Hello Everyone!

So my family and I are planning a trip to go to England this summer. We would be flying out of Philadelphia. Our original plan was to fly straight from Philadelphia to London Heathrow. But we had a friend tell us that if you fly from philadelphia to Iceland to London, it would be cheaper. We would have to stay a night in Iceland as well, but the price came out to be $2,000 cheaper. Do you think it is worth traveling/ staying overnight more than just a direct flight? Thanks in advance!

Is this on IcelandAir? We flew London to Seattle and had a layover in Rekjavik. We actually didn't need to spend the night though, just a 6 hour layover or so.

We used it as a mini holiday within a holiday. We took the bus from the airport out to Blue Lagoon, the natural hot springs. We loved it and would have liked more time.

I guess the question is can you spend less than $2000 on a day and a night in Rekjavik? Or, if you come out even, but get another adventure tacked on to your trip, would that be worth it?

I would do it, but that's just me!

Why not spend a few nights in Reykyavik and take an excursion to the real beauty of Iceland - to hot pools and geysers - Reykyavik itself is a modern town with to me at least little of interest - having stayed there three times on Icelandair flights but long ago.

Why do you think you have to overnight in Iceland? It's been a long time ago,but we just passed through Reyjavik en route to Luxembourg.
Have you looked at other airlines for comparison--just because your friend said so, may not make it correct.
Iceland is a fascinating country.

I use skyscanner.net to look at flight options - of which there tend to be an awful lot, especially if you use carriers' options to go via their home hub airport.

Most Icelandair flights are timed to synchronise at Keflavik with flights to the other side of the Atlantic, with only a 2 hr or so layover. Once I arrived at Keflavik early in the morning, took the Flybus into Reykjavik to explore the city and have a swim at the Blue Lagoon, then took the afternoon flight on to London. I've noticed on the Icelandair website some very tempting offers for longer layovers.

I would say go for it! Iceland is like nowhere else on earth.

It might depend on how long your entire trip is. We used the stopover opportunity in Iceland to take a three day hike and then spend a couple of days in Reykjavik. Definitely worth it if you can spare some time from the England portion of your trip.
