Phone from US land line to my US cell phone while in Italy

Hello,

If I have my US cell phone (with international roaming & my US SiM card) with me in Italy and a family member in the US needs to call me from a US land line, do they just dial my number as if I were in the US? I think that they do, but I want to make sure.

I do not need info on the best cell phone plan, buying an unlocked cell phone & purchasing an Italian SIM card, or how expensive a call will be, I just want to clarify the procedure for dialing my number should there be an emergency at home.

Thanks

Yes they dial your US number and voila your phone rings in Italy and you will be talking to them as if they are next door....they will hear an Italian ring tone which will be a bit different than the regular US ring tone and I have had people calling me confuse European ring tones with a busy signal but otherwise it's seamless.

May I offer a word of unsolicited advice? I usually leave my phone off when I'm overseas, then I look for messages several times a day and return calls as needed. The reason is that any call coming through will result in a charge to you, even if you let it go to voice mail.

I hit submit too soon. If the phone is off you will not be charged for calls coming in.

Just to follow up on PM....as a matter of fact if a call comes in and you donb't answer it while the phone is registered on a foreign gsm network, you get charged for 2 calls..it is a fact of lie with the gsm carriers....in effect when the call relays back to voicemail, you get charged for the reception of the call in Italy say and then the rebound back to your voice mail triggers a sec ond charge and if the caller leaves a long messge, you get charged by the minute! Can be a reall bummer....
