Paris: What to do with luggage for a couple of hours?
Our party of six will be arriving at Gare de Lyon as 12:15 p.m. on a Thursday. We have reservations at the Hotel Muguet, but will not be able to check in until 2:30. They will let us leave the bags at the hotel, but given security issues (for example, I don't think I'd leave my laptop with the hotel), I was wondering it if would be better to use left luggage at Gare de Lyon, grab some lunch, and maybe see something in that part of town before heading over to our hotel in the 7th?
Any opinions?

I'd just leave it with the hotel, as I have done numerous other occasions. Then again, if I were concerned about the safety of my belongings when left with hotel staff, I'd choose a different hotel.

So, you would rather turn your laptop and bags over to the hands of strangers at the busy, manually operated consigne at the Gare de Lyon than have the Hôtel Muguet take them, secure them, and make sure they are safe for two hours? The hotel that you already have contracted with for a room and that has certain obligations to you? Really?

People leave bags at their hotel (before checking in and after checking out) ALL the time. That would be much more secure IMO than someplace else.
They certainly don't want an issue w/ a guest before they've even checked in. It will be fine.

OK, there is some information included in the snark. So, I take it the left luggage at Gare de Lyon is manned by people, rather than self service lockers. Certainly a negative if that is correct. As to having a contract with my hotel, I've read too many reviews of what I would consider to be good hotels on Trip Advisor where people have had things turn up missing when they leave bags with the hotel to think that this is something that only happens at bad hotels. I might leave clothing and the like with a hotel, but I'm hesitant to leave more valuable stuff.
janis: Thanks.

We have left a laptop, as well as other luggage, with hotels many times. It is safe. You can put the laptop inside a suitcase or another bag if you don't want it to attract attention and lock the bag.

We have left our luggage and laptop twice at hotels in the past couple of years, once in Nice, once in Paris. In both cases the bags were placed in a locked room.
If you are concerned about having things stolen at the Muguet maybe you should stay somewhere else?

I have never ever seen a manually staffed left luggage in any French station - they all have security clearance machines you put your bags thru and retrieve them yourselves and you put them in a locker.
Wonder if all Paris stations are changing to the manual staffer handled and staffed deal at Gare de Lyon - hope not because I'd rather also handle my own stuff and in manual checks you pay typically by the bag which could be real pricey rather than by the locker which all stations previously TMK had two or thre different sizes with varying prices.
Sad to hear lockers no longer at Gare de Lyon!

I can assure you there are lockers at Gare de Lyon.
Gares en mouvement lists both "consignes automatiques" and 'consignes manuelles" - at exactly the same location - probably because the Xray machines are manned. You go with your luggage through the machines, put it in the lockers and go out. You have to go through the machines again when you want to pick up your luggage.

I'd leave my bags but bring the laptop and any valuables with you in a backpack while you grab some lunch. By the time you pick up your luggage, get through customs and transfer to the hotel you room may even already be ready.
