Paris, Sarlat and where?

So I'm narrowing in on our itinerary for a trip to Paris and the Dordogne next May/June. Four nights in Paris, ten in the Dordogne. It occured to us that we might be better off having Paris on the back-end of the trip if we're leaving for home from Paris. So we'll arrive in Paris and then take a train to... somewhere, where we can pick up a car for 10 days. Then we can do the reverse and spend our last 4 days in Paris.

Sarlat seems to be a very nice choice for base, lots of excellent close by day trips. Maybe we should stay there 5 nights? What would be a good choice for another base? We could stay in 3 places in the Dordogne (or surrounding areas), 4 nights in Sarlat, maybe and 3 nights in two other places. Or we can stay 5 nights in Sarlat and 5 nights in another place. (That's long for us, we never like to stay anywhere for just 1 night, and prefer a minimum of 3, but 2-4 nights is fine).

Suggestions? I'm really overwhelmed by the number of choices.
