Do not miss Da Baffetto in Rome. I had heard many comments that it was the best pizza in Rome, and I must agree. Was so good we went there twice. We went to the original on Via del Governo Vecchio. They opened a second location in Rome near Campo de Fiore, but we did not go to that one.
It is without a doubt the best pizza I have ever had (and I am a pizzaholic).

The BEST pizza in Italy is in Naples and the Campania region. We visited last May and ate pizza every single day.
We like Pizzeria San Callisto in the Trastavere neighborhood in Rome. Very close to St. Maria church

Almesq, can you tell me what about DaBaffetto's pizza makes it so special? Every time I walked by the line was long.

It was very thin crust, very fresh and just tasted great. While the lines are long, we discovered while we were there that they will take reservations. We had our hotel call them during the day for a reservation for that evening, and when we got there, line was LONG, but we went up front, told them we had the reservation, and they seated us right away. (Actually, they went to a storage room, brought out another table, set it up for us and sat us down--talk about service!) We did the same when we went the second time.

almesq, thank you for your response to Catbert's question. We have been wanting to try Da Bufetto to see what the fuss is all about. We will be in Rome again next month and are planning on going...thanks for the tip on reservations!

Tracy: Enjoy! I'm so jealous. Another tip, try the tartufo for dessert. They have 2 a white ("blanco&quot and a black ("negro&quot. We ordered one to share, and it was so good we had to order the other one also. They were unbelievably good.

almesq, what is a tartufo? I've seen it mentioned before but I can't recall what it is, although it sounds great and I'm always up for a dessert!

It's round ball or scoop of ice cream with a chocolate coating. The blanco is with a white coating on the outside, the negro was with a dark chocolate coating. Generally, there is simply a smooth coating of chocolate (simply dipped in chocolate and allowed to harden), but these coatings had crunchy pieces mixed in. The flavor of ice cream inside was also different in each. I can't recall exactly the flavors, but they were both great. Tartufo is a favorite dessert of both my wife and I, so we have it often, and we still talk about these as the best we've ever had.

almesq, sounds wonderful! We've been to Italy several times and always get gelato, of course, but now I've got to try tartufo.... I will definitely try it if we get to Da Bafetto!

In Venice, I think the best (and most expensive) pizza is at Aqua Pazza. I also like Ai Sportivi (Dorsoduro district at the southern end of the Campo Santa Margerita)...great for lunch, very casual, huge selection of pizzas. My personal fave at Ai Sportivi is zucca (pumpkin). YUM.

Hi R,

You really have to go to Naples or Paris for the world's best Pizza.

Pizza Bellini in Naples
Vesuvio in Paris.

I used to recommend NYC and Little Italy in Baltimore, but the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the original owners are now doctors and lawyers and stockbrokers and the quality has greatly declined.

PS,

La Strada, one of two good restaurants in Praiano. I had the pizza with pancetta and cipollini, a dish which is worth traveling to Praiano for.

If you happen to be on the Amalfi Coast, La Brace is a very friendly restaurant with a homey feel and a wood-burning pizza oven. Excellent pizza Margerita.

Hi
Try La Montecarlo on Vicola Savelli. Just be prepared for the yelling and the butcher paper tableclothes. We got there just befor 3 pm in January and he let us in and ordered us to sit at a certain table. He refused to let people who came to the door just after 3. His crust was very thin and delicious as was the entire pizza. It ranks as a spectacular pizza. He opens again at 6:30 pm.. It in an alley off a main street. great pizza,.

If in Vicennes, by any change try the Antika Pizzeria across from the Air Base. Great pizza, in a place that reminded me of the pizzerias in the 1950's in Brooklyn, flour all over and a brick oven.

Hi IA,

>The best pizza is at Sally's in New Haven, CT. <

How about if we meet in Frederiksburg, VA?

I'll bring a pizza from Amici's in Madison, GA and you bring yours.

Could I bring one from Frankie, Johnny and Luigi's in Mountain View, CA? Best in the West (and probably East too). In fact, we're having it tonight!

What the...? I previewed this message, and a r-e-a-l-l-y obnoxious Disney pop-up obscured the entire message rectangle. Grrrrr.

Thanks, Reckoning, for posting this question. I'll be in Italy next month, and I'm already hungry for their pizza. I'll definitely look into Da Baffetto. That's too good of a recommendation to pass up. And the tartufo - never heard of it but ice cream and chocolate - sounds like a hit!
