Piran - required time

Hi,
I am almost at finalizing stage of my itinerary, but a bit stuck on this day trip to Piran.
I have 2 options :

a) I can do Piran trip on my last day in SLO ...but I will be in Bled the previous night . So first I have to travel to LJU , check in my hotel - and then get into a bus for Piran . Return the same day - last bus @18:40 OR if anybody knows of any other bus /services later than this time, please suggest .

b) I add a day to SLO (by excluding Berchtesgaden,as I will be in Salzburg prior to LJU) - Then I add Piran in between while I am in LJU.

I would like to know , how many hours is advisable for Piran ..I enjoy photography and hope to spend some time exploring and photographing the town. I suppose option a will give me approx 6 hrs and option b atleast 8 hours. Please advise if I need to factor in anything else ..

Many thanks.

Six hours in Piran should be perfectly fine if you don't venture out of town. You will miss the sunset, which will be at around 19:45-20:00 in late August, but you'll still get plenty of photo ops, it's a picturesque little town.

If you want more time on the coast in order to visit nearby places like the salt pans in Secovlje, a popular spot for nature and bird photography, you could consider spending the previous night in Ljubljana instead of Bled. It's 90 minutes by bus, so you could easily go to Ljubljana in the evening, check in your hotel and then travel to Piran first thing in the morning.

Don't miss Berchtesgaden, it's a paradise for photographers. Then again so are Bled, Ljubljana and Piran.

Check whether you can deposit your luggage at Koper train station. First train arrival from Lesce Bled: 8.45; last train departure for Ljubljana: 19.15

I loved Piran - beautiful little town! In 2011 I spent two nights there, which was more than I needed, but I was headed to Italy and I arrived late the first day, so one night wouldn't have been quite enough. It's a small town, very little to do, but I did enjoy taking pictures at my leisure and even swimming in the ocean. Six hours is probably plenty of time, but yes, a shame to miss the sunset.

I hear Berchtesgaden is really beautiful. I wouldn't know, even though I visited in the daytime (same 2011 trip) because it POURED rain the day I was visiting from Salzburg. I spent a few hours at the Nazi Documentation Center there - which had a lot of interesting photos but all the text was in German; the English audio guide simply read all of the long text to me and I gave up on it fairly soon and just looked at the pictures.

It's a shame you can't play it by ear and change your plans based on the weather. If you had a rainy day like I did while in Salzburg, I'd bag the extra day there and just take the extra day in Slovenia, but in the summer, being that flexible may not be easy.

I spent two days (and nights) there but I guess 6-8 hours would be enough to wander around the whole place, it's quite small. But I question if the timing of public transportation would realistically give you that much if you need to get from Bled to Ljubljana, check in to a hotel, get the bus to Piran and then back again that same day to Ljubljana.

I think the suggestion to spend the previous night in Ljubljana instead of Bled would work. Or take the extra day and spend a night in Piran.

Here's my trip report (and photo link) http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...e-slovenia.cfm

Hello All,
Thanks everyone for your inputs/suggestions .
Sounds like both BerchTesG & Piran are contenders in their own rights .. which I quite expected ..
and now I so wish I could spare a stayover at Piran ..

neckervd - Thanks for the return train timing option, will check on this (hope this doesn't require a change)

rtt0921 - You just answered what I was secretly hoping to hear.. the challenge now is to fit both into my iti !

whathello/Andrew - Good to hear lovely things about this pretty little town - I am so looking forward to be there !

isabel - read your trip rpt, lovely images.
A friend of mine just returned from LJU and shares the same opinion abt LJU castle. May be I can leverage this time into something else.

Thanks agn to all of you !
