Can anyone suggest a good map of Paris? We're looking for one to take with us (obviously), and would like a decent one. We did buy two guidebooks, but the maps were missing out of both!

We use our Streetwise brand for a detailed city map. I assume this is for walking around while you're there and not driving in the area? Streetwise is great because it's a small size, accordian pleasted and laminated. We buy one for every city we visit. Get them at any major bookstore.

Believe it or not our favorite turned out to be the free one from the hotel lobby. Worked much better for us than the several others we'd purchased at home.

There's usually a terrific selection in the map section of your local bookstore.

Wait until you get to Paris and go to any FNAC store or <i>librairie</i> to find a map, unless you want one published outside France, like Streetwise. I use a booklet called <i>Le petit parisien</i> which has three maps for each arrondissement: 1 for the m&eacute;tro, one for the bus lines and one street map. It also gives a list of the markets and museums in each arrondissement.

We have the Michelin Atlas Paris by Arrondissements. It's a fantastically detailed and compact atlas that's easy to consult. We always try to get Michelin atlases for European cities. We find them the best.

If you are taking a Michelin Green Guide, there are several local area maps that are very good.

No need to carry a bulky map to fold and unfold.

I have picked up in Paris at a news stand the &quot;Paris par Arrondisement&quot; which has a listing of all the streets, the arr. number, and the page number in the map book. It is purse/pocket sized and takes up little room.

For most casual tourists, the Streetwise ones are fine, maybe supplemented by a free hotel one when you get there. The only problem with the Streetwise map is it doesn't extend to the far edges of Paris, it's only the real center. It's good for that purpose, though, I carry one around myself frequently and use one for planning. I like it because it's very sturdy but not big. I think on the Left Bank it cuts off around Montparnasse cemetery, and the Right Bank probably around Sacre Coeur up in MOntmartre.

The free hotel maps (sponsored by Printemps usually, it seems) will cover all of Paris, but they don't actually have as detailed streets as there really are. Streetwise does have all the streets, at least I've never found one missing.

I always use the Streetwise ones, all the streets in Central Paris are on there, the metro lines are included and it is not a great big huge thing to fold up and take with you. Highly recommend it.

If the maps were missing, take them back. Or as someone suggested, Paris par Arrondisement fits in your pocket and will get you to any address. The Michael Middleditch (sp) book is also good for Metro and bus lines.

I prefer the RED MAP. I find it easier to read. It also has major sights listed: hotels, churches, museums, shopping, and other places of interest.

If it is just for &quot;walking around&quot; then the map they give you at your hotel is adequate. If you want to find a specific small street/address, then one of the little book maps are better.

I like the electronic maps on my PDA. I get to choose what PoI show up, so the display is always uncluttered with extraneous stuff. I can zoom to any scale and the software will find addresses or landmarks for me.

If you're thinking of carrying a pocket organizer, mapping capability should probably be near the top of your &quot;must have&quot; list.

When possible we use SREETWISE maps for all our domestic and foreign travel. We used them in London,Paris,Rome,Florence and Venice. The maps are laminated and fold up to 8.75&quot; x 4'.
