Pilatus Golden RoundTrip
Well I took the plunge (again)!
Booked airfare to Zurich for early October...less than $870.
I have never been up to Pilatus despite several stays in Switzerland.
We will be travelling with the Tellpass, staying in a Bunnen FeWo. This may
seem a silly question, but is there an actual, physical ticket that must be
purchased for the Golden Roundtrip, or do we just follow the segments
on our own (ie: ship to Alpnachstad, bus #1 back to Luzern at the end, etc) ?
We will be using a "free" or fully covered day on the Tellpass, so we would
just flash this anyway.

No special ticket required. The name "Golden Round Trip" is just marketing. Not sure, though, if you need to walk up to the counter at the funicular e.g. and show your Tell Pass there to get a free ticket - possibly yes.

Mokka4 I spent an afternoon at the Tierpark Goldau some years ago. If you like wandering round with a following of deer and other small very friendly mammals and are prepared to buy the special food for the them you will enjoy it. There/was a small cafe there, notheing special but somewhere to get a drink from. If you have the time then yes go and anjoy.

Tierpark Goldau is a funy zoo with mostly animals which live or used to live in Switzerland. The newesta attractions are
- bear/wulf park: bears and wulfs live in the same area.
- otter: The newest inhabitants of the park are the otters
In the old part of the park dears and mufflons walk around among the visitors (or vice versa if you prefer). They can be feeded.
There are also playgronds for kids and picknick areas with campfire sites.
This is the zoo I like most.

Good to hear pore! There will be no children with us, but I AM an animal-lover.
In which area of Switzerland do you live?
We also intend to visit the Luzern Herbstmesse, and once up on Rigi, it will coincide with an Alpmarkt day (how lucky are we?)

Brunnen, what a unusual place to stay for somebody from abroad! .. I like that!
Two spontaneous proposals besides the standard paths:
1. For a very lazy day and very sunny day: Take the small cable car right at the back of Brunnen up to Urmiberg (http://www.urmiberg.ch/seilbahn/seilbahn.html). If you go up at 11:30 than you can just sit down at the restaurant on the terrace to have lunch, just 2 m next to the mountain station. And you will have an extremely incredible view over the lake into the direction of Altdorf and of the Gotthard, canton Uri.
Of course, you could also do a small 3h hike from there to Hinterbergen and then down to Vitznau with cable car again: http://www.gersauer.ch/downloads/13_...li_vitznau.pdf
Track 11 on this overview map: http://www.gersauer.ch/images/gersau_wanderkarte.jpg
2. A lovely and extremely exciting hike of about 5 h in total (4h hiking) with two very special cable cars, with the best action at the end: THE "Wildheuipfad", the Wild Haymaking Trail.
You go to Flüelen, e.g. by boat or faster by train, sitting just at the beginning of the Vierwaldstättersee (lake Lucerne), just opposite of Brunnen, then take one of two cable cars, namely the Eggberge cable car. It is just a cable car with space for about 10 persons, not more, but you will rise non-stop 1007m higher up to the Eggberge!!! It runs only every half an hour and not over lunch time: on 12:30, there is no service (check time table here: http://www.eggberge.ch/fahrplan.html)
Then you hike about 3 h more or less on the same elevation along lovely pastures and through wood and finally quite steep meadows at the second third of the hike, but always keeping the same elevation more or less, with extraordinary views down to the Urnersee, the first part of the lake Lucerne!
On the way, you can learn about the background of wild haymaking (see the second link with a map and trail infos at the site's bottom of the link below).
Then you will meet a real "Alpöhi" (the grandfather of Heidi ;-), at least he looks like that) where you can get something small to drink and eat, but only a very few things (point 12)! And he is really still living and working up there.
Then you go down more or less one hour (600m), but on a lovely path until you reach a small plateau called Ober Axen, just 530m above the Urnersee.
And now, you will experience the highlight of this hike: You go down with a very small cable car useable for 4 persons only, first of all over a very lovely pasture just 2-3 meters above ground, but then suddenly the cable car goes over the cliff and you fly literally 500m above the lake, at least this is the impression you will have - to be over the lake, but the 500m are correct. - So, do not tell your wife before! ;-)) But of course, if you are anxious about heights, you can't do that, but roller coaster is nothing compared to this experience, and it is real!
In order to take this cable car from Ober Axen down to Flüelen again, you have to call the farmer family living just next to the station, they will start and run the cable car for you.
At the bottom station, you either take the bus back to the train and boat station in Flüelen itself, or you just walk that bit as well.
This is definitely my favourite, easy going (but you need hiking shoes and clothes, nevertheless) Sunday hike. And it is just mind-blowing, not only the first time you do it!
Before you do it, ask them, if the trail is open, normally between mid June to mid October (see phone numbers on the site).

Just let me know, how it was, when you have done it ;-))

Wow martin! Thanks for the very detailed information!
I chose Brunnen, because it is definitely 'off the beaten track' yet still has decent public transportation connections, I love the combo of mountains and water, and I have previously rented FeWos on Lungern, Kandersteg, Pontresina, Brienz and Rapperswil, exploring each of THOSE regions on daytrips (to give you an idea of my tastes) and LOVED them!
In May, a friend and I rented in Bamberg, Germany (for a taste of cities and 'culture'), but now I am craving outdoors and nature on this trip!
We are two 40-ish gals going (colleagues from work).
We will be more limited to "easy" hikes or Spaziergaenge (think Seebodenalp to Ruodisegg), but I can "do" high cablecars and gondolas without fear (just no edge of the mountain, stainght down the cliffs hikes!)
We definitely plan to go up the Urmiberg Cable car, since it is just in town anyway! I read about Ober Axen and the need to call the farmer for it to run ; -). We 'may' tke it UP from Fluelen and just take in the vistas for a bit....
Otherwise, as noted above, we will vist Pilatus (first for me) and revisit Rigi(Alpmarkt the weekend we go!), combine Kuessnacht with Seebodenalp walk, spend time at the Luzerner Maas, do a half-day with a Tell-inspired sight, the other half day at Goldau Tierpark, and the remaining day(s) to be determined.
