It was 55C on the buses and 50C on the tube yesterday in London (thats 130 Fahrenheit on hour long commutes with thousands of other people crammed into an underground sardine tin). Luckily today was noticeably cooler and cloudier, only 32C (90Fahrenheit) outside.

When I was there in the infamous summer of 2003, I knew it was hot but didn't know Celcius conversions so I just ignored the thermometer. Until I got to Florence and the whole front page of the newspaper above the fold said "40 degrees!!!" I soon learned it was 104. Then I felt hot.
My advice is don't figure it out in Farenheit if you can avoid it!

Be glad they don't all have a/c in those cities or the powergrid would give way.
It will pass, let's just hope that lessons were learned from the last time and that the old and frail are being looked after.

The hottest July day in the Uk since records began. Now I'm not saying that everything printed about global warming is right, but I tend to take several climatologist's word for it over ranchers from Nebraska.

If it were really true that "it will pass," things might be different. But the problem is that these record-breaking temperatures are not passing, they are persisting. So-called "heat waves" are more frequent and longer each year, and this trend shows no sign of letting up.
Just remember, when you read travel guides about Paris and London and other cities in Europe, most base their weather data on trends established over the past century. However, the past decade has been dramatically different, and almost every place mentioned in the guide will be much hotter in winter than the guide indicates. Travel guides will say 74° F for Paris in the summer, but it hasn't been that cool in summer in Paris in years.

AnthonyGA makes an excellent point about the travel guides and their temp. charts based on old data.
As to summer travel, some travelers (i.e., with children in school, teachers) can only feasibly travel in the summer. Even Sept. can be difficult with the Jewish holidays if you celebrate or if your work coverage depends on those who do. I avoid summer travel when I have other options.

It's funny, here on the East Coast the weather has been great-about 87 right now and breezy. A couple of days last week it got up to 97 or so and everyone freaked out-(but that would not be at all abnormal for this time of year). Other than that little spike, temperatures here have actually been BELOW normal for this summer season.
Two summers ago in London and Paris in July, I froze-point being, I'm not sure you can extrapolate much of anything in the way of world temps. getting progressively hotter-at least not at this point. Italy was delightful at the end of August last year, and I expect it will be so again this year-so am very much looking forward to it.

I agree Girlsyptravel. I was in Paris and London from June 24 through July 9 2005, and it was very cool. We expected much warmer weather and did not bring much in the way of warm clothing. We ended up wearing layers of our summer clothes.
