I am going to Paris for my 2nd Wedding anniversary. I have been to Paris before but my wife has not. I most often stayed in the 7th arrondissement, at the Hotel Duquense, But while I am considering several hotels in the 7th, I have heard that the 6th arrondissement offers a more lively atmosphere.
Any suggestions? 6th or 7th? and also any modestly proved hotel suggestions (150-230 Euros)?
Although I like the 7th, it may be a little more quiet and subdued. We are both adventurous so we would liek to "people watch", go to cafes for breakfast and see the sites. It is not necessary to stay at the foot of the Eiffel Tower; we have already booked dinner at the Jules Verne...
Any Suggestions on which arrondissement and possible good hotels in each would be greatly appreciated.

I don't like either arrondissement, but if my life depended on it, I guess I would stay in the 6th. Then again, I would feel foolish spending more than 100€ for a hotel room in Paris.
Why do you not like either? And why not more than 100€?
I prefer the 6th, or the fourth or 5th they are livelier!! I haven't checked the prices lately abut we have stayed at theMillesime,The Verneuil,L'Hotel,and the D'Angleterre. the Danube and the deuc Contininets aaaand been pleased with all of them

The 6th is much more lively than the seemingly sedate 7th.
It seems that hotel prices in that area have skyrocketed in the last decade.
A HUGE factor is when you are going. When are you going?

I've stayed in both, but have stayed in the 6th, quite regularly since the 70s. Of the two, I find it more lively in the 6th.

My impression is the the 5th and 6th are much livelier than the east side of the 7th, although the Rue de Bac and Rue du Cherche Midi areas in that part of 7th are neat. (Don't know much about the west side of the 7th, though it seems to be fairly active at night between the Eiffel Tower and the Invalides). Why a hotel? Why not an apartment? We've stayed at both -- hotels in 2010 and 2011 in the 7th (on Rue de Bourgoyne -- the sleepy side of the 7th); an apartment for 3 months in 2012(on the border between the 6th and 7th). Much prefer the apt. We're renting another one in the Montmartre area for 5 weeks this spring (just wanted to try another arrondisement).
I guess it is livelier, but some folks like the 7th. Really depends on your wife's tastes and habits. I'd think you might just want a change of pace, after all. I am confused as you've been to Paris several times but you really have never been in St Germain and don't know what it is like?
Why not stay in St Germain. I don't stay there so can't recommend any hotel, but a lot of people on Fodors do. That's a broad budget, at the lower end that is only a 2* hotel in that area -- such as the Bonaparte or Clement, they would do. I know folks like the Hotel Madison http://www.hotel-madison.com/

well, those are just a few, I think they are in your budget, maybe the Madison and Left Bank are not, but it might depends on when you are going, also (rates are often cheaper from mid_-July to end of summer).
(PS what kerouac likes isn't really relevant to you or most tourists, he lives there and would suggest most tourists stay in real cheap hotels in outer areas or less nice areas).
Just to reiterate billandcindy's suggestion, in case you hadn't considered it before, you might look into renting an apartment as you're there a full week. You'll find many suggestions on this board but you can start with a search on homeaway.com for apartments in the 6th to see how options compare to hotels in that same area. Apartments often give more space than hotel rooms, the opportunity to do laundry and shop at the street markets or grocery stores and prepare a couple of meals in your own kitchen. Some are fairly luxurious with beautiful views!
