Paris places of interest for young fashion / design student?

Traveling first half of July to Paris with 18 yo niece who is pursuing a career in fashion design. She has done a couple summer courses at Parsons and FIT in NYC and will start a degree program this fall. There are a couple meet a designer offers on the "meeting the French" page but would appreciate recommendations anyone might have for other things that might appeal to her. We'll be staying in the 3rd but can get around quite easily using public transport. Thanks!

I was going to suggest Musée Galliéra (the fashion museum), but the building itself is closed until 2012, and only the research library is open. However, they are putting up an exhibition elsewhere:

There might be something of interest at the Arts Décoratifs:

If she really likes fashion I would definately take her to Didier Ludot, Galerie Montpensier and Galerie de Valois. He is an expert in haute couture vintage...

Too bad she missed the Yves St Laurent retrospective @ the Petit Palais last year! But ... the YSL foundation is putting up an expo thru 17 July, on YSL's pret a porter line (rive gauche) that she might find interesting. Details here: http://www.fondation-pb-ysl.net/medi..._gauche_uk.pdf

Parsons has a program in Paris -- http://www.parsons-paris.com -- and their summer program should be in session. She might be interested in visiting one of their fashion classes, or otherwise leveraging her Parsons connection to take advantage of anything they might have to offer...

There are two fashion museums in Paris, the one that is closed is in the 16th and owned by the city of Paris. The other ones is called Musee de la Mode et Textile and is in the same building as the Louvre and the Decorative Arts and Publicity museums. I don't think it is as good as the one in the 16th, but sometimes they do special exhibits that are of some interest. In any case, I think it is open while the other is not.

Thanks, this is exactly the kind of info that I hoped to receive. One of the reasons I love living where I do is that around here "dressed up" means your jeans have been washed in the last month so I am not exactly a fount of fashion knowledge.

It's worth checking www.whatsonwhen.com to see if there are any special fashion events/exhibits during the time you'll be there.

Well, she is just tickled about the ysl exhibition; turns out he is one of her favorites. You hit a home run with that, Nina!

StCirq - yes, I have seen the 4-7 July dates listed for the FW2012 shows and it could work with a bit of planning (we arrive the afternoon of 6th) but having some difficulty finding info on specific shows/venues. Anyone have a link to specific info?

Thanks to all!

I don't think it is that easy to get into those industry fashion shows (espec haute couture), you have to have an official invite or be fashion press, a celebrity or something. In NY, you can't even get in as a regular buyer, as far as I know. In any case, this is the official trade website
http://www.modeaparis.com/

They don't have detailed schedules listed for July yet, it appears.

Thanks, Christina. I had been on that site and as you note there is no info posted about the July shows other than the dates. Yes, aware that these are neither open to the public nor an easy invite.

Seamus - Glad the YSL will be of interest. I'll be in Paris next week, so will keep an eye out for additional places/activities that might be of interest.

BTW, I can't wait til my nieces are old enough to be allowed to travel overseas with me!

Hi Seamus --

I haven't seen this yet, but have been seeing signs for it around town: an exhibition of Madame Gres' designs at the Musee Bourdelle, open thru 24 July.

Info site for exhibit: http://www.parismusees.com/madame-gres/

In case your niece is not familiar with Madame Gres: http://www.independent.co.uk/life-st...s-2252067.html

Thanks, Nina - added to the list. Hope your Paris visit is a smash hit.

Niece will attend FIT in NYC next Fall so will also seek recommendations from there.
