PIsa, Leaning Tower Reservations
Hello,
Is there a need to purchase advance reservations to climb the Leaning Tower of PIsa if we are going to visit in early July? Does anyone have a website to purchase these tickets?
Museo dell Opera del Duomo ?
With one young teenager who will NOT be interested in too many indoor churches and museums, how much time do you think we should plan for this visit to PIsa?
Thank you!
Mrs. G

Yes, especially in July you should prebook your tickets for the tower in Pisa.

Most visitors find half a day adequate to visit Pisa. Many combine a day trip to Pisa from Florence with Lucca, spending the morning in Lucca and the afternoon in Pisa.

Can someone explain the attraction of climbing this tower?
If it wasn't for the engineers' incompetence, the whole Piazza dei Miracoli complex the tower forms part of would be world-renowned as one of the - possibly THE - great glories of Romanesque architecture. Instead it's been turned into a stupid "must do" for the visually insensitive.
The baptistery and cathedral are beautiful, and well worh serious investigation inside and out. So is the tower, in spite of its odd angle: on a sunny day, the complex reflects light in a way I've never seen anywhere else.
So why waste time climbing to the top of something that means you can't see the tower at all - and get no better a view of Pisa's loveliness than you get from the ground?
As for going to the trouble of booking a climb so utterly pointless: words almost fail me.
Look at the whole Piazza. Judge for yourself what you've got time for and what really looks worth spending that time on. And ignore why neighbours might be puzzled you've not wasted your time. The fact that your child's somehow learned to have no interest in anything worthwhile is no reason to insult her by assuming she'll be any more interested in something so tawdry.

Oh, flanneruk, you're no fun. Some people just like to climb things like bell towers, Duomos, city walls, etc. To paraphrase RFK: "Some see a tower and say why climb; others see a tower and say why NOT climb."

flanneruk, there is something about towers that kids love to climb. When I went to Europe as a young teenager, my sister and brothers and I climbed every tower and to the top of every church and monument that we could. We also enjoyed visiting many museums, churches and places of historical significance.
Even as an adult, I find the tower of Pisa fun to climb and enjoy the view from the top. I also love visiting the cathedral and baptistry.
And, yes, I would definitely recommend reservations to climb the tower.

I don't think you will need more than several hours. All the items of interest in the Campo dei Miracoli are quite near each other (the tower, the duomo, the baptistery, the museo, the campo santo). It just depends if you want to visit them all and how much time you want to spend at each one. Pisa is the least favorite place I have visited in Italy, but I did want to see it once. Even in March it was crowded, so I would advise a reservation.
