Phone use in Italy

We are visiting Italy in October. We have Canadian cell phones. We wonder what we should do to be able to call within Italy when there. Not concerned about calls to and from Canada. Any suggestions about buying local phone, local SIM card, or...?

If you have an unlocked cell phone, can buy a sim card and just put it in phone.

For calls in Europe, your cell needs to be a quad band phone. If it is and if it's unlocked, do as leuk2 says. If it's a quad band but locked, you may be able to get it unlocked. Or just buy a cheap phone at your first stop. Often they come with a SIM card with a few free minutes.

Or you can use this excuse to buy a new, quad band phone. And port your old number to it.

Thanks for the advice. Think I will buy a cheap one there since our phones are locked. Regards to all
