Paris RER C upgrade impacts service
Until August 25, the line between St-Michel and Invalides will be out of service. The upgrade, codenamed "Castor" is to insert concrete under pressure under the subsiding roadbed.
A substitute bus service runs regularly between the park just south of the Air France terminal to Odeon.

We ran into this construction on our way into Paris a 2 weeks ago. We were going to transfer from the RER B Line (from CGD) to the C Line. There were some very nice tourist helpers with yellow shirts that helped us find the best alternative route to our hotel on the Metro.
It was really fairly easy.

Unless it's changed in the past couple of weeks, that also applies to the same line (RER C) from Austerlitz to St Michel. The bus actually runs from Austerlitz to Invalides along the river and then the return goes mainly along St. Germain going back the other way.
But thanks for the clarification of the name. The busses are actually called "CASTOR" busses, and I had no idea what that name meant.

They have been doing such work on this part of RER C for years and years - why don't they just start new and rebuild the whole portion of that line, where trains have always crept along at snail-like speeds.

SNCF at least runs it partly - perhaps with ratp
but the reason railpasses are valid on RER C is because the sncf does run it in part or full - other RER lines not run in part by sncf do not honor railpasses - the others that do are RER B above Gare du Nord and RER E and D i believe - though there is conflicting info on whether railpasses are good on those or not.

This part of RER C was built by French Railways i believe as long ago as when the Gare d'Orsay - its terminus - and then there was a gap though tracks were built along the Seine between in and the Air Terminal from where passenger trains went west.
Gare d'Orleans or Gare d'Orsay was later moved to Gare d'austleritz and passenger service abandoned i believe for some years.

SNCF runs all of the RER C. I do not understand why it is taking so many years. They close it every summer for a month and yet the work just goes on and on. I would prefer that they close the whole damn thing for 6 months and do everything that needs to be done.

Actually, a full set of renovation projects are grouped under the name Castor (which means "beaver"
. It's supposed to conjure up the notion of a busy beaver building a dam or something like that (note the pictures you sometimes see accompanying the term).

Along with the RER C, it's worth noting for those visiting Paris in summer that this is when a lot of metro/RER work gets scheduled, due to the holidays. SO there are always some stops or lines that may be closed, and if you are going to be there a while, or planning everything out, it is a good idea to view the RATP website www.ratp.fr to see if the line you are counting on is closed. For example, if you planned to stay in some hotel or apt. due to its great metro access and that stop were closed for the summer, you might be a little inconvenienced.
This summer, I stayed in Montparnasse part of my time in Paris, and there were two major stops that were closed (prob until end of August or so, also) -- la Motte Picquet was closed to line 6 trains, so you couldn't get out there, and place d'Italie was closed for line 7. The line 6 closure made me scramble a bit to work around that (walking to Dupleix from where I was) as I have one favorite restaurant in the 15th and like to hang out there a bit.
