I am leaving on Wed. and will be in Paris for one month..returning Oct. 11th.
I will have my laptop. I am staying in a www.parisperfect.com apartment.
I can post dining, sight seeing and even search for something for some of you, perhaps.
Let me know if you are interested.

What an offer. Sounds like a wonderful trip. Perfect time of year. Enjoy.
I have friends leaving for Paris Sept. 17. If you are familiar with Casa Olympe in the 9th, they'd be interested to get your perspective. They've booked for lunch but are having second thoughts after reading reviews with somewhat differing viewpoints.
Will also be interested to hear about your parisperfect accommodation.
Have a wonderful month.
Joan's post are always wonderful.

How I wish I were going to be in Paris when she's there.
I am going to be in Dubai for part of the time.
..Looking for anything and everything French
Karen
<a href="http://www.bonjourparis.com">Bonjour Paris</a>
A bunch of us are meeting up for breakfast* and tattoos on the 26th.
Why not come along - if only for a drink if you don't fancy breakfast?
Details here:
http://www.fodors.com/forums/threadselect.jsp?fid=2&tid=35138735
*well they call it lunch - but they're just trying to mess with my head.
I just went to the GTG website and asked if I could join!! No tatoos, though!! Sounds fun.
Karen, have not seen you on Fodor's before. Yes, I'm sorry that we have missed each other, again. We can try for Spring!! Hope you made that airport transportation reservation OK.
Re Paris Perfect apartments. They are regular stays for me. I find that I can't do better. I like the St. Dominique/Bourdonnais area. Feels like home when I arrive.
Joan
Enjoy your visit, Joan

Joan,
Have a wonderful trip...of course, we'll be interested in hearing from you. As you know, DH & I can't wait to return to a ParisPerfect flat in spring '09. Meantime, we'll visit vicariously through you! Bon voyage, EJ
..have a great time. I am off to Paris just as you leave. I am looking forward to any comments you may make esp re small restaurants for an evening meal.
I will do some posting while there...I always try some good new places...all prices. Have made these advance reservations..La Regalade, the Bristol Hotel High Tea/High Fashion Show, Les Ambassadeurs (Crillon) for brunch, Spring for both lunch and dinner (not on the same day!)Gerard Besson, l'Epigramme, Fables de la Fontaine (always the Constants, on a regular basis)..many, many more on my list. Will do my wandering around..Never too much planned in advance..depends on the weather for the day. No problem in keeping busy!
I am confirmed to join the lunch GTG on the 26th at Chez Lena et Mimile! Sounds like fun..minus the tattoos!!
Now to just hope that my luggage arrives with me..........
Joan
Looking forward to your restaurant posts. I've heard mixed things about l'Epigramme: from raves to disappointment, so I'm very interested to hear some details of your meal there. La Regalade was our top pick last time and we'll return again when we're back in Paris in May 09. Don't miss it. Spring was good, but I thought over hyped.
Have a great time!
I have been to l'Epigramme twice for dinner. Both times were really very good..and the price is certainly most reasonable.
I have also been to La Regalade twice for dinner. It is an excellent spot.
Daniel Rose has a good thing going. I have been twice and will be doing lunch and dinner this trip..
There can be what appears to be an off visit anyplace..sometimes you make a mistake in what you order. Can happen anyplace, anywhere!
I have lots of new places that I am going to try. I do enjoy some of the "big" hotel bars for their "light lunches". I have enjoyed Le Meurice a number of times..Will add others to my list. Might be something that many would like to give a try!
All will be fun!!
Plafield...
I have another Paris Perfect apartment rented from April 14 to May 13, 2009.
Never know, our paths may cross.....
Joan
We're virtually overlapping, Joan. I'm hoping for good weather although this time of year you have to pack for all possibilities. We're also planning to go back to la Regalade this time, and were thinking of l'Epigramme.
We've had two dinners at Spring in the last year and adored the first one, just blown away by the quality and inventiveness, while the second was quite fine, but nothing spectacular.
JulieV, I loved our meal at Casa Olympe last fall. We went on the recommendation of a friend who's been eating there for years; it's his favorite in Paris. Although not necessarily a comment on the food, it's also a favorite of designer Jean Paul Gaultier. We saw him there and I've since heard it's his "cantine". He was certainly greeted as if that were the case.
http://tinyurl.com/6bgg49
I bet all those tattoo places will get a sudden rush after your post!!
Shellio,
A few good spots:
Au Gourmand, 17 r. Moilier
Le Florimond, 19 ave la Motte Picquet
Le Clos des Gourmets 16 ave Rapp
Le Folle Avoine 91, r. Grenelle
Huitrerie Regis 3 r. de Montfaucon
Chez Pierrot 9 r. Amelie(simple place)
Au Petit Tonneau 20 r. Surcouf (simple place)
La Ferrandaise 8 r. de Vaugirard
So many, many more....
Enjoy....
Joan
Correction Aur Gourmand the street is Moliere
Joan
Shellio, thanks for the recommendation on Casa Olympe. My friends will be relieved and now excited to be dining there. Appreciate your reassurance.
Drooling here.
Joan, seems our taste in restaurants is quite similar! I really enjoyed Au Gourmand as well as many of the others on your list.
Unfortunately, I'll miss you in May because although I land at CDG on the 9th, I'm onto Belgium for a week before spending another week in Paris.
I am hoping for a GTG at some point while we're there and so wish I could be there for the upcominjoy!
I will enjoy hearing about your Belgium trip!!
Could easily do that with my Paris visits....
Enjoy...........
Julie,
This is from a good friend who stays in the area and a very good judge on restaurants..for what it is worth...
"We have eaten there several times as it is on St. Georges close to some of the places we have stayed. Olympe Versini was the female wonder chef of Gault-Millau about a decade ago when she was in Montparnasse. She is from Corsica and some of the dishes have a Corsican flair. It is a proper little restaurant, linens, etc, and usually you have to reserve. I would not cross town to eat there but if you are in the area it is of good quality."
Which of the parisperfect apartments have you stayed in? They all look so nice.
I travel alone, so I don't need one that is too large....
I have stayed in the Grenache, Kir, St. Amour and will be in the new Meursault for a month beginning on Thursday. I also have next Spring in the Kir (but it may change to a different one) and Fall taken care of..deciding which with Madelyn.....
They are nice places..you can easily become spoiled.....
Dear Joan,
After 3 trips to Paris, we splurged and spent last October in Paris... had not one day of rain. Weather was idyllic!
A few highlights: lunch at Ardoise on rue Thabor just off rue Rivoli, hot chocolate at Angelina (commonly recommended but truly the best!), noodle soup at Higuma on rue St. Honore or rue St. Anne (quick and cheap and a change of pace from rich food), Stohrer's pastries on rue Montorgueil, Margueritas at La Perla, quiche carried out from Lenotre (many times!), Musee Carnavalet in the Marais, the 9th floor rooftop cafeteria/restaurant of Printemps dept. store...fabulous view., Jacquemart Andre Museum and its lovely lunch, duck confit at Allard in St. Germain, and an affordable dinner at quaint Perraudin in the 5th. And, bread everyday from Eric Kayser.
I always meant to make a trip report, esp. to thank the person who told me about the All Belgium ticket to Brugges. We saved a ton combining it with train fare from Paris. Charming trip to take, and a wonderful hearty Belgium lunch at de Vlaamsche Pot...Waterzoi and beef stew were perfect. Also many were eating afternoon snack of huge, crispy waffles with tea.
MAP
I was also in Paris last October. I stayed in the Paris Perfect Grenache. I told a person that I knew that I had space for her if she would like to go. She had never traveled before..it was a special treat for her. I planned some thing for her as a firt timer and off she went and I to whatever. She really enjoyed herself.
I do remember the last half of the month being a bit chilly..glad that I had that coat that I had!!
Sounds like you made the most of it. Lots to do..for everyone....
Joan
Joan,
Yes, I remember scoffing at someone's suggestion that I throw in a pair of gloves. I wore them several times near the end of our trip. I have really enjoyed reading tips from Fodorites and will look forward to your trip report later!
I keep reading good things about a restaurant called Paul Bert for steak frites.....let me know if you go!
MAP
I always take a black cashmere cardigan with me..it is packed! I also have a wool scarf. Layering is the name of the game. I have been watching the weather. Nights can be cool. I live in Asheville, NC...our mountains create a big difference between day and night temperatures.
Not sure about going to Paul Bert. Yes, it has had some good reviews...a very busy, crowded place..will see!

Most of the ParisPerfect apts are great, we stayed at the Reisling, and it was great, its nice to come back to a comfortable large apt, after a long day out.
I dont think this is their most sought after apt, especially for elders, as the 3-4 fliughts of stairs can get to you after dragging sitcases and bags up each day.
Also, I would think about bringing warm clothes this Sept/Oct, as this so far is a cooler Aug/Sept than last year, and last Oct was pretty cold as well, I say this from experience. This AUg I bot an a/c for our apt, only to find we needed it for 3-4 days.
Intex,
Yes, the Reisling is an unusual one for Paris Perfect...both for the location and the lack of an elevator. Most are in the 7th..really, my preferred area.
I think I am prepared for the weather..........
Joan,
Another afterthought....Cafe Constant in the 7th was good. I loved the Ille Flotante for dessert, and overall, the lunch prices were moderate. Two charming Parisian ladies were lunching and helped us order. We encountered friendly people everywhere. In fact, a clerk in Stohrer's on rue Montorgueil gave me a box of macarons as a goodbye present! I saw him later on a Samantha Brown travel episode.
Correction in my above post: Rue Mont Thabor is the street name, and L'Ardoise the restaurant...really good.
MAP
I know the Constants well. I have been dining with them for many years, Their restaurants are right along St. Dominique..Cafe Constant (I start off with breakfast there, often), Les Cocottes, Violon'dIngres and Le Fables de la Fontaine.
Mont Thabor also has Le Souffle. I have been to Ardoise..several years ago...so many, many.....
Grace,
I really dont know why so many people prefer the 7th over the 6th, and why ParisPerfect has all their apts. in the 7th?
I really think the location of the Reisling is ideal, maybe someone will enlighten me on the merits of being in the 7th.
Intex,
You will find that many do not prefer the 7th over the 6th!
For me, the 6th is good for first timers..lots of activity. I took my granddaughter and her husband to Paris in April and rented a Parisian Flat apt. on r. Dauphine while they were there. When thy left I moved into the Paris Perfect St. Amour apt. on r. Bourdonnais on the corner of St. Dominique. The 7th is not so crowded, touristy. It has more top notch and bibb gourmand restaurants than the 4th, 5th, 6th combined..for whatever that is worth...I love having the Eiffel Tour as a neighbor..always in view! The 7th has a very village-like atmosphere. The buses and metro are very convenient to every place..so many places to walk to.
I think Madelyn has something on their www.parisperfect.com website re the 7th and their being there pretty exclusively..they are branching out a bit.
Don't know how helpful this is. I know when I arrive in the 7th that I feel like I am in my Paris area "home"!

Joan,
How do you like the new apartment?
Joan,
if you are checking the posts before you leave,
I will be arriving on the Sept 19 ad leaving for Nice on the 29th.
I'll be meeting you on the 26th at the GTG but maybe I will be able to find you before and we can have lunch together.
You certainly know the places to go.
I'm staying in the 6th arr. on Rue du Rigaud.
I'll have my laptop with me and try to reach you through this thread when I arrive.
Regards
Mahya
bookmarking for October trip, and thanks to gracejoan3 for the post, and to everyone with such great ideas.
Mahya,
I arrived early..a tailwind. I lucked out again, had all 3 center row seats to myself!! Luggage arrived with me, driver was waiting with my name on a sign and we were off. My France cell phone worked when I turned it on and called Paris Perfect to say I was on my way. The gal was waiting for me in the apt. when I arrived. She helped me set up laptop, showed me everything..have free calls to US. Apt. is great...high windows, 7th floor with Eiffel Tour right out my window along with many other sights. I walked down to Le Florimond and made early (7:00) dining reservations for tonight..then I will call it a night!! All unpacked
I cannot find Rue du Rigaud. Are you sure that is right? Anyway, yes, we can get together. Lunch/dinner, what day is best for you? I am going to Spring for dinner on the 19th,but can work in another day...what interests you?
Joan
Sounds as though you're off to a great start, Joan! Keep us posted!
Sue
PS What airline had 3 middle row seats empty? What luck!
Sue,
I lucked out in April the same way...Delta...
Part of the trick is to watch online and watch for others in front of yours that are also empty. They seem to fill them front to back..also check at gate and see what is available.
I can't believe so many people wait til they get to the gate to even get their seats...
Most wonderful cross ventilation up these 7 floors...I know it will be beautiful tonight...I can't wait to eat and go to bed!!!
Joan
Joan, glad to see you arrived in Paris with no trouble, and to have three seats to yourself on the plane, how lucky!
I hope you plan to keep us up-to-date on what you're doing so we can live vicariously through you until we arrive.
Have fun, and we'll see you on the 26th.
Gina
Hello Gracejoan3,
Hope you enjoyed your first day in Paris (how's the weather?). I will be leaving in a few weeks and I am counting the minutes...
How was Le Florimond? I was thinking of putting it on my list of places to eat. Let us know the yummy details. Did you ever eat at L'Escargot Montorgueil? That's another one I was thinking of trying...
-Roberta
Hi GraceJoan,
glad you had a great flight ! And I'm glad you're there ahead of me.
How;s the weather ? cool like Fall here, or still warm?
I've only been to Paris in the Spring (April and May )both times, and found it to be coooollld. Of course being from Florida 40,50 and 60 Fahrenheit is cold for me. If it would just stay 70 it would be perfect.
Anyway Joan, I'm counting on you to report the weather before I leave next
Thursday.
I'll still be jet lagged I suppose when I arrive on the 19th - so annytime after that.
Look at the map of the 6th arr, and then look to the left of Luxembourg Gardens.
Rue du Rigaud is a tiny street,, about three blocks South and to the right of a
Monoprix.
Gosh ! I hope it exists, I already sent a deposit
Le Florimond is a delightful place. It only seats about 30. I believe that they have a lot of locals who know how good they are. They did have at least 2 groups of Americans who arrived before I left. A nice coupld sat next to me and were somewhat awed wih the menu and began asking me. We ended up visiting for some time. First trip to Paris and they were pleased that they had found thenselves to be in the 7th. Staying at the Hotel Walt.
When I arrived there were two tables occupied...don't know how they beat me for my early time! I did enjoy my dinner. I was then told that the woman at one of the table wanted to buy me an after dinner glass of wine...she did so, and I thanked her..a charming place and I was treated as if a long time guest..
The weather was almost hot yesterday. Rained very hard while I was dining. Early morning (8:00) grey now..temps appear to be in the mid 60's for hi's and next few days lows into the 40's. Some rain to be around. I use Yahoo weather and check the 10 day forecasts..they probably all give the same. Layered clothing!
Mahaya..are you certain of the spelling of your street? I do see a rue de Regard near the Rennes metro. Are you thinking of lunch or dinner? Simple or snazzy place? We can put something togetherwithout a problem....
a bientot, Joan
Mahaya,
I'm going to suggest this restaurant, La Folle Avoine, 91 rue de Grenelle...lunch or dinner..you choose..here is a good review to read: http://tinyurl.com/3tt6cz
It is on my list of places to try..I will call for reservation once we have decided...
Joan
This is a wonderful thread. I, too, am leaving in about 4 weeks, and although I have most of my itinerary and restaurants planned, I still a lot of work to do. I am especially interested in weather, although we all know that can be quite fickle and unpredictable. I've only been to Paris early, mid- and late summer, never fall, so this will be a challenge to pack appropriate clothing for both my husband and myself. At least I'll be able to pack some nice fall clothes (and a pair of gloves!) instead of the usual summer fare of capris and a Lacoste shirt.
Roberta (there seems to be a lot of Roberta's on this site. I'm a different one!)
Joan,
I tried to get a ParisPerfect apartment but they're still sticking to the 7 day minimum requirement. They are probably pretty filled up since the week I'm in Paris coincides with Fashion week. I'm staying in a hotel in the 7th.
Thanks for the info on Le Florimond! I may switch around my reservations since they aren't open on Sundays. L'Escargot Montorgueil may be my Sunday pick - have you or any other Fodorites eaten there?
Freberta (the other Roberta!)- I am leaving in a few weeks and will put off some packing until I check out the weather. We went to Paris 2 years ago in October and it was very warm during the day (no sweaters required). I'm hoping for another warm spell...
-Roberta
Yes, it is called layering, for sure. I actually find the Sept/Oct weather better than the April/May weather. I try to go for a month both times..Spring can be very tricky.
Beautiful but cool day today..feels good...sweater orlight coat..probably a coat tonight.
Lot of street closings today and many, many gendarmes around..they expect some 150,000 turnout for the Pope. I will just stay right here in my lovely 7th area.
Out for breakfast to Cafe Constant..stopped at the marche..caught up on some computer and paper work and the walked over to Bistro Vin Sobre on Ave Duquesne. I sat outside and had some turbot and a very nice, light squash..a fresh raspberry dessert and a glass of wine,of course! I walked back and spotted a great place that I will try in the morning for breakfast..a tea place of some sort that also serves lunch and dinner. Looked quite nice. Will have to some googleing to see what it is!
Enjoy.........
Joan
Robertal,
Yes, PP does like the 7 day...unless there just happens to be an odd period number of days that could be possible. I can forward what you posted to Madelyn (owner) and see if could help..but...the fashion time of the year is a pretty filled time to try for....
No familiar with the escargot place you mentioned...someone out there must be!!
Enjoy...
Joan, I'm looking forward to hearing your review of La Folle Avoine. It's on my list too and I'll value your input as to whether it's worth traveling for as I don't stay in the 7th.
Sounds like you're having a marvelous time!
Playfield,
La Folle Avoine is in the east part of the 7th, near Rue due Bac, and should be pretty easy to get to from anyplace. It has had quite a bit of talk about it.
I will make a reservation as soon as I hear from Mahaya re lunch or dinner.
I walked back over to Duquesne and found the little spot I had seen previously. I am going in the morning. I will check it out. It might be a discovery! Absolutely nothing on Google or Mappy..must be new. Will get all the details in the morning.
6:00 here and some cool air coming in. Will be a cool evening and early morning..feels good
a bienbtot........
Joan,
If I wanted reservations for Le Florimond on a Saturday night this October, should I contact them now or do you think it shouldn't be a problem reserving it when I get to Paris? Seems you were able to secure one the same day.
-Roberta
Robertal,
Will you be here a few days before the Sat. that you want the reservation? For no more than 4?If so, I would not think it to be a problem. If you would like, I can make it for you. I am less than a block away. They usually want your hotel name for a contact, or for you to call them when you arrive to re-confirm. I will be here til Oct. 10th.
Be happy to make the reservation for you...
a bientot....
Joan
Joan,
You are too, too kind to offer making the reservations for us! We are just so excited to be making our 3rd trip back to Paris and we try arranging dinner reservations ahead of time. Two years ago, during Fashion Week, it was difficult getting into the restaurants we wanted (not that we didn't enjoy our meals elsewhere!).
Only if you happen to be strolling by Le Florimond again, we are looking for 9:00pm reservations (for 3 people) for Saturday, October 11th. We're staying at the Hotel Duquesne. By the way, what did you eat? We love those details.
Thank you for your offer! We're taking a ladies only trip (spouses/kids not allowed) and dream of doing what you're doing (a whole month!!). Some day...
-Roberta
Roberta,
All I will need is the name! I will probably do it tomorrow.
The place where I am going for breakfast is on Duquesne..If it is good you may want to check it out..will see how close to your hotel.
You gals will have a great time!!'
You arrive the day after I leave...
Joan
Thank you again, Joan!
The reservations can be under the name "Roberta". Enjoy your breakfast tomorrow - let us know how it is!
-Roberta
Hi Joan,
- it will be wonderful to have your company (and knowledge of French menus
lol lol,

I'm amazed at all the restaurants you know !
Of course you are right, the street is rue du regard where I have rented the apt for 10 days. Too too bad that it is getting so cool -
and rainy. It presents a problem for me because I only want to bring one large suitcase and a carry on, but I'm going to Nice after Paris and Athens after Nice...so I expect them to be warmer than Paris - meaning two different types of clothing - bwwwaaaa - in one suitcase ?
> I do see a rue de Regard near the Rennes metro. Are you thinking of lunch or dinner? Simple or snazzy place? We can put something together without a problem....<
Joan, I think to meet for dinner would be nice and I don't mind if it's on the snazzier side since I wouldn't go snazzy to eat alone
so I leave the choice of restaurants to you. I should tell you that I have preferences for fish and veal, not so much beef, and I have chicken coming out my ears .
How about Saturday night Sept 20 ?
Before I leave the US I should receive my French cell phone and when I receive it and the French phone number I'll give it to you.
I hope it doesn't rain the whole 10 days I'm there
I had visions of walking through and sitting in the Luxembourg Gardens enjoying a warm sunny day.
Mahya
Hey Fodorites,
Look what I found is going on in France for Sept 20 and 21st. And for free!

Mahya,
How would you like to go to the l'Obelisque for dinner in the Hotel Crillon on Sat the 20th? I can make the reservations..
Joan
48 this morning...for next week similar lows and highs from low to mid 60's..with some possible showers.
Mahya and all,
We have reservations at l'Obelisque for Sat Sept. 20, 8:00. We can then go into their bar and have an after dinner cognac..or whatever..how does that sound??
I am making reservations at La Folle Avoine for Tues. Sept.16th.
I went to the little place "Flirt'The" 3,ave. Duquesne for petite dejeuner..cafe with crem, baguette, croissant, orange juice 8 euros. He also serves lunch and depending how busy may stay open til 5..his board listed about 10 different items for lunch..many salades..all in the 13 euros
area...it is a simple place!
When I stepped outside this morning mobs were heading towards Invalides for the Pope..they expect about 150,000. When I returned after breakfast you could hear all the music and I could see some stands in that direction..I am staying right here in my 7th domain today..plenty to do and places to dine.I will stop by Le Florimond for Roberta's reservations.
I was told that some rain maybe later today..will see..has warmed up for the early chill!
a bientot.....Joan
When you ladies have had enough French cuisine and want to venture out of the 6th/7th, come over to the 4th and have Italian at L'Enoteca on Rue Saint Paul, corner of Rue Charles X. Italian spoken in the kitchen and genuine dishes. Was there yesterday and very reasonably priced.
Enjoy!
s
Have been over to Grenelle and made dinner reservations at 153 Grenelle restaurant for this evening..very pretty place..met the owners..
Wandered down to Les Cocottes and ran into Christian..he speaks less English than I speak French..fortunately a nice gal could translate for us..Catherine will be there about one..I will return..I had e-mailed her that I was here.
Went into a little shop around corner on r. Augereau where I always find some small goodies..usually wooden chats..voila, another chat!!
I am making dinner reservations for Tues. evening at La Folle Avoine.
I will go up to the Marais tomorrow. Places are open on Sunday in that area.
It is quite warm out now...
Ran into the Le Florimond man..he stopped me on the street. I told him that I would be by to make a reservation for 3 gals.
a bientot...Joan
Gracejoan-
Could you please tell me if the Parisian women are wearing their fall attire yet? We will be there for a week beginning ont he 23rd and I've been following the weather and see it's been in the low 70s and 60s during the day.
Enjoying your reports. Thanks for your help.
I am seeing mixed clothing. The weather is hi 40's in the am and low to mid 60's in the afternoon..should be that way for the next week along with some scattered showers.
I am leaving in a bit to walk over to the restaurant, 153 Grenelle, which is also the address. It is a very, very pretty and small place. I will see what the ladies are wearing there...so many tourists in the area now, as usual this time of the year.
I will let you know later about all..
a bientot.....Joan
Thanks and I'll await to see what your thoughts are. I am more interested in what the Parisian women are wearing vs. Americans or other cultures. Thanks and have a great dinner.
I just returned from a great dinner at 153 Grenelle. Roberta, I know that 3 gals would really enjoy this place..lunch or dinner!!
The French women that I saw were wearing fall clothes.
It is a bit breezy out and somewhat chilly..has sprinkled a bit..trying to rain..should be down in 40's tonight...seems to warm up pretty fast....
a bientot....
Joan
Joan,
So glad (but not surprised) you had another great meal in Paris. We will definitely keep 153 Grenelle in mind. Hey, but you must include your menu choices to wet our beaks!
It's funny you ran into the owner of Florimond while walking around. From all these posts I'm reading, you seem to be our resident Parisian, especially with your up-to-date local weather reports! Details like this are valuable to those getting ready to travel!
- Roberta
Gracie Joan,

Many thanks for the weather reports. It is colder than I expected and so I'll pack accordingly.
I have my fingers crossed that I can get out of here before another hurricane forms. In truth I'm running away to France to get away from them.
>We have reservations at l'Obelisque for Sat Sept. 20, 8:00. We can then go into their bar and have an after dinner cognac..or whatever..how does that sound??<
Mon Dieu - l'elegance !!
I think I would be happy to just sit in the lounge for a few days and drink in the atmosphere.
Joan, what a wonderful way to start out my trip to Paris ! I'm already planning which little black dress I should wear - and somewhere I have an old Hermes scarf to dress up the plain coat I'll be bringing. I'm certainly looking forward to this
Fodorites,
]
I am trying to pay online for a fashion show billettt at the Galleries Lafayette for 21 Sept.
Problem: It is written only in Francais.
Some knowledge of Italian and Spanish has helped me to some extent, but I am stumped when it is asking for my Fnac and 8 number "chiffres bas adroit"
and a "FNAC"
I think it wants my credit card number, but our CC 's are 16 numbers - it cant be asking for a social security number. ....and then it wants an address
[ I suppose they only want zee French people attending this otherwise they would have written it in German and English and maybe even Japanese
Then they want your address - is that the address on the CC [if I get that far] or is it the temporary address in Paris ?
Soon, soon I will begin French language lessons in earnest - but until then,
HALP !
Mahya2,
Shall ws meet in the Hotel Crillon lobby a bit before 8:00 on the 20th??
Roberta and all,
153 Grenelle..Entree:I had a foie gras that was sauteed or (?) on top of some celery..melted in your mouth.Main: canard confit..2 plates with the duck..the 2nd had some mashed potatoes, the first one had some peas and some greens. I skipped the cheese course. Had 6 plates/dishes of various dessert items, cafe creme!
What was interesting as an American. I am using the European use of silverware more and more at home..some of each. While here I try to use it completely. Add some peas to a plate for most (?) Americans can create a fun situation! You can't push them on the back of a fork, you can't stab them very well..doesn't look nice, either...you can just decide that you really don't care for peas, and not eat them..or give up and change hands for your fork!! Last night I watched a table nearby of 4 French people. They also had the confit. The man in easy view, with the fork in fist, simply rolled it to be flat and used the knife to push the peas onto it...voila..simple..for him! Americans..go to the store and buy some frozen Birdseye peas and dump on a plate and try it!!
The European use of knife and fork can be so delicate and a joy to watch, when done so well. How did this difference happen? Most of our ancestors are from Europe. When they left the "old" world for the "new" world did they want to change the way they used their silver? I don't think it came from the American Indians. Someone out there might know.I laugh every time I think about the difference in knowing the location of the 1st floor!! Europeans reading this will be laughing.
Weather forecast for today: hi 66 and sunny..can hardly beat that!
a bientot....Joan
Roberta,
I just made your reservation for Le Florimond. Saturday, Oct. 11, 9:00 for 3 people. You do need to re-confirm upon arrival in Paris:
01 45 55 40 38.
Joan
Grace:
Really enjoy your posts! Have a wonderful stay-the perfect time to be in Paris.
Taking notes for my long weekend in December.
Joan,

I have been following your post with great interest, especially the weather conditions since I will be arriving in Paris on Friday!
Thank you so much for the up-to-the-minute correspondence!
Now I just have to get through the next 3 days at work!
Lowlander,
The weather is beautiful..going to be for next 10 days..but,weather does have a way of changing...it is layered type...bright and sunny, but a bit of coolness in the air..sweater, light jacket..also depends where you are coming from!!
Joan
This little "Flirt'The" place that I found is really a find! 3, Ave. Duquesne..next door to Derby Hotel.
I have been going there for breakfast, as I previously mentioned. Today I went there for lunch. They have a board with 9 items on it..13 euros. I had a grilled chicken, which was a drumstick/thigh, a flan des legumes(excellent)along with a nice green salad, bread, of course,a glass of wine and then an apple and berry crumb dessert..total 23.50!! Simple, tables a bit crowded, some outside, very clean and neat and most friendly owner. Is open til maybe 5, depending on business..he does tea and dessert..cooks on the healthy side..not too much sugar, etc....keep it on your list.
Joan
Gracie-Joan,
I haven't received the phone in the mail yet, but they tell me the number for Europe is 06-25-36-85-85 and I expect to arrive at the apartment some time after 11 AM.
Mahya
Joan,
You are a gem! Thank you for making the reservations for us, we are looking forward to it. We will definitely make a stop at Flirt - it sounds great.
Continue with the details of your visit. So far, your trip sounds wonderful!
-Roberta
Roberta,
The little place is Flirt'The..like Flirt tea....
Mahaya..I have your number..if we somehow do not connect by phone I will see you at the Crillon shortly before 8"00 on Sat!!
Did I give all the great private car service that I use for the airport? If not, it is:
www.shuttle-inter.com They are great..55 euros for 3. Right there waiting with your name on the sign.
Enjoy..Joan
Hi Joan, we share your love of this part of the 7th; you might want to check out Leo le Lion, across the street from Florimond. The chef, Didier Mery, is from Le Divellec, and specializes in great seafood dishes. More pricey than Florimond, I admit, but much less than Divellec. Also, I haven't seen any recent posts on D'Chez Eux; have you tried it recently?
Gracie-Joan,
Many thanks for the shuttle info, although mine is already arranged.
Now that I'm packing more or less what would be winter clothing, I hope the weather has not suddenly turned to 80 degrees !
Please keep me posted. I leave about 2 PM on Thursday.
Regards
Mahya
Good morning...
I will give Leo the Lion a try..read some pluses and minuses..D'Chez Eux...have not been in several years..did Putin dining there spoil it?
Upon returning home last night ave La Folle Avoine, the tiny place almost beneath me..Max or something..need to look at it..anyway, it was packed!! Tiny..a bar, tables..had white tablecloths.
La Folle Avoine: They had moules as a special..I could not pass that up..a large bowl of moules served with a side bowl of frites. I then had dessert and a cafe creme. I restaurant seats in the 20's. Pleasant. Gal who became quite rushed..nice, but not real professional..or maybe just a bit "green". I don't think I would go across town for it...153 Grenelle probably a better choice between the two. I will give it another try while I am here..order something from the carte.
Looks like another bright sunny day..who knows what I will find today...a bientot....Joan
Thanks for the report on La Folle Avoine. Yes, it does sound as if it's not worth traveling for but a nice neighborhood possibility for those staying nearby. Please do post if you try it again.

"Did you ever eat at L'Escargot Montorgueil? That's another one I was thinking of trying..."
I went there for lunch today with my family. I go there every time I am in Paris, it's one of my favourites. But I have to say it has become quite expensive.
We had 2 x 1 dozen escargots as starters, 2 main courses, 1 small main course (grilled fish on potato puree) for child, 2 deserts (they charged 14E for a chocolate eclair!), 1 glass of wine, 1 coffee and 1 badoit. The bill? 196 Euros!!!
Still the best escargots in town in my humble opinion. The atmosphere is great, still an institution, with the price tag I may add!
Give it a try by all means!
Enjoy Paris!
s
Swagman,
Thank you so much for the info on L'Escargot Montorgueil! There are 3 of us going to Paris who are fans of escargot.
We were a bit confused about how many/what flavors to order (basil, curry, roquefort...) We figured we'd mix up two or three dozen and then move on to the main courses (like you did). There's a chocolate souffle we want to try there as well!
Thanks again for the review & details!
-Roberta
Tonight I went to a little restaurant almost beneath me..7 stories below, that is. Cafe Max,
I love it..exudes funky character..red ceiling and molding, black walls with many pictures and large mirrors..big bar and large mirror behind it.Small place.
Max is a jolly character. Appears to be a large local following..younger working people who gather for drinks and then dinner. Max fills large bowls with ice and puts in bottles of champagne..they line up and gather around br. They were just starting to sit down as I left.
Chilly today..a scarf felt very good..just plain cold tonight..glad I did not go far!!
The ET is doing its on the hour sparkle right now out my window!!
A bientot.....Joan
Swagman,
I went on L'escargot Montorgueil's website after reading your post. I love snails and only eat them on special occasions (way too fattening with all that butter). I have a question -- I would like to go there for Sunday lunch, but only order snails. My husband, who doesn't particularly care for the little critters, would order something else. We already have dinner plans that evening at Mon Vieil Ami and because we aren't big eaters (especially at lunch time), I don't know if I can have two big meals on the same day. Would I offend the restaurant if I only ordered, say, one dozen escargot? I just can't eat all that food without needing a nap afterwards.
Thanks.
RobertaL
If there are 3 of you going and you all love snails, get the 'Spiral' - 36 snails in all 3 flavours for 66 Euros. I'll let you in a secret, I had that all to myself a few years back, yum yum!!
freberta
Not at all if you just want to try snails.
The table next to us today were two young ladies from Hongkong. One ordered a dozen, the other ordered half a dozen and they ordered a bottle of still water. They were still being served courteously. I spoke to them afterwards, they were sisters and the younger one studies in London. So they could be on a budget but have read somewhere about the 'must try' snails from L'Escargot. So there you go.
BTW, I should mention whilst there was no 'Menu Enfant', my son's grilled fish was really really good and they charged 12E for it. The French really know how to look after children in restaurants.
Enjoy!
s
Swagman,
Thanks for the words of advice. More than 30 years ago, I was travelling through Europe with my college friend who had spent her junior year in Italy. While we were in Italy, she insisted that I order all the courses, but all I ate at the time was pasta. I'll never forgive her for making me spend all that money on wasted food (that was before the age of credit cards and all I had was $1,000 in traveller's cheques that had to last 2 months and cover lodging, meals, souvenirs, etc.). But again, thanks. I will order my escargot and be as happy as a clam!
freberta (Roberta K.)
Joan, I'm bookmarking this site to save for our visit next year!
gracejoan3
I have been staying in the 4th the past couple of weeks and it has been great. I find it to be a real working part of Paris.
Have you ever stayed in this part of Paris?
I think I read somewhere along you have been staying over in the 6th/7th exclusively for some years. I would like to do that on our next trip.
In your opinion, what are the main differences between these arrondissements?
Your advice is much appreciated.
s
Swagman,
I have stayed in apartments in the 6th, Ile St. Louis and the 7th. Hotels in the 1st, 6th.
I do prefer the 7th. It has a great village feel..more top and bibb gourmand restaurants than 4th, 5th, 6th combined. So many things to walk to, along with excellent bus and metro. It doesn't hurt to have the ET out your window, either. It feels like home when I arrive here.
Many areas to stay in and enjoy them all...
Thanks gracejoan3 for your advice. We will sure try staying in the 7th on our next trip. My wife will be particularly happy about that as she wants to go to Bon Marche!

Sadly we are leaving the city of light tomorrow morning, for St-Remy-de-Provence.
Paris has been great. We went to see the Tour Eiffel the other night, it was a spectacle to say the least and particularly so in the EU Blue that they are doing this year.
Given we are travelling with a toddler, we have also spent a lot of time locally in the Marais, exploring its side streets, hallways etc. We will just walk around the Bastille today before coming back home to pack
I hope you enjoy the rest of your time in Paris. As you are aware, it is getting cooler but at least sunny. No matter what the weather is like, Paris is still a wonderful city.
Enjoy!
s
Swagman,
Have you been to St. Remy before? If not, you are in for a real treat. A favorite area of mine. I love the Alpilles. Here is a special spot for me:
http://www.riboto-de-taven.fr/
Lovely people, excellent food, beautiful grounds and can walk up Les Baux after the crowds have gone for the day..you are away from its crowds. Beautiful area to walk in.
Enjoy your visit.....Joan
Today was to be alight day for eating.
I went for my usual breakfast at Flirt'The
Cleaning people came today and I got out of their way. Had a number of errands to run and things that I wanted to do.
A bit chilly out. A scarf feels very good!
I decided to stop by Cafe Max and see what he could do for me for lunch. Told him some kind of salad sounded good to me. He brought me a delicious salad..greens, thin slices of duck, olives, tomatoes, walnuts, mushrooms, good bread, a glass of wine. What more could I ask for.
Max's wife came in..a much younger gal..very nice. He brought her over and introduced her to me. We visited a bit. They have bought the place immediately below me and are having it re-modeled..was supposed to be finished by now..but are they ever finished on time? I check on it every day.
Last night's crowd was the norm for him. Lunch is mostly politicians and lawyers. He had many bottle chilling in a large bowl filled with ice. They come in, stand at the bar and have wine, some snack goodies and carry on some "big talk" before sitting down to a table.
Max would not let me pay for my lunch...can't get much better than that!!
a bientot........Joan
Hi Joan, I am enjoying reading your posts. I would read a daily journal of your days in Paris/France if you would write it. How about a blog? They are so easy to do. (See mine at www.maggiwun.blogspot.com). That way we can all live through you vicariously!
gracejoan3
Thanks for the link.
Yes, we have been to St-Remy, special part of the world isn't it?
We were in Provence back in May, on the other side though, in the Luberon, stayed in Bonnieux for 3 weeks. But did not get to St-Remy or Les Baux, so thought they warrant a visit before we fly out of France.

Salut Joan!
Hope you are continuing to enjoy yourself in Paris. Thank you for all the info (and reservations) you have provided. I plan on visiting FlirtThe as well as Cafe Max. They're both close to my hotel (very convenient, merci).
Too bad you will miss the big autumn festival at Montmartre. We went there a few years back and loved it. It was purely by coincidence that we are travelling the same weekend this October (the first time we went to Montmartre, we stupidly thought the festival took place every weekend).
However, I would forfeit the festival if I could stay in Paris for a month...
Let us know how dinner is at L'Obelisque. And by the way, I'm not yet thinking what to pack because I am sure the weather will warm up in October (fingers crossed).
Keep us posted...
-Roberta
Roberta,
The earliest for Cafe Max is probably 9:00..lot's of activity after that. You gals could probably have a fun evening there, and close to home!
Flirt'The will also be looking for 3 attractive American gals!
Had breakfast, went by the marche, bumped into friends..never know who you might run into on the streets of Paris!!
I am off for some wandering and not sure where for lunch..something simple as I am going to Spring tonight. A "friend" (not met) coming by to see my Paris Perfect apt. and spectacular views before out 8:00 taxi comes to take us for another great evening with Daniel Rose and his ever popular Spring restaurant.
Roberta, I have enjoyed the l'Obelisque often for lunch..this will be my first for dinner. I am sure that we will enjoy it and then on to their great little bar for something after. You gals might want to try some of the "big" hotel bars..Le Meurice is especially nice..light lunches, too..also a good potty stop when you are out and about!!
a bientot............Joan
Roberta L:
When is the Montmartre autumn festival? What is it? Is there a website with more information?
Thanks.
Roberta K.
The Fete de Montmarte is 6-12th of Ocitober this year

When I went to the autumn festival a few years ago, all around the Sacre Couer area there were wine and food vendors. There were raw oysters, potatoes gratin, cheeses, sandwiches, fois gras & more! We ate and drank on the steps of Sacre Couer listening to music. It was alot of fun.
I'm unsure if it's more lively on the weekend but we are going again this year on a Saturday (Oct. 11), just to be sure!
Here's a link but I believe it's only in French.

Along with my wanderings this morning I was wondering where I could have a light lunch...kept finding one oppurtunity after another..the I came upon a past favorite Au Petit Tonneau. I stuck my head in and asked if it would be OK for me to stop by about 12:30..bien sur!!
Off I went. I was on the lookout for yet another scarf...bought one, but longer than I wanted. I had seen another that I liked, but I didn't like the 127 euro price! I found one of the curly ones..acrylic, but fine for this time of the year..better price..25 euros!
I was back to Au Petit Tonneau for lunch. Guess what, they had moules! I ordered the moules along with a green salad, good bread, white wine, tap water and a cafe. I also learned somnething about eating moules. Am I the only one who did not know this? You take an empty shell and use it like tweezers to remove the moules...voila!!
More wandering this afternoon and then home to receive my guest before we are off to Spring!!
a bientot...Joan
Just returned from dinner at Spring. It was stupendous!! For thos of you who don't think you like the idea of no choice, no menu. We both said we would like "surprises" like that every night!!
It was foie gras, rabbit and roasted (not baked)apple for dessert. But the accompanying tastes with all these items were out of this world. We oohed and ahhed with every bite!
Any trip planning use a 1010 number and call Daniel and see if he can find you a spot. It could easily be your dining experience of your trip. I thin he is only serving lunch on Thursdays and dinner, you just have to see what might be open. I find calling him about 6:00 am EST can be good..most often I get Daniel. I will be there for lunch next Thursday.
Not as cold....
a bientot..Joan
Joan, I googled Spring and came up with Daniel's blog:
http://www.springparis.blogspot.com/
Salut Joan!
Spring sounds like a great experience! I wish I could fit it in for a lunch during our upcoming trip (IF they had openings!).
You mentioned Cafe Max doesn't get started until after 9:00. Is it a good place to socialize/have drinks after dining elsewhere? That's what we're looking for on this trip. We seem to always eat dinner and go to bed, exhausted after a full day of exploring.
FlirtThe is expecting 3 attractive American gals? We will try to accommodate. My two friends, Toni & Marianne, thank you as well. When we go there for breakfast we will ask for...Max? Of course! And we'll tell him..."Joan sent us!"
-RobertaL
Roberta,
Don't know the name of the fellow who owns Flirt'The, but he is the only one there. Max is Cafe Max. You could sure drop in to Cafe Max and see what was going on.
Yesterday I went to Pasco, 74 bd. de la Tour Maubourg. Right around the corner from me. Attractive place. Open 7 days, lunch and dinner, which is good to know.
Last night I went to the Hotel Crillon for my dinner at l'Obelisque. Had a nice table that I had requested. A pleasant, enjoyable evening beginning with a Kir and ending with a millefeuille dessert and cafe creme.
While waiting in the lobby for someone I couldn't help but notice that not too many years ago most of the people who I saw would not even have been allowed in the hotel dressed as they were! Shabby jeans, carrying motorcyle helmets...a different world! Even the dress of some in l'Obelisque..men in tee shirts...but, they are guests of the hotel!!

Hello Grace-in-Paris,
I am enjoying your reports on the various restaurants you have been trying out.
I was interested to see you had a meal at Le Vin Sobre, 35 Ave Duquesne, but you did not make much comment about the food. Was it A-OK?
Reason I was wondering was because we had lunch at their original Bistro Vin Sobre, 26 Rue Feuillantines, 5e., and the food was really good.
Another highly reccommended Bistro on this forum, Le Bistrot du Peintre, 116 Ave.Ledru-Rollin, 11e., was unfortunately closed for renovations this past May when we were in Paris. The food is described as good home-cooked food if your mother was a very good French cook! Their Tart-Tatine was some of the best I've ever eaten.
If you have a spare moment could you possibly find out if there is still a restaurant open to the public at Maison de l'Amerique Latine, Blvd.St-Germain. It is the centre for Latin American Affairs in Paris and I heard it has a lovely restaurant in a garden in the centre of the 18thC building - you'd never know it from the street, however. The phone number form the US was 011 33 1 49 54 75 10.
You are so lucky to be joining my friend Gina at the GTG - she is a charming lady which I met at a GTG in Paris!
Tod...
Here is the website:
http://www.mal217.org/commercial-index.php
It looks like it is still open. You can probably e-mail them for more info.
Vin Sobre..I had a quick lunch there. Was not that impressed, but would give it another try as I had heard good things about the other one...Joan
Many thanks Joan,
It looks like a wonderful venue for lunch on a sunny spring day!
Yes, please do try Le Vin Sobre, 25 Rue Feuillantines, up near the Val-du-Grace. They also have a website with photos of some of their dishes, but the restaurant doesn't look anything like it today - much improved!
One more -
I had one of the best lunches in Paris at Patrick Masbatin's out of the way restaurant, L'Aiguiere( French people only,no tourists).
at: 37bis, Rue de Montreuil, 75011.
Tel: 01.43.72.42.32
I dined alone and had no reservation.
Tod,
You are welcome. It does look like a good spot.
I am also looking forward to meeting Gina. Sounds like a nice person. Too bad you will not be here.
Roberta,
Do remember that Flirt'The is closed on Sunday. I think you are arriving on Sat..you may feel like something good and convenient..go there. He is expecting you!
Cafe Max: I told him about you, too. Sure, you can drop in late and have after dinner whatever, visit etc..and be close to home!!
I did Pasco's for dinner last night. It is an attractive place. Seems to have a very good local following....

Joan:
On the Valadon thread, I saw that you will be staying in a new PP apartment-will you be switching on this trip? Their apartments look terrific...someday when I have more time!
weekender,
Yes, I am in a Paris Perfect apt. now..arrived on the 11th. Madelyn wants me to try the new Moulin a Vent...it is not on their site yet. I do have a site for it that is being changed as all develops. She wants me to move in probably on the 1st. I will be leaving on the 10th.
Yes, they are nice places with every amenity that you could imagine and then some. Very caring for your needs, in every way.
Joan
Bon jour Joan!
Hope all is well and the weather is nice!
I'm getting close to our trip so I'm figuring out metro routes. You & I seem to be in the same general area (I'll be on Duquesne). I am thinking the closest metro is Line #8 at Ecole Militaire. Also, the #10 line at Segur doesn't seem far either, right?
We're also planning a day trip to Champagne and need to get to Gare de l'Est. I was going to take the #10, transfer to #4 but there might be an easier way. I think I have an old metro map because I thought I noticed additional metro lines (#14?) on the internet. My map has 13 metro lines. Of course, we can always take a taxi.
-RobertaL
Robertal,
Yes, you are closest to Ecole Militaire metro...that is Line #8..for Gare de l'Est take it to Opera and change to #7 in direction of La Courneuve to get to Gare de l'Est. Pick up some new Metro Maps at Ecole Militaire Metro.
Many places will be awaiting the arrival of the 3 attractive American gals sent by Joan!!
Hope to hear from you all upon your return!! I know you will have fun!!
Joan
Thank you for the metro info. I don't know how I missed that #7 line. Sometimes I look at the map for so long, I miss the most obvious routes!
I will be keeping in touch.
-RobertaL
Robertal,
Stop in a tabac and pick up one of the Le Petit Parisiens by L'Indispensable...I like the 3 Plans per Arrondissement..has the map, the metro and the bus pages for each arr. They are dark blue, in color. They are great...
Joan
A great find today!!
Le Clarisse, 29, rue Surcouf, just off St. Dominique. Only been there for a year.
Absolutely lovely in every way.
I am going to make dinner reservations there when I know for sure when my out of town French friends are coming in to join me.
Joan
Joan:
Keep up the good work! You should be an investigative reporter. I am taking notes.

The website pictures really do not do it justice. It is really very, very pretty. I'm sure at night with the lighting that it is lovely.

Greetings Joan,
Love all your posts. We will be arriving in Paris with our family on September 29th, staying in a ParisPerfect apartment in the 7th. My sister, her husband and daughter will arrive on October 3rd. They will be staying in the 7th, as well. I am looking for a restaurant that would accommodate nine people on Friday, October 3rd., do you have a suggestion?
Many thanks,
DianeBee
DianeBee,
How old is the "daughter"? Are you looking for a simple brasserie type or what did you have in mind? Give me an idea and it would help...
Joan
DianeBee,
I think Le Florimond could handle your group. You can google and read a lot about it. Also, I will be there for lunch on Thursday and could ask about 9 people and could even make your reservation. You would need to call after arriving in Paris to re-confirm, so they know that you did arrive. If you want me to do that for you, I will need something better than DianeBee and a time that you were thinking of. I would then get back to you Thursday.
Joan
I am soaking up all your comments gracejoan and making notes for my next trip!
If DianeBee cannot be accommodated by Le Florimond ( which was our Fodorite GTG venue in 2006 but only 3 of us) may I suggest a great family style restaurant which needs little advanced notice, namely Le Batifol, 1 Boulevard St.Germain or at 78 Champs Elysees.
Bon Apetit!
Tod, I was thinking that she might want to be in the 7th..if not, there are certainly many choices...will see what she is looking for.....
Joan
I am sorry I wasn't more specific about my group. We are all adults; my husband and I are traveling with our two sons and their wives. My sister is traveling with her husband and grown daughter. I originally thought we might want to stay in the 7th that evening because my sister and her family will arrive on Friday morning. However, I am sure they would be open to a good suggestion wherever it is.
Everyone on this board is so helpful. Thank you,
DianeBee
DianeBee,
You know what I think I would do... "La Fontaine de Mars". It is nearby, as your apt. must be in the St. Dominique/Bourdonnais/Rapp area. Your other 3 must be in the area. With it being their arrival day, they might appreciate it being nearby.
You can just e-mail ParisPerfect and ask them to make the reservation for you. They have your name, telephone # etc. They will be glad to do it for you.
Font. de Mars is a fine restaurant. I think you all will enjoy it.
Enjoy.....Joan
Joan,
Thank you, La Fontaine de Mars was on my list. I will e-mail Phillipe and see if he can make the reservation for us. How is the weather in Paris today? We arrive on Sunday.
DianeBee
DianeBee,
Hi,
Philippe will pass it on from London to local gals.
I am having lunch with Madelyn today. She came over yesterday and will leave late today. Eurostar is a mess because of the fire. She is finishing new apt. that she wants me to move into and give it a try!!
The weather has been absolutely great! Should continue that way at least til I leave on the 10th..or so it looks like...we may pass in the streets....
Have a good flight....
Joan
Yesterday I went to l'Agassin. I was not impressed!
Perfect weather!!
Busy day today..will go to Flirt'The for breakfast. Meeting group for lunch at Le Florimond and getting together with some other Fodorites, Stu and Ellen Dudley, for dinner at Fables de la Fontaine. I will join them for kirs at their www.parisperfect.com "Champagne" apt. before dinner. They are settled in and very happy there!
Tomorrow will be the GTG for lunch with the Fodorites!
a bientot,
Joan
A beautiful day in Paris!! The sun was slow coming out and was partially cloudy, but warm..no coat!
I had my usual with Flirt'The early.
Today was lunch with some nice old friends and Madelyn of Paris Perfect was in town (actually hosted the lunch) and a couple gals who she new joined in. We had a catch up and good time. A great lunch by the way..Le Florimond. Madelyn received a call that the plumber was at the new Moulin a Vent and had to leave..we had finished eating by this time. Yes, I will be moving into the new Moulin a Vent next week!! That's exciting!! Friends joined me back at my Meursault PP apt. We had a nice visit.
Tonight I will be joining Stu and Ellen Dudley for dinner. I will tell all about that later or in the morning........
a bientot............Joan
Good morning Joan!
Wishing you and the fellow Fodorites a very happy and jovial lunch! Please tell Gina I say Hi and hopes she located Glenda.
Looking forward to hearing all about it!
Hi Tod,
I didn't receive your post before leaving for the GTG.
I have just returned home from it. I sat next to Gina and Joy. We visited a lot and I have Gina's e-mail address to write to her and we can do a bit of communicating that way, too.
There were 10 of us. It was a bright, sunny day in Paris. We were out on the terrace. We wined and dined till after 3:30, I would say.
Too bad that you could not join us. Another time. I do a month spring and a month fall, so perhaps.....
I ate so much yesterday that I only had a salad and that is also what Gina and Joy had.
Tonight I am going down the street to Chez Anges.
a bientot.....

Dear *Amazing Grace*
Yes, you are! I've read your posts/adventures and am totally impressed with you!!!
I was in Paris ONCE 10 years ago (2days/1 night).
---> I'm leaving Los Angeles and ARRIVE in PARIS AF 6:30pm *Sept 29* this MONDAY* for *THREE NIGHTS*!
MY PROBLEM: I *NEED* a place to stay for *THREE NIGHTS* that is relatively INEXPENSIVE!!! (close to main tourist sights: louvre, Notre Dame, ET, bustour?, at least one fantastic meal, etc) near public transportation/walking distance/?rail station.
I'd like a clean, safe, bed to sleep. I plan to be out of my room at least 12 hours day.
parisperfect.com is very lovely,... but, out of my price range : (((
I am young-50ish, single, female and want to see as much as I possibly can. (Yes, I'l buy a "Foder's Paris" to read on the plane.) 'Need to study areas of city I ought to focus on.
Amazing Grace, pls, pls, pls,...give me your best wisdom and advice!
Sincerely,
Jan
Jan:
Gracejoan has stayed in apartments for many years.
Why don't you look at the the Hotel Clement? Rates are reasonable and the location is very good.
www.hotelclementparis
Good luck.
Letsdance..
Here is a hotel website that you contact them. It is a 2 star hotel, in a very good, safe location with metro/bus etc.
http://www.paris-hotel-muguet.com/English/TheHotel1.htm
Good luck........
Jan: Take a look at Hotel Langlois. We really loved that place. Enormous rooms, empty fridge (very handy for beverages, cream for your coffee). I have a one-cup coffee maker (picked up at La Carpe on rue Tronchet). It's right around the corner from the Grands Magasins, less than a ten minute walk from one of our favorite spots any time of the day or night Au General Lafayette, and there's wonderful dining nearby, notably Chez Jean.
I told you that you were amazing,...
I fell in love,... Hotel Muguet looks perfect! However,... a single if available is 103 ero,... does that mean about =$200???
$600 ??? for 3 nights is a little steep for me,... do you have any other suggestions???
Weekender--
Thanks for the info on Hotel Clement,... apparently there are several and the site asks for a zip code,... can you clarify name of hotel/zip???? Thanks! --jan
Sorry-try www.hotelclementparis.com
I think you can use an exchange rate of abouy 150 and be about right,,,so the 103 wuld be aout 152...
I may be wrong, but think that is a good price for a decent place in a decent area with all the things you want....
Try the Hotel du Lys; single is 100 euro and includes breakfast. No elevator, though.

Thanks for so much information Joan! We are leaving in less than 2 weeks for Paris and I'm very excited (and very jealous that you get to stay for a month). One question for you - is there outdoor dining anymore at this time of year or is it too cold?
Also, a question for Roberta on the Montmartre festival which looks like fun (and thanks for the link to the website). Is it a very crowded festival? Like it would be a bad idea to go with our toddler daughter and try to get around with a stroller? Is it mostly winetasting? Looks like some music (and marriage proposals?) as well.
Yes, there is outdoor dining. You just take it one day at a time for the weather.
Yesterday was the Fodor's GTG and we were all outside...along with many other people.
Last night I went to dinner at Chez les Anges, 54 BD La Tour Maubourg. A nice place, I had the 25 euro menu, glass of wine, dessert and cafe creme for 44 euros.Enjoyed it all.
Passed another restaurant nearby and people were dining outside. Don't know if by choice or space as it was chilly..windy. They had some protective plastic shades and the upper heaters. I think I would opt for inside, at night!!
I think I will go down to the market at Vanves this morning..after Flirt'The, of course!! Then, I think I may drop in to Les cocottes for lunch or wait and go to Cafe Constant this evening....choices, choices!!
I am enjoying..can you tell?
a bientot.........
I think I forgot to post about dinner with Stu and Ellen Dudley on Thursday.
I went to their www.parisperfect.com apartment...the Champagne. It is soooo lovely. It has wrap around decks..ET right there. As they said, you don't want to leave...you would rather bring food in. Fortunately the Constants are nearby for them to do some excellent take out dinners!!
We had a Kir, visited about many places where we had been and then went donw to Les Fables des la Fontaine (a Constant) for dinner. It is a small place..absolutely great. We were all very pleased with everything! Christian stopped in and stopped by our table.
An enjoyable evening by all.....
I did just return fom Vanves. If I could have called Madelyn (ParisPerfect, I would have. I found two precious carousel horses..not the giant ones, but small ones..perhaps from a children's carousel. Muted colors. He had the tails. They were in good shape. I asked he price for one and for two. I really couldn't carry them..or one...I rushed back and have an e-mail off to Madelyn..maybe they are common, I don't know. I could easily see them in her apts....one in the B/R of the new Moulin a Vent, where I will be moving to. If she wants them, all I have to do is rush back down there and then find a way to get them here...if you hear about some old lady pulling a wagon of some sort with two carousel horses in it, you will know who it is!
I think I will give Les Cocottes the opportunity of feeding me ths noon!!
a bientot..........
Joan
Hello Joan-in-Paris,
Glad to hear all went well at the GTG - are you going to meet up again with Gina & Joy? Did Gina mention Glenda at all - or was she there?
I must correct something I posted earlier. I said we had a GTG at Le Florimond. Not so.
I got mixed up between that restaurant and PHARAMOND, 24 rue de la Grand Tuanderie, 1e.!! Very nice there too.
Joan, seeing you are so close to ET I was wondering if you ever take a walk up Rue de Montessuy? I saw some really nice looking places to eat.
Sally30
The Wine Festival is pretty full-on as one can imagine but is held over three days (when I went 2 years ago). The first days are when all the Pageantry is performed and officials are present & some people dress in costume. I only went on the Sunday. It was so hot we drank ice cold beer - not a drop of wine!
Tod,
Gina had not been in touch with Glenda. She was a bit concerned.
They had a lot to do for the last couple of days..Joy had some gift shopping to do..
Yes, familiar with Monttessuy for many years. Au Bon Accueil is there..it did change hands but still supposed to be good. I will be going there before I leave. An Italian restaurant too, if I remember correctly. Of cours, Le Clos de Gourmets is around the corner on Rapp.
I had lunch at Les Cocottes..I had a cocotte!!
Some marching thing going on..firecrackers many gendarmes..not sure what it is all about. Signs had CEF on them I think, whatever that is!
I have been here about 2 1/2 weeks now..beginning to feel a bit like a Parisian!!
Very warm this afternoon..........
a bientot....Joan
Hello everyone!
Joan, I'm glad to see the weather is warming up (just in time for my trip). Funny, back at home I always feel like a Parisian (in my mind anyway!)
Tod, Au Bon Accueil popped into my head as well when Rue de Montessuy was mentioned. We went there 2 years ago and it was good (portions a bit small). The restaurant is not that big so make reservations if you plan on going.
Sally30, we went to Sacre Couer two years ago, not realizing it was the festival (surprise!). It was alot more than wine. There were dozens of vendors surrounding Sacre Couer, selling so many things (sandwiches, mussels, potatoes gratin, foie gras, & things we didn't try). Go with an empty stomach & don't pass up items you are tempted to try (you'll regret it later).
If you plan on sampling wine alot, be smart and just buy the bottle. It's cheaper. They'll open it for you, give you plastic glasses, you grab something to eat & enjoy it all on the church steps (sounds odd, but everyone does it).
I think you'll be fine with a stroller (lots of uphill walking, but you can do it). We are going Saturday, October 11th - hope it is the same. The area is surrounded by art galleries. I bargained for two paintings which I cherish to this day! Enjoy!
-RobertaL
P.S. Joan, did Madelyn pass on the horses?
Robertal
Have not heard from Madely re the horses...I have probably lost them!
I did go the Cafe de l'Esplanade at 52 r. Faubert..it is right on the Invalides Explanade. Breakfast was same as Flirt'The for twice the price, 16 euros..you pay the extra 8 euros for the atmosphere..all depends what you want. E-gullet has said the place was a bit pricey! I almost made a reservation for later today..but decided to wander a bit.
In my wandering I came across La Cuisine 14, bd de la Tour Maubourg. This is between Universite and Quai d'Orsay. I made a reservation for later today. I already know that I am going to like it!!
Beautiful day today!! Some rain later in the week and a bit cooler is predicted..that can easily change.
a bientot.....Joan
I think I have previously passed on the great private airport transportation servie that I use:
http://www.shuttle-inter.com/
I e-mailed them this morning that my return pickup would need to be changed as I was moving this week to the new PP apt. I thanked them for all the great service to the many people that I told about their great service.
I just received confirmation of the pickup address change..and a note that my return trip would be only 40 euros!! What a deal for this great service. Waiting for you with name on a sign as you exit, take your luggage to nearby car and you are off. They also check for flight delays and make whatever necessary changes...no calls to make, no walking anyplace to wait for anything. Repeat customers can certainly do well with them. I thought the regular price of 55 euros was great!!
You may want to give them a try....
Joan
Thanks Joan for the update on Gina et al.
We ( DH & I) strolled down Rue de Monttesuy very late one night this past May after waiting until 11pm for Lady Eiffel to start sparkling. I looked at the menus and was surprised to find the prices weren't outrageous given the fact the area is very upmarket.
In particular I fancied the little Chinese/Thai restaurant in Monttesuy.
Many years ago we stayed at 35 Blvd.La Tour Marbourg which was a Best Western Hotel back then. Top floor, 2 bedrooms with TV, 2 bathrooms - 1,000Francs a day. It's still a hotel I guess.
The restaurant down on the corner at 58 La Tour Marbourg( all yellow framework) was our first experience with the French way of grilled steak. Rare , to rare, too too rare!
Tod.
The Best Western is still there. I happened to notice it.
Steaks are usually not the best to order in Paris.
I did have lunch at La Cuisine, 14 bd la tour Maubourg..another place I would say is a very good addition to any list of good Paris restaurants.
I then jumped on the metro at Invalides and off to Opera..nice, very nice...I then thought I owed it to myself to walk down the Le Meurice and into their lovely bar and sit down and relax for a bit...that I did!!
I then got on the metro at Concorde and home in minutes!
Very warm out..people were enjoying every bit of it....
a bientot.Joan
Grace,
I've enjoyed reading your posts, making some notes for our upcoming trip. We'll be in Paris Oct. 24-29, after Netherlands and Belgium. We're hoping for good weather, but are prepared for anything.
We'll be in Marriott Rive Gauche, so if you have any particular restaurants, shops, anything we might find useful, please advise.
This is our second trip to Paris, a longer trip in 2006, so we know some basics, but welcome helpful hints. Thanks a lot.
You are in the Marriott Rive Gauche in the 14th, correct?
If so, I would highly, highly recommend that you call La Regalade, 49, ave Jean Moulin, tel 01 45 45 68 58 for a reservation. It is not that far from you. I call about 6:00 am EST using the 1010 dialing..costs about .65.
I will be there next Monday evening. You definitely will enjoy it.
I'm sure others will jump in with some suggestions for you.
I was here last year the latter part of Oct. and it was cold. It might be warm this year..hard to tell..layered is the name of the game!
Enjoy your planning and your tripp....call La Regalade...you will be glad you did!!
Joan
Thank you very much! We are so excited, even with the economic mess here in the US.
Enjoy and post a dining report!
Layers, yes, always the best advice.
I have read aubergine, or eggplant, is popular for fashion this year. Is there really a lot of it out there?
I don't mind dressing like a tourist, my large camera will give it away, anyway.
Hi Joan,
You picked a nice time to be in Paris, away from this economic mess back home.
Anyway, I reserved the transportation company you previously mentioned. It seemed like a great (and reasonable) option!
We're leaving for Paris a week from Wednesday. Haven't packed yet but waiting for the temperatures to creep up a bit! Sounds like your trip is going extremely well (so many great meals...). Have you packed/worn gloves? I hate to think about it, especially since temps in NJ were in the mid 70's today...I need to buy a new pair anyway. Looking forward to shopping at Heyraud for shoes & boots.
-Roberta
Robertal,
You will be arriving the day before I leave!!
No, I have not worn gloves. Stick some in if you have space..never know. Weather is supposed to get a little cooler..some showers.
a bientot...Joan
Roberta,
We're going to Paris 2 weeks from today (that's if my husband doesn't cancel our trip because of the financial crises around the globe). How long will you be there? We're staying a week. Maybe we'll run into you. If you hear someone calling out "Roberta" (especially in a store) it may be my husband looking for me!
Roberta
Hello Roberta,
Our trip this time is pretty short, returning home on Monday, Oct.13. Looks like that's when you'll be going to Paris. Don't cancel!!
RobertaL
We leave Oct. 15, but won't be in Paris til the 24, but we are so excited about it even with the turmoil, maybe even especially because of the turmoil. We need a break!
In NE Indiana our temps dropped 10 degrees since since Sunday, starting to feel like fall, hope we get this kind of weather in Europe!
Safe travels all.
Joan:
How is your new apartment?
I just realized that I had posted this on the wrong thread....here it is:
I have just moved from my www.parisperfect.com Meursault apt. to the brand new Moulin a Vent. It is not even on their website yet. It is Madelyn throughout!! Absolutely lovely, in every way. These places make you want to spend a lot of time in them...that is what the Stu Dudleys have been doing.
Had lunch with my French friends up in the Republique area..they had appointments up there. My metro line 8 right here at Ecole Militaire took me right there. They will be coming in for the evening dining at Violon d'Ingres next Tuesday and will spend the night with me.
I am entertaining the young man who owns the Flirt'The (where I have breakfast) for dinner tonight at either Cafe Constant or Les Cocottes. Nice young man.
a bientot..........
Still keeping up with you...........
Where exactly is your new apartment?
It is 15 rue du Champ de Mars...just a little ways off Bosquet...6th floor....it is all the beautiful extra things that Madelyn does..not normal rental type furnishings...fancy drawer pulls, tassels from drawer pulls..just on and on..the kitchen is fantastic..and I don't cook!Beautiful drapes...but this is pretty much the way that all PP apartments are.I don't have as much of the ET as in the Meursault, but I do have it...........
Joan,
The apartment sounds lovely! It's funny, I ordered something from a French souvenir store last year and it happens to be on 22, Rue du Champ de Mars. I was going to drop in while in Paris to see what they have.
The weather here is gorgeous, hope it's the same for you. Enjoy your dinner plans! We'll be sure to enjoy some morning cafe creme at Flirt.
-Roberta
Roberta,
I just went and looked down 7 floors to see if I could see #22..it must be in next block. I will look for it when I go out in the morning.
This is a busy area..rue Cler is a block away. I never do much on it..more a few blocks away in the St. Dominique/Bourdonnais area.
Weather couldn't decide what it wanted to do today..a bit breezy..some rain could be coming.

Joan:
Your new place sounds wonderful! Enjoy the rest of your stay. Will look forward to seeing it on the PP website.
Morning Joan,
I had a look at the apartment building on PagesJaunes and did a little up & down the street.
Please could you tell me about the largish Brasserie on the corner of 23 Champs du Mars & Bosquet? (On the otherside of Bosquet) It looks quite nice but I will follow your judgement on that aspect.
Hope the weather stays good for your remaining time in Paris.
Tod
What a fun night, last night! The young man who owns Flirt The came by a bit after 8:00. He loved the apt..who wouldn't. We left for St. Dominique..passed Fables..it was packed,Violon looked very busy, Les Cocottes had quite a standing line and we checked out Cafe Constant. 10-15 min., perhaps. We had a glass of wine at the bar...Christian came by and we did our usual exchange of conversation, with my limited Franch and Christian's non interest in learning English! He called to someone and it might have been to seat us more quickly..dooubt it, as people were eating! We did shortly get a table upstairs...the downstairs is mor funky charming! We were seated next to 3 American gals. They immediately wanted to chat with us when they heard my English and Florent's French/English!I had to educate them a bit about who/what Christuan was and all his restaurants along St. Dominique. They were absorbing it all. In due course we did dine..still had that wonderful pumpking soup (rather foamy)with truffle oil and chestnuts. Lorent also ordered it..and enjoyed! He had veal that he really enjoyed. We had a carafe of wine, cafe and visited with gals next to us. I asked if they wanted to add a bit of excite, emt to their evening. They were eager to hear about Cafe Max..many laughs when I told them that they, too, could probably become one of Valdo's fiancees!
We left wondering what had happened to Lorent's friends. As we walked past Les Cocottes one of his friends saw us and came out and we joined them. These are 2 of his neighbors who live in same building. A fellow about Lorent's age and an older woman who looked like someone from the Greta Garbo era...striking, elegant and charming! I think we closed the place! We walked back to my apt...they all agreed, my elevator was truly the smallest any had seen! They oohed and aahed over my apt....we had talked about dropping in on Cafe Max, but at least Lorent had to open his Flirt'The this morning!! I think this is going to be a long day for him!
We will be getting together again. I told thme of "Spring"..a must do for them.
Fun, fun evening..nice people!
Let us see what today brings.....
a bientot..Joan
Joan,
I enjoy reading your late night posts!! The fun you had comes out in your writing. Sounds like you shared good company (Valdo, Christian, Lorent, who can keep up??). Too bad I wasn't one of the 3 American gals you spen time with. Now I have to figure out a way to squeeze Cafe Constant into my plans next week...
- Roberta
Roberta,
I sure had a lot of typing boo boos in that!! I think you got the message, though!
Lorent is the name of the owner of Flirt'The when you go there..you will already know him!! Maybe you gals can get him to go to Cafe Max with you!
Cafe Constant is a true, funky Parisian bistro....sit downstairs, if possible. I think they open at 7:15..no reservations...look at the website..will give you a lot of history of Christian Constant and you can also pull up the 4 restaurants..in English, too.
Just had a little shower..gone now. Things are lining up for next week. 5 for "Fables" on Tuesday evening..my French friends who will stay overnight and some big shots of some sort with American Embass in Paris joining us. All here for pre-dinner Champagne (friends will bring, as he has what he prefers)and walk over to Fables de la Fontaine..about 5 blocks..I am sure they will be impressed with the food..it is a very niny place! That is where Stu and Ellen Dudley and I went..whenever that was!!
I think I will walk over to Lorent's little Flirt'The and have a bite of something..see how he is holding up for the day!!
Tomorrow is the beginning of many, many things...ah, sooo......
a bientot.....Joan
Roberta,
What day are you arriving in paris??
Joan
We arrive on Thursday 10/9 and return home Mon 10/13. I know it's such a short time, but you'd be surprised how much we pre-plan and pack in those few days!!!
-Roberta
I will still be here on Thursday. I am leaving on Friday.
I am going to "Spring" for lunch on Thursday and will not be going out to dinner..not after that lunch.
Why don't you 3 gals stop into my apt. and say hello? I'm not 10 minutes away.
I don't think I want to give you all the access codes on the Fodor's site, but you can e-mail me at my address that I use when I travel:
abbynoelle3@yahoo.com
Joan
Joan,
I finally made it! I was reading the whole thing and found out about your dinner at La Fables de la Fontaine. Sounds like it turned out great.
How's lunch at Spring? I'm sure it was as good as our dinner. Your new apartment seems like it's really great, too. It is closer to where my former apartment was. How is Max going to survive without you next door?
I am missing Paris so much right now. Your reports are making up for it. Merci, ma chere amie.
Lilia
Joan,
I will email you with details of my itinerary that day.
-Roberta
Gracejoan3 - I have been reading your posts with great interest. I am planning a surprise birthday trip to Paris for my husband the first week of November. We will be staying in the Moulin a Vent, I hope! I would love a list of the good close-by restaurants! I suspect the weather won't be great, but who cares?! It's Paris!
Lilia...so glad to see you posting on Fodor's. To others, she is the friend who joined me for the wonderful dinner at "Spring". She also lived in Paris for 5 years..right in the 7th area that I am so fond of! She speaks French well, too!
Abbeau..You will love the new Moulin a Vent. Do you have the website? Restaurants are overflowing in this area...pick the many from this thread...ask about some, if you want...
a bientot
Robertal
I did receive your email. I do hope you all can stop by for a few minutes...I will have some wine!!
I have spread the word that you will be trying to cover all of Paris in a very short time! I think you are going to be pooped when you get home!
I will stop by to see Valdo(Cafe Max) before I leave and remind him of the three of you. Better be careful with him!!
a bientot...........
Joan
Joan,
We never, ever say no to wine! I hope we're in your area late afternoon.
I wish we spoke better French, so we could really converse with all these interesting French people we will encounter (thanks to you)!
-Roberta
Roberta,
Speak what little French you know and you will be well rewarded in reeturn!!
I just sent you an email..I hope you can drop by..we will have wine..red or white, or do you care?
My friend came by and we went to Les Cocottes for lunch and back herre and then off the Ecole Militaire metro to Opera and walked to Galeries Lafayette for the freebie fashion show..you do have to have reservations. Well, we decided that we were certainly out of fashion! We really didn't care, either..most of what we saw, we really would not care to be seen in! Those girls, for the most part, looked anorexic!!
Freind took her bus and I hopped back on metro...decided to get off at old stop and say hello to Valdo(Cafe Max) and remind him of you gals stopping by with "Joan sent us"..he is closed on Sat/Sun, remember. I told him about you 3 wanting to get on the fiancee list..I am still #1 on the list!! you will have to take deux, trois, quatre....He got all upset when I told him about my great evening the other night..Lorent coming by apt. and we going out to eat with friends, etc...he thought Lorent had spent the night!! He always wants to know what I am going to do when I leave..somehow, I always feel like I need have some place to be or someone to meet. We have a good rapport, as long as I keep in mind that I do not ask him to see my apt.......another day in Paris!
A bit breezy today...some drizzle..but it is Paris!
a bientot.................Joan
Joan:
We certainly don't want you to get a "reputation" while in Paris!
Weekender,
When I told many, including my granddaughter, that Madelyn(Paris Perfect owner)said I was a modern hippie, my granddaughter replied to the whole list that she couldn't see her grandmother as a hippie! She doesn't know her grandmother in Paris!
I think I will wander over to Cafe Constant for a bite. No reservations, so just show up...
a bientot....Joan
That's so funny you asked about the wine preference - I emailed you with one of my most common phrases I use in Paris: "une bouteille de vin rouge, s'il vous plait"...
-Roberta
I just ran out for a minute...it's freezing out there..nasty wind!!
Not pleasant...........
Red wine it is, Roberta
Joan:
I may be in Paris for a few days next spring when you are. I will take you out for lunch or dinner-my treat!
In the meantime, I will try and go to Cafe Max and and Flirt'The while in Paris in December. I think I will check out your "boyfriends" to make sure you aren't going down the wrong path.
You are welcome.
Weekender.
Weekender,
You will have to check them both out in December..big age difference. Both nice, in their own way!Lorent is a nice friendly young man with a relatively new business on his own. We will keep in touch via e-mail. His little group wants to join me for dinner at "Spring" in the spring. You will have to take your own chances with Valdo! Basically, a very nice person...but an Italian Frenchman...whatever that means!!
We will have to keep in touch. Fun to get together with others who share some of the same interests.
I will be in a Paris Perfect, here in the 7th from mid April to mid May.
a bientot......
Joan
The Galeries Lafayette little fashion show was yesterday afternoon. Sknny, anorexic looking gals wearing clothes that most of us would not care to wear! The crowning touch was the final..the wedding gown! It was a black shortie nightgown, that we felt she might wear later on that day/night, but not to walk down the aisle in!!
Tomorrow the Bristol High Tea/Fashion show..will see.
a bientot....Joan
weekender,
My previous might have sounded confusing to you..but from posting names oftn you cannot really tell if you are talking with a male or female..like TOD. I found out that this was Dot spelled backwards!!
April/May something or other sounds like fun. We may find some others will want to join in. The local little group that I was out with the other night would like to join me for dinner at "Spring". Daniel should be in his new location by then. I will find out more when there for lunch on Thursday.
I noticed that you stay at l'Abbaye in Paris. I stayed there some years back. A nice hotel, with a good following. Can be difficult to to get a reservation, at times.
I have switched to apts...not that I cook..don't do that at home, so certainly not when in Paris! But, for longer stays..beginning with this one, to stay for a month at a time it is more comfortable. You can really get into the flow of Paris life with the longer stays.
a bientot.....
Joan
Hello Joan, Yep, I'm a gal! Tried to get my own name on but it was already taken so I just did a swop around! Now, I want to know if your first name is Grace or Joan or if one is a surname OR both first names?
You look very nice at the GTG and see you are blond like me. I actually pictured you with dark hair so it was a nice surprise.
Everyone looked more or less as I imagined them especially Cholmondley_Warner. I can see a Major General lurking in there!
I was sorry no-one grabbed Gina's camera and got her in a photo too.
She's a bit special to me as her birthday is on the same day as my husbands & I also had a daughter called Gina. Fancy meeting a person from across the world with so much in common? I don't think that happens very often!
Hi Tod/Dot....We did have fun at the GTG.My posting is just my names backwards. Joan Grace. Having two first names for you name does cause confusion
What a nice day we had to day..the weather is so-so..be sure to bring warm closthes...
We went to the Hotel Bristol High Tea/High Fashion Show..what a difference from yesterday..but this was the Bristol, high fashion designer and cost 50 euros! We had excellent seats. I was one of the first to reserve, I think. The high tea was very nice...the music was very nice, the fashion show was beautiful, beautiful...the models were also very lovely. I would definitely put it on your list. Just contact the Bristol online.
Decisions, decisions now...think I may wander out....
a bientot,....Joan
Thanks for the tip on the fashion show at Hotel Bristol being a cut above the rest. Never been to a show but you have got me thinking for next Paris visit................
Here I am (sitting just behind the pilot) you may like to put a face to the posts!

I would definitely add the Bristol Fashion show, if you are lucky enough for them to have one when you are there. Send an e-mail to them and ask to be notified when they come up. They would send me a notice every month.
Yes, good to put faces with people.
How often do you go to Paris?
I just returned from Cafe Constant. As you know, they do not take reservations and they do fill up. I probably arrived there about 7:15. By 8 a big line...same for Les Cocottes when I went by........
a bientot.....
Joan
Joan,
I've been enjoying your posts this month, especially all the latest on restaurants in the 7eme. I'm disappointed that we'll miss each other in Paris next spring (we don't arrive until May 28th), as we would love to dine with you. Well, let's hope someday...
Enjoy the rest of your Parisian days and safe travels home. EJ
Joan, i've been lurking here for a number of years and have enjoyed your posts enormously. Will be arriving in Paris October 30th, departing Nov 11. Staying at the Hotel de France {thank you St.Cirq , this will be my fourth stay there, all due to your rec
ommendation.}
The reason I am a lurker rather than a contributor is ,I think, obvious.
I not a typist!
I do plan to stay in in an apartment next spring....a Paris Perfect apartment.I have been studying the website for some time and of course receive their emails.
Thank you all for your advise and usefull information.
I will try to post my impressions and experiences on this trip as an appreciation for all the help and and advise I have garnered over the years. ..Again, thank you so much for everything...Vicki
I have had fun in contributing whatever for fellow travellers.
It is fun to share our experiences, our "finds" and the whole adventure of it all.
Some of the joy is the sharing of what we each, as individuals, enjoy. We can't all like the same things, places, areas or dining. I hope that I do not come across that "my" way is the "only" way. Nice to be able to pick and choose from the suggestions from everyone.
I have a busy last few days..Les Ambassadeurs for brunch today, La Regalade for dinner tomorrow, joining friends for lunch in Montmartre on Tues. and my French friends coning in to spend the night Tues. and some people associated with our embassy joining us for dinner at Les Fables de la Fontaine ( and who knows what following dinner), Wed. it is Les Papilles for dinner, Thursday back to Spring for lunch. Then I will pack and Robertal and her group may drop by my apt....may have to take them to Cafe Max!!
My driver is to pick me up at 6:30 am on Friday to head homeward...
I am returning mid April for another month in Paris!!
a bientot.....
Joan
Don't why I said Les Papilles..we are going to l'Epigramme on rue l'Eperon, in the 6th....nice place, a bargain, pricewise........
Joan
Have a safe trip home, Joan. I, too, have thoroughly enjoyed your posts. We are staying in the Paris Perfect Moulin-a-Vent from Nov. 2 to Nov. 9. I will certainly try out your various restaurant suggestions! (BTW, what part of the world do you live in?)
Abbeau,
You will enjoy the apt. If you cook, you will enjoy the kitchen! too many good restaurantas for me.
Walk down a few blocks to Flirt'The
3 ave. Duquesne for breakfast. Tell Florent that Joan sent you!!
Just walk over to rue St. Dominique for all the Constant restaurants and you will be well taken care of..closed on Sunday and some on Monday..common here.
I live in Asheville, NC..another nice place in the world!
Enjoy your planning..that is half the fun...
Joan
Returned a bit ago from brunch at Les Ambassadeurs (Crillon). This is the way to go on a Sunday. Lovely, in every way, beginning with your Taittinger (of course) champagne.
Surprised to see Catherine and Christian Constant waiting to go in, too. Christian says that he see me everyplace!! Told them that I had stumped Nicholas at Cafe Constant last night when I asked who I needed to talk with to get a Cafe Constant apron. They would have to order one, but Catherine would mail to me...I said I would pick in up in Avril!!
I later noticed a birthday cake being delivered to Catherine! I came home and sent her a Jacquie Lawson birthday card.
Christian visited with all at Les A, who know and adore him, for some time. I guess he must have told the Maitre D something about me, as he said that Christian said that I was every place! Nice people.
It is not nice out. Very windy. I don't think I will go out again. Good night to stay in.........
a bientot......Joan
Salut Joan,
Isn't it nice to start off a day with champagne? Your brunch sounded wonderful. We are spending one day in Reims next week and intend to drink (um, I guess taste?)champagne quite a bit while we're there.
Now for a frivolous question: We're can we get a great croque madame? Do you think FlirtThe might make them or do you suggest some other place?
-Roberta
Roberta,
Check this out...sounds like it might be a good place for you...
http://frenchcuisine.suite101.com/article.cfm/croque_monsieurs_et_madames
Joan
Roberta,
Others may have some good suggestions for your request. Let's see what happens
Joan
Maybe Mulot
http://www.seriouseats.com/2008/08/croque-monsieur-aux-courgettes-zucchini-gerard-mulot-best-sandwich-paris-france.html
Roberta,
I went to Flirt'The for my petite dejeuner and then stopped by the marche. I bought a 2007 Morgon and some pistaches (bag label)....do you think you gals can handle that?
Joan
Joan,
That sounds fabulous!!
-Roberta
Robertal,
Wait til you see my elevator!! There are small elevators, but this is much smaller than small. Unless you are 3 very skinny gals, you will never make it together! If you have a camera, you may want a picture. Don't know how you could do it, though.
Knock on my door...the doorbell is very soft..
Joan
Hi Joan,
Hope you are enjoying your last week in Paris - damn sure you are!
hope you get a chance to tell me about my question on the Brasserie at 23 Champs du Mars & Bosquet?
You wanted to know how often I come to Paris - well, almost every year now. Either May or late September/Oct. I have made a tentative plan to come to Paris for a two week spell in Late October 2009 and until about 11th November.
It is going to be a photographic holiday for my DH but I will lead him to all the fab Autumn leaves! Ha Ha!!
Have a great last week in Paris!
Oh, RobertaL - About the Croque Madame. Basically it is a Croque Monsieur with an egg added.
I think every corner cafe` serves it but we had a Fodorites GTG at Cafe Deux Margots about 3 years ago and two of the ladies ordered Croque Madames. OK, but nothing served there will send you into orbit anyway.
Joan:
In my next life I think I want to come back as you!
Yes, I have stayed at the Hotel de l'Abbaye before and it is a great place. I particularly like it when the weather is warm and the patio is open. The caveat here is to book a "large" room.
Earlier this year I stayed at the Verneuil- standard rooms are tiny but the place oozes charm. Fortunately, I booked a deluxe and it was well worth the extra $ to have the added space.
Enjoy the rest of your stay. You will need to go back to N.C. and take to your bed......
Oh Joan,
You lead such an exciting life in Paris. Love everything you do there.
Christian Constant a raison. Tu es toujours la n'importe ou!
Still missing Paris and all your posts are helping me relive every minute..... Merci beaucoup, mon amie.
bisous,
Lilia
We went to La Regalade for dinner. Took thge 28 bus both ways. La Regalade was not as good as last time, but it may be because I ordered pigeon!
Not bad out weatherwise.
Tod I will check it out..what do you want to know about it? Just if it looks OK. You didn't want me to try it out, did you??
Weekender, the l'Abbaye is a nice hotel..yes, ask for a larger room. I have not stayed at the Verneuil, but have friends who stayed there..yes, charm..also the larger room.
The month is running out, but look forward to April!! Hate to think of the mail..don't want to look at stock portfolio...nothing I can do about it, anyway! Dividends are going to be affected. Air and half of lodging already taken care of for April/May. Will need to take a harder look at fall of 2009. Guess we all are doing that.
Busy, busy here til I leave!
We have had a great group posting on this thread. I hope all have had as much fun with it as I have..we can do it again in the Spring!
a bientot,
Joan
Lilia,
So glad to see your post.
Elle has been enjoying our adventures, I do believe. I told her that she has to post to the little forum. She will. Something simple.
May get some nice friends to join for "Spring" in the spring! Wish you were going to be here to do it again. We did enjoy it together. A small group is nicer. Will see.
a bientot new friend,
Joan
If you scroll back on your posts you will see I asked whether you could tell me the name, and that the terrace looks quite nice on the PagesJaunes PhotosdeVille. No, don't try it - just the name will do. Thanks!
Sorry Tod, I will do in a little while when I go out for breakfast.
Joan
OK Tod,
It is called Le Bosquet. It is on the corner with the outside area on Bosquet. The entrance is on Champ de Mars. Nice looking place inside.Today a menu of Cancale huitres!! what could be better, Cancale huitres, good bread and wine!!
a bientot.
Joan
I am doing some last minute packing today. Leaving tomorrow for Paris, very excited!!
This thread has been great - I received so many tips and can't wait to try the different restaurants. Thanks to all, especially Joan!
Looking forward to meeting you in Paris, Joan!
-Roberta
Have a great time, ladies!
weekender....
You should have planned a trip to Paris instead of London!!
Joan
Hi Joan,
By any chance, have you seen any in the stores in your neighborhood? We had dinner at Violon on Saturday night and I should have paid closer attention to the shop windows. I usually find really cute things this time of year.
I have loved reading about your time in Paris. Thanks so much for all of the great info!
I'm in Paris right now and was looking for some unique Halloween candy to take home as gifts to some children on my list. I tried at La Grande Epicerie and they have theirs in stock but will not be putting it out right away.
Thanks for any help and enjoy the rest of your time here!
Peg
Joan:
The original plan was to fly to London, spend a day, and take the Eurostar over to Paris for a few days and fly home from Paris. Don't quite know what happened to that plan! Plan B is 3 days in London.
So, now, I will be arriving in London just about when you are departing CDG.
We want to hear all about your fancy dinner tonight, too.
Weekender
Peg,
I haven't really noticed, but I will take a look at the chocolate shops as I go by. I would think that they would have them now...
Hope you are enjoying your stay..
Joan
weekender,
You have not had the pleasure of a meal at "Fables"? If you like seafood, you will be very pleased.
I was there a couple weeks ago with the Dudleys. We all enjoyed it. Tiny place.
Some "manifestation" going on. A traffic mess returning from lunch in Montmartre with friends. Champ de Mars was blocked and many gendarmes. It may cause problems for friends arriving and also the 2 gov. people.
Hope we make our reservation time! Not much I can do about it. Don't know about the gov. people..they may want something after dinner...could take them to Cafe Constant for cognac or livlier action at Cafe Max! We shall see. You might have missed a fun evening out in Paris! Another time, perhaps...
I'm sure you will have a good time in London. The Eurostar is still messed up because of the fire.
a bientot....
Joan
Joan,
I am missing all the wonderful things you are doing in Paris. I will sure try to get there in the spring to join the group at a Spring dinner in Daniel's new location. Will have to wait and see.
How was the lunch with Elle, Pat and Jim in Montmartre? I wonder if you had it at Le Cafe Qui Parle. Small but really nice place with good food, Pat and Jim's corner cantine as they call it.
Enjoy the rest of your time in Paris. April is not that far away so the wait is not very very long.....
By the way, are the Dudleys from the San Francisco area? I saw a thread on a GTG in San Francisco scheduled for October 24th. It would be the last day of my annual conference with the tribes but I might be able to join (if not too exhausted)to meet some Fodorites.
Bisous,
Lilia
Hi there Joan-in-Paris,
Thank you so much for checking that corner of Bosquet! Please do tell this terribly non-french speaking individual what on earth are/is Cancale huitres?
Just to join in with all this Paris talk of gorgeous restaurant fare I sat on my terrace at sundown this evening and enjoyed two glasses of very cold Domaine Laroche Chablis Saint Martin! It was divine!
Oysters from Cancale, in Brittany, are supposed to be the very best!
Tod,
Grandmere has told you...yes, hutries are oysters and Cancle is where they came from.
I just had some excellent ones at "Fables" tonight. This is the timr of the year for them.
We had an excellent dinner..nice company, nice comversations, good food and great wine!!
I'm also sleepy!
a bientot.....
The weather is warmer..might hit 70 this weekend...but I won't be here!!
Our dinner was really great last night. My friends arrived about 5:30 and the 2 from DC about 6:30. We had some champagne here and then walked over to "Fables". 2 of us had oysters as an entree....they were big, fat beautiful and delicious oysters!! 3 of us ordered the St. Pierre and raved about it. One had scallops and I don't remember what Jean-Paul had...We all enjoyed everything. Stayed there and visited for some time. Walked back to apt..pointed the two fromDC in direction of Ecole Militaire to catch metro. We visited a bit and went to bed.
Jean-Paul went down to the corner wonderful boulanger and we have the nice expresso coffee maker with those little insert things. We enjoyed our breakfast and they were off.
I went out for some last little gift buying and needed to stop by Cafe Max to tell Valdo about the 3 gals who are arriving tomorrow and that they might be stopping by. Also that I was leaving on Friday...nothing I could do but say I would return for lunch today..he will fix me the truly excellent salad that I have enjoyed there. I called my friend who has been joining me on some of my dining and asked if she would like to meet me at Cafe Max..I think she will.
I called an reconfirmed dinner tonight at l'Epigramme and also called Spring..Daniel always answers...to double check arrival time for lunch tomorrow....
When am I going to pack...driver picks me up at 6:30 Friday morning!!
a bientot.............
Joan
Peg,
I happened to be on r. Cler this morning. The candy shops were gearing up with items...one had very cute stuff and peeking inside looked like there might have been Halloween items.....
Joan
Aah Joan,
I don't hear any regret yet about having to leave fabulous Paris - must be because you already have return plans guanranteed! You are SO lucky!
As October has passed the first week please tell me if the foliage is turning gold yet? I desperately want to come over for a photographic shoot next year but don't want to mis-time the best of the Auntumn leaves.
Joan:
The restaurants in Asheville must be in a panic when you are gone....do you keep them afloat the rest of the year?
Looks like I will have good weather in London-a perfect fall weekend.
Weekender
Tod
The change is beginning. I actually thought I might see color here and be home for our color which is usually late Oct. This year was so dry it was thought to be earlier.
weekender
Two or 3 restaurants that are regular places for me have kept up somewhat on my trip. A co-owner of one is coming to Paris next April with wife, 2 children and in-laws. I helped them with a Paris Perfect apt. This is a first trip to Europe for all of them. I will be here for a few days of their trip! Needless to say they are excited! I will have a Cafe Constant apron waiting for me when I arrive in April. I will have to see who is going to get it!!
Yes, I think you are going to have good weather for your trip to London. I'm sure you will have a good time! Bon Voyage!
a bientot..........
Joan
Hi Joan,
Thanks so much for the update on confections! We spent the day in Honfleur so I haven't had time to look around myself. I shall get over to Rue Cler in the next couple of days and stock up.
Thanks again and have a safe journey home. Hope to get to meet you on one of these trips in the future!
Peg
Hi Joan,
I will be in Paris with my 15 year old daughter from November 17 to 23. I have sent an e-mail to Gallery Lafayette for reservation at their fashion show (no answer after 2 days), but after reading your review I think we will prefer the Bristol, however I can't find the way to make a reservation in their webpage.
I will appreciate any info you can provide. Thanks a lot!
I've enjoyed this whole thread enormously! Thanks to all, it has given me lots of clues for our trip. We arrive in Amsterdam Oct. 16, Brussels Oct. 20, Paris Oct. 24, so hope we see some pretty colors and have nice, fall weather. Whatever, we'll enjoy it.
Have a safe trip home.
lagdm
Galeries Lafayette is very slow in responding. Usually need resdervations quite a bit ahead. Go ahead and send a 2nd request and see what happens.
The Hotel Bristol:
http://www.hotel-bristol.com/default.htm
Go to Bar and something will come up about the Fashion Shows. It will have the info about the one that I just went to. You will have to contact them to find out when the next one will be. They may not even have a date set for one, yet. They are lovely.
a bientot.........
We went to l'Epigramme last night. It is really a very good buy. Nice friendly people..tables not jammed in, but it does fill up!
A funny little earlier in the day perhaps laughable faux pas...I went to Cafe Max for the wonderful salad that Valdo fixes for me. Often, in the past a nice, well dressed young man has been there. He was introduced to me as a produce salesperson..3,000 customers. I remembered seeing the large bags of potatoes outsiede Cafe Max and commented re pommes de terre. So, yesterday he was not there when I arrived. About half way through my lunch he showed up at the bar and I said oh, there's m. pommes de terre. It broke everyone up..Valdo began laughing and kept repeating it..along with what I could not understand but clearly with NC and pommes de terre in it. I asked him if I had insulted him..Valdo just kept laughing. There were many well dressed business men in there. I did here another ask Valdo something with pommes de terre in it and looked at me rather strangely! I did ask friends if I owed the man an apology. I was told, no, but the French had probably thought it an odd thing to say and the poor guy was probably going to be called Mr. potato the rest of his life!! He's young, too!!
Off to Spring for lunch! What pleasures to look forward to!!
The 3 gals will be stopping by late afternoon..I have a cute surprise for them, along with the wine!!
a bientot............
Joan
We went to lunch at Spring today. My friend I do believe was thrilled! She is on the wait list for another reservation after I leave.
I will say that I don't care what you like, what is on your diet..you will eat it and you will enjoy it.
Fantastic...we had clams, lamb a baked apple of some sort..everyt bite was so absolutely wonderful...do what ever, but go to Spring!!!
He hopes to be in new place by March, but should be there for me in April/May. I do plan to get a group together to go. I will not be responsible for the group, but something like I get a date and say maybe so many and have a cut-off date that you must call and firm up your own reservation as part of the group...whatever. I think Catherine and Christian Constant may be part of the group! That alone is exciting!
I am partially packed..waiting for the 3 gals!!
a bientot.....Joan
Well the 3 gals did arrive. 3 cute, young, attractive gals!!
We shared the wine, had some great fun talk and they are on their way to confirm their dining reservations at Florimond that I had made for them. Then they are off to dinner and they may go by Cafe Max later...they asked me to join them. I will have to see about that. I do have to finish packing.
It was fun. They took some pictures. We may see them on Fodor's!
abientot....
Joan
Joan,
Thank you for this thread. What a wonderful, fun-filled stay you've had! Thank you for inviting me to join you Fodorites. I will be posting to give some help when needed.
You are right about this group. It has been fun reading all the comments but most of all, you are right along there, entertaining and educating everyone.
Il est toujours de bons plaisir ta connaissance jusqu'a the prochain fois.
bisous,
Lilia
Florent called to wish me farewell and to chat about the 3 gals stopping by.
I then called Cafe Max to see if they had stopped by. Valdo said they were there. I chatted wityh them and then walked down. We had some wine..they had a plate of macaroons..took some pictures with Valdo. One gal's birthday so Valdo put a candle in a macaroon for her. We sat and visited a bit with Valdo and then the gals walked me back to my apt. and they were off to their hotel. They are catching a train to Reims at 9:00...I am catching a plane to ATL at 9:15...........
Has been fun...return in 6 months!!
a bientot...Joan
I've been eagerly following your days in Paris through your wonderful updates. Thank you so much for bringing us along.
I look forward to your trip in the Spring--and am noting things for our next trip.
Have a safe and smooth trip home.
I am home. Non eventful trip..just long and tiresome.
I pretty much just went to bed. Up now due to time difference. I will do this for a number of nights.
I will pick up my mail (a ton of it) early, have breakfast at my usual spot, to let them know that I have returned. I have appointmnet to pick up cats at 10!
Unpacking should come later.
I enjoyed every minute of my month in Paris! I have many new friends, some local and some new ones from this forum!
My apartments couldn't have been better, or in a better location, for me.
Weather was perfect!
I am looking forward to my arrival in Paris on April 15th and departure on May 13, 2009. We can do this again and we can make some plans for those who are there to get together for lunch, dinner, or whatever.
Enjoyed it all...thanks to all of you for joining with me in the fun....
a bientot....Joan
Joan, looks like we'll just miss you by a few days, as we'll be arriving on the 17th. That's a shame, we would have like to meet with you. Thank you for the wealth of insider information you have brought us. I'll be looking forward to next year's installments!
Maggi
Maggi,
I will just have some updated information for you.
I was near the Valadon.
I went into the place on the corner of Valadon and Champ de Mars....I think I would skip it. The boulangerie/patisserie on the corner of Champs de Mars and Bosquet is an excellent one..go there...or go across the stree to Le Bosquet..the one that Tod/Dot asked me to take a look at..
a bientot...Joan
Fantastic! Thanks for the input. I have made notes for our trip next year. Do you have trouble adjusting to being back home? What will you miss the most about France? What did you miss about the States when you were there?
Maggi,
I may have been wishing some friends could have been with me in Paris..and my cats...otherwise I missed nothing!!
Now, I am homesick for Paris!! I wish I was in Paris!!!!
Just had breakfast at my spot and told so many, staff and regular customers about Paris. Picked up mail..can hearly lift it and will now start with it....
a bientot.Joan
Joan,
I don't think I had the chance to thank you for introducing me to the luxury of dining at Le Crillon - so I will do so now - I have been following your travel and I dont know how you remember all the names and addresses of the restaurants, I need to make a small book of your suggestions,
I had such a fun time with all the Fodorites at lunch and look forward to doing that again - unfortunately instead of the 28 days I planned in France and Greece, two days after our luncheon I had to fly home for a health matter. But I too miss Paris and would fly back tomorrow.
I think I wont be able to travel until the health matter is taken care but even though we have beautiful weather now in Florida, I'm missing Paris.
I look forward to our next GTG.
Mahya
Joan, so you have jet lag for several days too. As I told you in my email the other day, this is the first time it has lasted so long for me.
Mahya, sorry to hear you had to cut your trip short because of health problems. The GTG was fun, wasn't it?
Gina
Gina,
Yes, I have several days that I wake up about 3 am in this direction. I try to stay up later so I can sleep later. In the other direction I just hae an easy day, an early dinner with a glass or two of wine and off to bed. I am then all set to go the following day.
I slept til about 5 this am..went to bed early, too. In pretty good shape today. Have most everything taken care of.
Mahaya,
Glad you enjoyed the Crillon, I was there for the brunch in the Les Ambassadeurs restaurant. It was excellent.
I use Zagat's, Michelin and the e-gullet website for up to date restaurant information. I do have a good list with all the info on it. I do update it from time to time.
I will be in Paris mid April - mid May, 2009. I have all my air and lodging taken care of. I will be working on dining as time goes on.
a bientot.......Joan
Hello all! Ready for a quick report?
"Three American Gals" (as Joan refers to us) just arrived home from our short, yet wonderful trip to Paris. I am exhausted but my head is spinning, remembering all the fun.
Joan, meeting you was such a treat! You were so gracious to invite us to your gorgeous ParisPerfect apartment (and the wine was delicious!). It was only a few minutes away from our hotel (Duquesne Eiffel) and it was great meeting Florent & Valdo. We had alot of laughs, didn't we? Now I can say I have some French friends, thanks to you!
For those of you considering an area to stay in, the 7th is perfect. I stayed in the St. Germaine district before (great as well). The 7th is a beautiful area that gets quiet at night, but feels safe. The Hotel Duquesne was a great choice. A quick walk to the Eiffel Tower, Rue Cler, metro & more. We had two rooms on the top floor. Our walk-out balconies faced the Eiffel Tower, to the right was Invalides & in the far distance was Sacre Couer! It was breathtaking. I will try to upload pictures...
We only stayed four nights but we never had a bad meal - Le Florimond was one of our favorites (filet of pork, pumpkin soup, mille feuille). L'escargot Montorgueil was great (36 escargots for appetizer, sweetbreads, chocolate menthe souffle). So was Chez Andre (more yummy escargots & profiteroles to die for). Our lunch picnic sitting by the Eiffel tower was simple yet savory (wine, quiche, jambon/gruyere sandwiches, olives, eclairs...need I say more?).
This is the 2nd time we went to Paris in October and caught the autumn wine festival at Sacre Couer. This is truly an event not to be missed. Dozens of vendors surrounding the area, selling their wines, cheeses, sausages, canard, so much more. Grab all you can eat & drink, sit on the church steps and have a feast. It is such an enjoyable event that we deemed it "our favorite part" of the trip.
A note to Maggi - there is so much to miss when you leave Paris. I didn't miss ANYTHING from the States(except for my husband & children!). It's my 3rd time going to Paris. I keep thinking, it won't be as great this time. The novelty will eventually wear off. But I have been proven wrong...
If anyone wants additional details or have any questions, I will gladly provide info.
As I sip my bordeaux which I just unpacked from my suitcase, I will leave you with Joan's familiar words...
"a bientot"
-Roberta
Thanks for the input, Roberta! Sounds like a crazy, wonderful, whirlwind. Those are the best kind of trips. Can't wait to experience our own, come next May.
Roberta,
This is Mahya whining and wailing ! I would have loved to have been at a wine and food festival in front of the Eiffel Tower...boo hoo hoo - it sounds like so much fun.
Next year. I'll time my trip to catch that. Did you know about it before you went to Paris ?
Gina,

yes , getting together with the Fodorites was fun and informative. Was it Jan who was doing the home exchange ? I would try for that for next year, same time, same place.
We should entice more Fodorites to meet up with us, even those who live in
France. What a good party we could have.
Roberta,
Good to read your report and thank you for the poersonal e-mail, too.
Yes, it was fun when you stopped by the apt. and then later, much later, to get together at Cafe Max. My airport driver was a few hours from picking me up! Glad you used the service, too. I don't think there is better private service..the price to me for last trip was only 40e!! Remember my elevator? I had to struggle to get suitcases in and me, too!!
Next trip you need to spend some time in the St. Dominique/Bourdonnais/Rapp area. Dine at all, or any of the Constant restaurants, Cafe Constant, Les Cocottes, Violon d'Ingres and Fables de la Fontaine. Stay at the same hotel..same rooms, of course.
A fun time..stay in touch...
a bientot...
Joan
Hi, I want to surprise my niece and give her money for ice cream from Berthillon, for 6 days. Do you know the approximate price of a two dip cone? Thanks
I think a 2 dip cone is about 4 euros. Someone else may have better info for you.
I'm sure she will enjoy your treat!!
Joan
Ningenfel -Not sure about the ice cream price. I am sorry I missed having one during my trip!
Mahya - The autumn wine festival wasn't at the Eiffel Tower. It was in Monmartre at Sacre Couer (although we had our own little wine/food feast by the tower!). The festival is called the "Fete des Vendanges de Monmartre" and it usually takes place the 2nd weekend of October. Two years ago, we just happened to visit Sacre Couer the same weekend. We thought it was a giant outdoor market that took place every Saturday and told a relative to go there the following month. Much to her surprise (and ours) there was nothing going on. That's when I researched it and found out it was an annual event!
I forgot to mention we went to Reims(Champagne region) for the day and it was really pretty. It was so easy to get to (45 minute train ride from Paris). There is a nice town center with dozens of cafes & shops. Then we hopped on a short bus ride (15 minutes) and went to the wine cellars of Veuve Clicquot. Very interesting and the tastings were enjoyable, of course. So much, that we enjoyed a bottle of their reserve later that night!
The only negative part of the trip: my aching feet!
-Roberta
Hello all!
I promised some pictures of our view from the Hotel Duquesne Eiffel. All of them were taken from our balcony. If you enlarge the one of Invalides, you can see Sacre Couer in the distance.

Thanks, Roberta, for the pics from your hotel. Those are good rooms, and the hotel is in a good location.
Now you have to figure out how to get the other pics online.
a bientot....

Roberta, I also looked at the views from your hotel room. GraceJoan told me about your wonderful trip and visit to her apartment on Champs de Mars and of course, your great time at Cafe Max. Would be nice to meet up with the group at a future time in Paris.
Looking forward to see more of your photo album.
Gracejoan and Maya I am so sorry I missed the GTG in Paris. I haven't visited the Fodor's Europe site in a long time and now I'm sorry. I too was in Paris during the Paris GTG. How much fun it would have been to connect with fellow Fodorites.
Have any pictures from that event been posted on Fodor's?
I am ready to go back. There are so many other countries to visit but I always go back to Paris. Gracejoan how lucky you are to spend 2 months a year in Paris. I also have cats and how hard it must be for you to be apart from them for such a long time.

There is a separate thread for the Paris GTG and Gina also posted some pictures.
Re my cats. I could not leave them if they were some place in tiny cages! They actually go on vacation when I am gone. A wonderful place called Just Cats. A huge room with places waist high up all around the room to high ceilings with windows etc for them to look out..my two have adjoining spots with a door for them to pass thru. The room is furnished with a sofa etc. My two cats are let out into this room for several hours a day. This building is also surrounded by screening like a pool screening and has grass etc. for cats that like the outdoors. I do not worry or feel guilty with them in this facility.
You must make your reservations way early. I have my reservations for next spring for them.

Here is maybe the final to this particular trip. A couple pictures with the 3 gals from New Jersey..

Dear Joan;
Fess-up Joan, you are receiving compensation from Paris -Perfect
With the way our portfolios have dropped, I could use the extra income!! Sorry about that.
Stay in a Paris Perfect once, and you will join the crowd in praising them....
a bientot...
Joan
Lilliancroft:
Paris Perfect is hardly a secret. Patricia Wells recommends it on her website.
Just curious. Do you happen to own/have an interest in this apartment that you consistently rave about?
