Pilsen, Pilzen. Plzen or Pilzn--we'd like to make a day trip from Prague

Hello,

During our Prague stay DH & I would like to visit Pilzen for the Patton Museum and possibly the Urquell brewery. I have looked on the forums here and on Trip Advisor but have found little info that is less than 5 years old. We are wondering whether it's currently best to travel by train or bus. Some of these older posts indicated the bus was more direct and trains not as clean or comfortable. Has train travel improved in the Czech Republic? Would we have to change trains or busses on the route or can we find a direct trip? We appreciate Fodorites' great advice. Oh, and we'll be there in October. Thanks!

We didn't go to Pilsen on our trip, but friends of ours went a few months ago - they took the train and said it was really easy and the visit to the brewery was fun.

there is quite a bit of upto date info on Plzen TA ,much of it by my self. here is some info about getting to the brewery.
The Plzen Brewery is easy to reach from Prague.
Take a train from Hlavni or Smichov stations (same train) you will get the times through www.idos.cz,journey time is about 90 minutes. direct trains run every hour or so.You will need less that 10 minutes to walk from the train station to the Brewery. You can get a bus to Plzen which is a bit quicker but drops you off on the other side of the town .I always reccommend the train as it is more comfertable, goes through lovely countryside ,is nearer to the brewery and has toilets ,a requirement if you have had a few beers whilst in Plzen.
As you come into Plzen by train you will see the vast brewery complex on your right (it is HUGE).once in the station go out the main exit past the car/taxi park and onto the main road, turn right here and walk towards the underpass, you can go through here and take the far right exit and keep going, this will take you to the brewery. It is however much easier if you take the path to the right just before the underpass ,follow it up over a rise and you will come to a hotel called angello (big white building) take the walkway to the left and follow it round to a footbridge over the main road, this footbridge takes you right to the entrance of the brewery. The visitor center is about 50 or so yards into the Brewery on the left.

this link will give you details of the tours,if you want to make a real day of it i suggest you do the Brewing Museum as well.It is about a 10 minute walk from the brewery.there is a link to the museum on the website I have given you.
I think the first English speaking tour of the brewery is at 12.45,so you could do the museum first or have an early lunch at the brewery resturant Na Spilce which is very good (and bloody huge) service is very quick in there ,the food good and the beer SUPERB.
The Brewery shop is also excellent ,I always spend a small fortune whenever I am there. It is near the entrance to the resturant.(or was last time I was there)

this is a list of bars in Plzen and i can highly recommend Stara Sladovna
an old but fancitaningly interesting place for a beer.
I don't know about the Patton museum but there has been recent threads on TA about it,I will try and dig it out for you,the search function on TA is not that great and is very word and spelling specific.
I also have several trip reports on Ta and one on here metioning Plzen trip i have put the links up.

The buses to Plzen are very modern and the trains clean though the age of the rolling stock does vary ,some trains I have been on have been quite old othere very new, just the luck of the draw
