revealed it is on the market and if sold may be converted to private residences.

then there is the cheapie, Galloway Guest House, recommended by my Rough Guide (sorry Fodors!), located at 22 Dean Park Crescent, but this looks non-central to me.

Then there is Canon Court, near the Botanical Garden, Is that a good location?

Also Fountain Court Apartment at Grove street.

And finally, there is a private ensuite family room at a hostel, Efinburgh Youth Hostel.

We will have no car. kids are 5 and 7.

none of the hotels seem to allow 4 persons per room (we've tried expedia, and hotels. com).

Any families out there with experience visiting Edinburgh? Any locals with advice as to best location?

Thanks for any suggestions.

The Edinburgh Central Travelodge has family rooms (up to 3 adults and a child).

The normal ROOM rate is £70 per night but if you book in advance you can get them for as little as £26 per night

Thank you. I tried the Travelodge but it appears to be booked for our dates.

Have you looked at Apartment by Castle? Looks lovely on the website and gets great reviews. We had booked the SAS Radisson for our upcoming visit - since it is central and has rooms with two beds - but cancelled and booked this apartment when I found out about it.

Hi philomom

I'm travelling with my husband and son aged 10 in August in Edinburgh and looked at hundred of aparments, edlets, b&B's etc couldnt find anything then I looked at Leith 20 mins from Edinburgh and booked the Sandaig.Good luck. We won't have a car either but I heard the buses are good.

Cheers.
Rosie.

Apartment by Caste are the ones who double booked (mentioned in my first post), so they are not available. Iagree, that looked like a great place.

Maybe we'll consider the Lothians, but we will have already been in London for 3 weeks, and we want to minimize buses.

Thanks.

Hi, IF you are thinking of moving out of central Edinburgh, I suggest Sterling. There are frequent trains from Edinburgh and if I remember it takes about 30mins. Sterling has its own castle and I really liked it. You can get trains and buses to other areas pretty easily too. Just a thought

Hello,
Have you thought about university accommodation? Their halls of residence (some of which consist of blocks of self-catering flats) are available for tourists/visitors to rent over the summer. The accommodation won't be luxurious, but I believe it's good value, and the locations tend to be relatively central. For more info, have a look at http://www.edinburghfirst.com/ - their accommodation brochure lists a number of self-catering flats available for rent between June and September.

philomom : out of your list I'd go for the Edinburgh Central Hostel. It's only been open a few months, is supposed to be nice, all rooms (1-8 beds) are en suite, it's just on the edge of the centre and on an excellent bus route.

Dean Park Crescent is about 1/2 mile outside the centre but it's an uphill walk & not a great bus route.

Canon Court is again not far outside the centre but an uphill walk or an OK bus route.

Fountain Court is just on the edge of the centre but not a very nice street. This would be the flattest walk to the centre, however.

RosieR, Leith hasn't exactly been "20 mins from Edinburgh" for at least several decades now ! Although native Leithers see it as a separate place it's really part of Edinburgh, about 1.5 miles from Princes Street. Your B&B isn't actually in Leith but in Leith Links. But it's on a reasonable bus route, the number 12.

thansk everyone, especially Caroline. These are things one could never figure out from thousands of miles away, even using google maps.

I think we may go with the hoselt, although I note they host rugby teams frequently. Here's hoping we don't have marauding bands of athletes roaming the halls at all hours!

Also, just to note that Edinburghfirst (University) says they only have weekly lets, or 6 week lets. They say they will get back to me with regard to a B&B option.

Thanks again.

Other than the university accommodation (didn't realise they only offered weekly lets for flats, sorry), I'd agree with Caroline that the youth hostel could well be your best bet.

You're welcome, philomom. Rugby shouldn't be a problem in July.

You might try this outfit. Here's a link right to their availability calendar:

RosieR: I passed by the Sandaig on Saturday when checking out the menus outside a new restaurant, Bijou. Although you are about a mile from the main area of pubs & restaurants on the Shore in Leith, Bijou is right on your street ! It got a good write-up in a local paper, recently, by the leader of the Edinburgh Slow Food convivium. It's very casual & doesn't do anything very fancy, but it's supposed to be a really good local bistro & the menu looked nice. And it's open all day, from bacon rolls at breakfast time (although staying in a B&B you won't need those !) to just coffee to dinner.
