Pension/Hotel advance booking?

Do you really need to book in advance or can you wait until you get there? Do they have booking kiosks like in the UK where you can book for that day?

Perhaps specifying a country, city and month would help us give you an answer.

For example, high season, yes, it's recommended. But low season you can get by without advance reservations. Again when and where are you traveling?

It does depend on where you are going, and when. So where are you going and when?

Sorry - Will travel in either May/June or Sept/Oct (Which would you recommend) Budapest, Prague, Vienna, Krakow and Warsaw.
It was so easy in the UK, went to the booking agent and they advised which B&Bs had vacancies, location and cost.
This seems to be a pretty popular itineary, not sure how to address these countries all in the same post.
