Paris for the First Time - Getting there & Sights

Jump to last reply

My trip will be 2 full days plus half days on the 1st and last days:
- Arrive: Sat -Jun 2 around noon- Gare du Nord
- Depart: Tue -Jun 5 - Flight from ORY at 5 pm.

********** Train **********
Is it necessary to pre-book tix for the Thalys train or is it easy to walk up to the train station Ticket Counter the morning of traveling . It's showing ~66 euros from a town near Brussels (Leuven) to Paris with a transfer at Gare Midi. Do tix prices fluctuate?

********** Sights - Museums **********
Concerning the free 1st Sunday of the month at the Louvre and d'Orsay. Is the line/queue ridiculous? How bad is the wait if I get to the Louvre say 20-30 min prior to opening? Should I just forget the free day to avoid wasting time waiting in line?

********** Museum Pass **********
Not sure if this is worth buying. Especially if I end up going to the Louvre on free Sunday, then the cost wouldn't justify itself.

Question is: is it worth paying a premium just to avoid entrance lines?

The sites I'll probably hit if I were to buy the pass would be only a few since I don't want to be stuck indoors all the time. Thinking of visiting these:
... Louvre (10 euros or free Sunday)
... Versailles (18 euros) - this is a maybe since I may want to spend the day within Paris instead.
... Musee d'Orsay (9 euros or 6.5 euros after 4:30 pm)

********** Around Paris **********
Which gardens within the city are worth a visit?

Which neighborhoods are good for just wandering around in the afternoon / evening / night? I heard the Latin Quarter is a cool place.

TIA :)
