Paris restaurant slates : today's special!

Today I walked from the center of Paris towards the north and took a certain number of photos of restaurant slates. These restaurant slates scare a lot of people, intrigue others, often have strange handwriting... but they are one of the most important things to look at when you are walking around town. At least that's how Parisians feel about them, when they are unsure of what they might want to eat and are looking for a delicious bargain. Anyway, this should help to inform people who are always asking themselves that important question: "How much does it cost to eat in Paris?"

So, here is the photo gallery: http://tinyurl.com/d9jq3d

I took quite a few photos of normal menus as well, and also snack shop price lists and will be starting a thread on both of those things soon, if anybody is interested.

Cool! I, for one, am most interested. Makes me hungry just reading the selections.

kerouac, I think you will find that just like your montage of neighborhood fashion, the menus from around Paris will be of great interest. Paris fashion and food, what's not to love

thanks, I'm looking forward to your upcoming menu threads, Deborah

Your photos are the perfect way for people to see for themselves what the costs will be. There is something for every budget. And the crepe stands are everywhere if you're in a hurry.

This is fabulous--I saw several things that I'd love to order right now!

Just to clarify--would these be lunch or dinner menus prices (or both?).

I don't think that unforettable dinners have much to do with a specific restaurant. I would even say that planning too carefully is the best way to set yourself up for a possible disappointment. If you improvise, and it goes wrong, you just laugh about it. If you have planned ahead and it is not perfect, you can be very annoyed and/or disappointed.

Great slates kerouac! Thanks for sharing your photos. It's small things like these menu slates that give such a feel for Paris.

Very cool.

Someone, please tell me what "red fruit tart" really means!!! I saw it on more than one board on my travels there and I see it in Kerouac's gallery too.

it's simply a tart that is made with red fruits like strawberries, plums, cherries and other fruits whose French names I don't know and the tarts vary restaurant to restaurant.

... because they feel that they almost understand them but not quite -- as evidenced by the surprises they sometimes get when ordering the special from the slate.

Wonderful!

When people ask "what are the must do's in Paris" my first thought is usually "go walk around a big Monoprix" and my second is "walk around looking at menu boards and relating them to the kind of people eating in the resto".
