Picasso Museum in Malaga OR more time in Granada?
Greetings!
I know ..this is a question of comparing oranges and apples Malaga Picasso museum vs more time in Granada (e.g. to visit Monasterio de San Jerónimo or Monasterio de la Cartuja or even the Sacramonte cave museum).
I'm seeing mixed reviews of the Picasso museum in Malaga. Some reviewers say that the collection does not have any famous or major works. Does it? Of course, Malaga being his birthplace, not visiting his museum probably sounds strange. If we had a whole day in Malaga, it would be a definite yes. But when you are pressed on time, is it an unmissable visit?
We flying into Malaga but will not have much time in the city. 2 nights at Molina Lario Hotel, and our only day in Malaga will be actually spent in Ronda. Next day we leave for Granada.
If we skip the museum, we could probably be in Granada by 12.00h. And have 12.00h-17.00/17.30h time for touring the sites (of course pausing for lunch).
With a Picasso museum visit (probably will need about 1 hour?), we won't get to Granada till after 13.00h.
It's only an hour or so difference, but again when pressed on time, every hour counts
So would you do an hour at the Picasso museum OR add a visit to the La Cartuja / Monasterio de San Jerónimo / Sacramonte dwelling museum.
Thank you!

You of course already know my answer, add any extra time possible to Málaga. But perhaps only see the Picasso birth house and then go for the close by (300 meters away) Carmen Thyssen museum with an excellent and Andalucía/Málaga oriented collection?
The Picasso "Casa natal": http://fundacionpicasso.malaga.eu/po...ra.fpicasso=in
The Carmen Thyssen museum: http://www.carmenthyssenmalaga.org/en/
Those two together should give you a very powerful Málaga experience!

Nothing is unmissable IMO, it depends on interests. Are you particularly a fan of Picasso? If not, I don't see why it would be so important to go there, just because he was born there. I would never delay a trip elsewhere just to go to any Picasso museum, to be honest, and I've been to maybe 3-4 of them (Paris, Antibes, Barcelona, you name it, not to mention special exhibits of his works in others).
No, I suppose this museum doesn't have one of his most famous works, but that isn't that unusual. It has hundreds and some are similar to many others as he would do a lot that were fairly similar IMO. If you just want to go to see one of his most famous paintings, don't bother, a trip to MOMA in NY will be more satisfying as they have several.
If you really like Picasso, it's a good enough museum, but as I said, I wouldn't stay in a city an extra half day for that, but I go to NYC a couple times a year, anyway.
I haven't been to those places you name in Granada so can't comment on those.

Kimhe, “you of course arelady know my answer, add any etxtra time possible to Malaga.” Out of curiosity, what is your favorite city in Andalusia?
Thank you for suggesting Carmen Thyssen Musuem. For a second, I thought “it’s a winner”, until I realized that they are closed on Mondays. But the paintings I saw online were very beautiful and would have been very interesting. There were some lovely scenes from Seville and Malaga. You are right; this museum is a great choice.
Christina, “why it would be so important to go there, just because he was born there”. Good point. I think the words that appear often in reviews (at least Japanese tourists) “first thing that comes to mind when you hear Malaga—Picasso”. But yes, I am not a great fan either. I don’t really understand his later works. I was surprised though to see his early works, which were very traditional and beautiful (half of our group visited Picasso Museum in Barcelona 2 years ago).
Annhig, market yes! It’s funny—I’m on the fence about the Picasso Museum, but the market was always the plan. We’ll walk from the hotel to the market in the morning. Maybe browse for half an hour or so. Too bad we cannot really start buying gourmet gifts just yet. We’ll keep that until our last day in Madrid. But I assume, at the market in Malaga, I can pick up some berries / fruits / snacks for the bus ride to Granada.
In Granada: 1.5 days (about) depending on the time of arrival.
Day 1 / Hope to tour city center with the Cathedral, Royal Chapel, Albycine area, and if we get there early enough one of the Monasteries (Monasterio de San Jerónimo or Monasterio de la Cartuja......this one is mentioned to be the "Christian Alhambra" so that sounds kind of intriguing ) OR the Gypsy caves (without seeing flamenco there). + lunch + check in at the hotel + dinner with the view of Alhambra
Day 2 / 9.30-13.30 Alhambra + lunch at the Parador + 2 hours at the Spa al Andalus + casual dinner (tapas, etc) + optional for the super active a 22.00h visit at the Alhambra (most likely I'll be on my own by that time!)
Two museum visits that I plan for the whole trip are : Prado (2nd visit) and Sorolla Museum (1st time) in Madrid. Interesting that Carmen Thyssen Malaga has a Sorolla exhibit in Sept-Oct…. I hope his best works are still in Madrid! And I guess if someone wants to see Picasso’s Guernica painting, our hotel is about 1km from the museum.

Kia, try not to ask. When we went on our first trip together, I asked for the ladies' input. Then I had to pick sides as everyone had a different idea. Since then I'm the sole planner So far they have had no complaints . I think perhaps the only thing that they occasionally mention is "to have a bit more time for shopping".
With out cities along our route , I don't have as much trouble picking attractions. It's this Malaga Picasso museum vs Granada that's been tough.
Egbert, I agree about Barcelona Picasso museum. 2 years ago we had a short visit and enjoyed that. Also, we did have a real guide there (not museum audioguides). That might have made a big difference. In Malaga we won't have a guide.
