Paris Hotel (another)
I'll be in Paris with my wife at the start of September. Over the years we've been there four or five times.
Last time we stayed at the Clement (a 2 star hotel in an excellent location) at the corner of Boul Saint-Germain and Rue Buci.
The hotel is clean and comfortable but definitely a budget hotel. I feel it might be overpriced at 175E for a 2 star hotel. But I really like the location.
On a previous trip some years ago we stayed at the 3 star Hotel Left Bank. Unfortunately neither of us remembers anything about the hotel except that it's right next door to Le Procope restaurant.
I must be in a time warp since I feel this hotel is also overpriced. It must be me.
Has anybody stayed there recently or does anybody have any recommendations for a 3 star hotel in that area in the 250E range or less?
Thanks.

Well, a quick look at Google street view shows the hotel next to Procope is the Left Bank Hotel http://www.hotelleftbank.com/en/
The rate I see for a non cancellable standard room in mid June is 264€.

I've stayed in the Sorbonne when it was just a 2*, and budget, and it isn't really in the same area at all. It's right near the Pantheon.
I think the Left Bank Hotel is supposed to be very nice, that sounds good (and I agree those prices for a budget hotel are high, but that's St Germain).
Danube is around 250 euro for a room better than the smallest http://www.hoteldanube.fr/en/
YOu can get this for about that rate if you prepay http://www.hoteldelavigne.com/en/
This hotel is a bit less than that http://www.hotelsaintpaulparis.com/
as is this, probably 200 euro or less

I think you have plenty of choices, you can always try booking.com and limit it to St Germain and 3*

After a number of trips to Paris, have you considered trying a different location? Many people who have done so -- sometimes against their will due to high season constraints -- have fallen in love with totally different outer parts of the city. Not only have they liked paying half the price they paid in the center, but also the delightful atmosphere of areas with no ring fingers, petition girls, scammers and practically no pickpockets.
People who stay in the outer areas still see everything they want to see in the center -- with perhaps 5-10 minutes more time on the metro -- but they also discover fantastic places that people who stay in the center generally never see.
I probably shouldn't even be mentioning this since the number of foreign tourists in my own outer area seems to have doubled in the last year or so.

I've slept in the 20 arr of Paris.
Plenty of hotels below 150 € if you plan ahead.
September is quite busy (high season actually) so book early. I use booking.com for 95% of my reservations. Hotels.com offers some very low
1->4 arr are the most expensive. If you are horrified wit the prices, avoid these areas.
I like 18 a lot. But there are nice places everywhere...

I have seen the Clement recommended often and sometimes 2* hotels can really be more like 3* (Muguet is another) but they don't quite have the terry robes or something like that. But they also aren't 3* priced.
September is also fashion time and the rates might be a little higher?

I am not sure of the price for these but there are some cute little hotels not far from the area you are talking about off BSG and near the Odeon metro stop. Odeon Hotel, Hotel Louis II, Hotel de Fleurie...I have stayed at the Louis II and Fleurie but it's been awhile.

We stayed in the 14th last time and are staying in the 10th in a couple of weeks. We have also stayed in the 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 7th.
All had their good points, though the 3rd near Place des Vosges and the 6th near the Ecole des Beaux Arts were most convenient for walking amusement. The 14th near Denfert Rochereau was best for transportation, the 7th was worst.
We really enjoy getting to stay in different parts of the city. .

I've only seen higher rates for fashion show weeks in a very few Paris hotels. For the vast majority of them, doesn't matter, September is high season rates, anyway, but no bump up just for that week.
I don't agree with the comment about how 2* and 3* hotels are similar except for perhaps robes. First, that has absolutely nothing to do with how they award those stars (robes), so it can't be for trivial reasons like amenities, robes or anything else. None of those affect the star ratings. And I've been in the Hotel Muguet and it was budget by my standards because the room was barely larger than the bed (the room I was in, anyway) and the bed was pretty hard and uncomfortable. Besides, it isn't a 2* hotel, anyway, it IS a 3* hotel, so not a good comparison. And it is pretty expensive now IMO, although of course not as much as a 3* in St Germain.
I have no idea about the Clement as I haven't stayed in it, but I admit I am always curious about why someone would not like a place or want to stay there again if they say it was well located and comfortable. That is my biggest criteria--comfort. And I personally find a very strong correlation between "comfort" in various ways and the star ratings (and prices to some degree, but within a location, of course). I've never been in a 2* hotel in Paris that I would call comfortable, although I've stayed in several and they were "okay". They tend to be noisier, have thinner walls, cheaper furniture, smaller rooms in each category, more "basic" bathrooms and most importantly, uncomfortable beds. But if I found one I thought was perfectly comfortable and had all those things, I'd go back. YOu can usually get a larger room by buying a higher category in a budget hotel than in a more expensive one (ie superior versus standard), true, and I would go that route if that were the main issue. But often some budget hotels don't even have any rooms that are really that big or "nice." I'm calling 1-2* hotels budget.
