I just read Howard's great Paris report - I am looking forward to our trip there in the summer. I have reservations at Le Regent but, after checking out the Hotel des Grandes Ecoles with its lovely courtyard, I am reconsidering. I think I read that it doesn't have AC and we were advised to be sure to get a hotel with AC during summer months. <BR><BR>Does anyone know of a 3* hotel, preferably in the 6th, with AC and a courtyard?<BR><BR>Thanks.

Jill, I think you're going to find it difficult if not impossible to find what you're looking for. Every writeup I've read about Grandes Ecoles left me with the impression that it's one of the few hotels, if not the only hotel, with a courtyard in Paris.<BR>(PS: Thanks for the kind words.)

The Angleterre on Rue Jacob has an interior courtyard, so does the Millesime. don't know the grands balcons so don't know how they compare

Jill...The Angleterre on Rue Jacob has NO a/c.<BR> <BR>Try the "Villa des Artistes" in the 6th.<BR>It has a lovely inner courtyard, a/c and was completely renovated recently.<BR>It's a 3 star at about 100eu per nt.<BR><BR>

Well, if I have to choose between a courtyard and air conditioning, I will take the air conditioning every tine.<BR>What is so great about a couryard?<BR>The ones I have used were like sitting at the bottom of a well. I was in a small area surrounded by buildings that were 5 and 6 stories high directly above me.<BR>If I want a "yard", I will rent a room close to the Luxumbourg Gardens or similar area.<BR>

Hotel de l'Abbaye on rue Cassette in the 6th has received many good comments here and has a courtyard. It is in the 150-250 range.<BR><BR>http://www.abbaye-paris-hotel.com/

I agree with Bob B. To be in the city in the summer without a/c is nobody's idea of a vaca. Don't forget the grime and noise you'll avoid by keeping your windows shut.<BR>

Bob - <BR><BR>Just to inform, the courtyard at Grandes Ecoles is nothing like a well. It is light, and airy, and simply magnificent to return to at the end of the day. I especially enjoyed eating breakfast there. <BR><BR>For me, I take atmosphere and no AC over the opposite any day. I grew up in the south with no AC (I think we were the only ones), and it has never bothered me. For others, it may ruin an otherwise delightful stay. To each their own.<BR><BR>I highly recommend the Grandes Ecoles, and I will be returning this July. (Oh, and Grandes Ecoles is also close to the Luxembourg Gardens!).

Jill,<BR><BR>I felt the same way after reading Howard's report and seeing the Grandes Ecoles website. I will be staying at the Hotel Millesime in the 6th on Rue Jacob in 2 weeks, I will report back at the end of June.

Bob may have a point about preferring AC over a courtyard, but I'll agree with Grendel that the courtyard of the Grandes Ecoles is far, far, far from being a well! <BR>I'll also quote from The Unofficial Guide to Paris, which selected the Grandes Ecoles as having the "Best Air" in Paris, saying, "Hotel des Grandes Hotel has an exquisite garden that transforms an urban setting into the countryside."<BR>I'll make a deal with you, Bob, I'll go to Vaux le Vicomte next time if you promise to stay at the Grandes Ecoles on your next trip!

I just got from a delightful 10-day trip to Paris, and stayed at an absolutely wonderful 3-star in the 6th(but was closer to Montparnasse than <BR>St. Germain). It was Hotel Aviatic on rue Vaugirard. The air-conditioning was terrific, and needed. And I'm from South Florida! I've been to Paris several times and have always stayed in the St. Germain area, closer to the Seine, but this hotel was so nice that I will stay there from now on. It wasn't a far walk to the Luxembourg Gardens, and was quite close to several Metro lines, Gare Montparnasse, lots of nice cafes and restaurants - and less tourists. In the summer I think that air conditioning would really be a necessity, and certainly keeps the room quieter at night. There are so many beautiful parks in Paris, that you don't need a courtyard at the hotel. It's fun to picnic in the parks at lunchtime, or watch the locals walking dogs or jogging in the mornings. I walked to the lovely Parc Montsouris one morning, and took the Metro to Parc Monceau, which is in a very elegant quarter near Musee Jacquemart-Andre and the Musee Nissim-Camundo. Anyway, my advice is to pick the hotel with the A/C and enjoy the parks and beautiful squares for your "fresh air" activities.<BR> <BR>I was also in Paris the last two weeks of October, in a different hotel near the Luxembourg Gardens, and used the A/C every night, even then.

Jill: Try "Jardin Le Brea",***, 14, Rue Brea, 6th, metro stop: Vavin.<BR>A/C and and courtyard. Totally renovated, 23 rooms on quiet street south of Luxembourg Gardens.

Hi<BR>The Marronners at 21 rue Jacob has a pretty courtyard as well as a/c<BR>Be warned that some rooms are quite small. This hotel is praised very often; you can do a search here or look in guidebooks

Hotel Des Marronnier on Rue Jacob, as Elaine suggests is a fine hotel, and second only to my favorite, which is Hotel Le Regent on Rue Dauphine, which I presume is the one you are also considering. Either is fine, but I suggest that the courtyard of the Marrionniers, which is in front of the building, and between the street and the front door is of relatively little use. Whichever of these 2 that you end up in you'll be fine. Have a great trip!! best wishes

it's been quite a while since I've been at the Marronniers, but I wasn't thinking of the front yard I don't think, but the small courtyard just off the breakfast room. Unless my memory is faulty, I didn't think they were the same thing
