The Paris Kitchen food tour visited prominent bakeries, cheese shops, etc., and an outdoor market, on the Left Bank. We learned so much and didn't feel intimidated walking into shops afterwards.

The website is also great for restaurant suggestions.

Looks interesting but is pricey! Do you or anyone know of other food tours that are less expensive?

Paris Walks occasionally offer food tours http://www.paris-walks.com/chocolate-walk.html They're the least expensive that I'm aware of at 27 euros but the groups are larger. They told me they take up to 20 people.

The best resource for restaurants in Paris is independent footwork.

You could also just get a copy of "Clotilde's Edible Adventures in Paris" and tour on your own. That's a really pricey tour, especially for "tastings".
