Piedmont - Wine tour on my own or hire someone?

Visiting The Langhe for the truffle festival for 5 days in October with my husband. We really want to learn about all the wines in the region, plan to visit as many wineries as we can and will be renting a car. I am wondering if it's necessary to join a wine tour or hire someone to teach us about the wines or if we will get a similar experience without a tour. 200 euro each feels a little steep to visit 3 wineries (based on the companies I have contacted). Aside from being able to drink more do you think its necessary if we plan ahead of time and book places ourselves? If you believe we should hire someone, is there anyone you recommend?
