Photos of Venice

I looked at the photos of Venice on pbase, directed there by Isabel's advice to Ziggy123. I noticed that a couple or three were mislabelled and added a comment to that effect. But the photos seemed to be labelled as being by 'annforcier', so I was just wondering if ann and Isabel were one and the same?

Very nice photos Tom! They're a whole lot better than mine. You must be using a dslr.

Can you name your photos on pbase? I looked at someone else's photos on pbase and there were no names on them either.

I am curious about the snow-covered mountains in Venice!

adrienne - The snow covered mountains were about an hour away from Venice. I had just awoke from maybe an hours sleep at best, and that was my view out the plane window.

I know I should put names as to where they are. Truth be told, other than the obvious ones, I have no clue. You see, I get lost very easily.

The 2005 gallery was taken with a point and shoot. The next year I upgraded to a DSLR. For me it is easier to frame my shots and I can contorl the exposure better. Glad you liked them.

Dawn - Thank you as always. Someday we will finally have that GTG in Italy.

Challiman - It just takes practice. Also, try to experiment with your new camera. Learn how to use it in other than the Auto mode. The other settings will let you have more control over expousure, color saturation. And most of all, learn about White Balance settings. And have a great trip.

Tom...sigh... of course I was looking at Florence.. dreaming... I was to arrive on Oct 5..not that I am bemoaning or anything. I trust all things work as they should...

someday

Seriously - have you ever tried to sell your photos to stock photography? You are really good.

The ones in Venice with the laundry hanging between the buildings..it completely captures the essence of Italy...

Tom (TRSW)
Thanks for your response. I was hoping to get a response from Isabel/Ann. But I have looked at your photos, and they almost straightaway answered one of the questions I was going to ask her. She took a photo and said it was Santa Maria dei Miracoli, but I knew it wasn't, though I didn't know which church it was. In your photos of 2006, you have the same church, which I recognised as San Geremia (because there are more clues). Your 2006 photos show a great development (pun originally unintended, but now left intentionally) from your 2005 photos. Not just because you had a better camera, but, obviously, the first time you go you take photos of all the 'must-sees', like everybody else, so your photos are a bit like everybody else's. But the second trip, you were taking photos of 'quirky' things, more interesting and less obvious.

Bert - Thank you for the compliment (and pun). Glad my picture helped clear up your question about the church.

I have been an avid photographer for 30+ years. Right before I went to Italy the first time is when I finally caved and went digital. And I was just so in awe that I just snapped away at everything.

When I went back the next year I knew I wanted to update to a DSLR. Like I said, you can control the composistion much better shooting in a 35mm format. That and I had more time to think about what I was shooting.

Now I can't wait til this April when I will embark on a 3 month trip to Italy. I can't even imagine how many pictures I will take then.

Dawn - Please let me know what your DS finds out. Maybe I will start my trip in Amsterdam for 2 reasons. The first is I can fly non-stop from Seattle. Second of course for the brownies.

Bert - just saw this post. What questions did you want to ask? I'm sure I have a few photos (and not just in my Venice gallery) that may be mislabeled. It's frustrating to me that so many excellent photos on the web have no labels and you can't figure out where they are. So I try to label as much as possible, but especially with someplace like Venice, it's hard to remember exactly where you were for each shot.

isabel,

You know I have been a fan of your work for some time now, just great IMHO!! But I know what you mean about about labeling. Unless I took a notebook with me, I usualy have no idea where I am. And to stop to take notes just takes away from the moment.

Dear Isabel,
I have a hobby, some might call it a problem, others might call it a disease, but I prefer to call it a hobby. It all started after my first trip to Venice, back in 1984. I started to collect guide books to Venice, then books about Venice. These often showed beautiful photographs, and I would say to myself, 'I'd like to take a photograph just like that.' Often the guide book was helpful and said exactly where the photo was taken (or what it was a photo of). But often a caption would read 'A typical rio' or 'Burano'. So it became my hobby to try to find these places. I am afraid that this has developed to something bordering on OCD, so that now it no longer matters whether or not the photo is beautiful. If the photo is 'interesting' (to me, by my definition), then I want to try to find it. Also I try to find locations used in films set in Venice. On my last visit I was successful in finding some used in 'Don't Look Now', 'Brideshead Revisited' and 'Italian for Beginners'. I take prints of screenshots (from DVDs) or of photos of the TV screen (from videos), or I scan the photos in the books and print copies to take with me as I walk around Venice. And so I was able to see that your photo captioned 'Santa Maria dei Miracoli' was not that church, and when I saw the similar photo in Tom's set, I was able to identify it as San Geremia. I agree that it would be good if people putting photos on the web (or the 'net) would caption them. On my next visit, I will be trying to find that building with the tall cylindrical tower (282 04 176 136.jpg). I have a friend in Venice who tells me it is in the parochia of San Fantin. I don't like to be told exactly where something is – it takes the fun out of it. Sometimes books get captions wrong, and I have found that one photo I was trying to locate had been mirror-reversed. I was especially pleased with myself when I recognised it.

Have you had a look at my comments on your photos? I am afraid I may have been a bit harsh about 'Gli Scalzi' – I have just seen it referred to as 'Chiesa degli Scalzi' in another book.

I would put some of my photos 'out there', but it does take some time and effort, and I'm afraid I'm rather lazy. I did put some on Tripadvisor (Amalfi Coast), but I sent them all in landscape format (as downloaded from my camera), and they told me that they could not rotate them to portrait (where appropriate) so I had to do it at this end and re-send them.

How well do you know Tom? It seems from your messages that you are not acquainted, so I wondered how he knew that you and annforcier were one and the same.

Sorry to take up so much space on Fodor – you could email me directly at [email protected] with any comments, if you'd like.

Hi Bert, I understand your desire to have photos identified, I feel the same way, just to a less compulsive degree. I take photos primarily for myself, not for others, but am very happy that lots of people seem to enjoy looking at them. I know I spend hours and hours looking at photos on the web - sometimes of places I've been, and always when I am researching a trip I look at lots and lots of photos. It's one of the ways I decide which specific locations I want to visit. I don't go just to photograph a specific church or whatever, but rather to get a sense of a place so I'll know if I want to be there. As I said, it is frustrating when I see someplace and then can't find out where it is. So I do try to caption photos whenever possible. But as Tom said, it kind of takes away from the experience if you have to stop and make notes of exactly where you are all the time. In some cities, I can look at a map and pretty much retrace my route for the day, and then it's easy to identify shots. But in Venice when I just wander around I can't do that.

As for people knowing that Isabel (my fodor's screen name) and Ann (my real name) are the same person - lots of us who post here regularly know each others "real" names even if we haven't met. There are a few people with whom I've had phone or email relationships, and just a few whom I've met in person, but most are just my "fodors friends".

Very nice shots, TRSW. I like both 2005 and 2006 sets but the 2006 photos have richer, crisper colors. Did you use a different camera or just used different settings?

Thank you for posting them.

ComfyShoes,

Great screen name. And thank you for your comment about the photos.

To answer your question. You are right on both parts. In 2005 I shot with a basic point and shoot digital camera set on auto. For 2006, I upgraded to a DSLR and shot everything using manual settings.

This lets you control the exposure, color saturation and most importantly to me, the White Balance. What this does is you tell the camera what your actual lighting conditions, ie sunny, cloudy, shady, incandecent etc. I hope that makes sense.

Plus you just need to experiment with the different settings until you get a good feel for the results.

Then it just becomes second nature.

Tom

TRSW, Thank you although I chose the screen name on a day when I was rather uninspired I use a DSLR too but I am new at it (see http://tinyurl.com/6qtxhk) and need to continue to get a feel for it.
