PARIS, 18e, Montmatre, Safe Area? TERRAS HOTEL?

I have reserved a room at the TERRAS HOTEL in the 18e (Montmatre) area and wonder if the area is safe for walking during day and early evening. We have chidren - concerned about Pigalle area.

Guide books differ on the "charm" of this area. Frommer's says its great and a website says its tacky. Anny comments?

Montmarte is where Sacre Coeur is located, a beautiful site in itself. However, that's about all this place has to offer. Montmarte is pretty far out from where most of the interesting sites are, and it is not safe for tourists at night. My sister & I were in Paris last summer and advised to be out of this area by nightfall. I've heard of some scary stories in that area. You may want to look into the 11e (the Bastille district) for a less expensive place to stay. We stayed there and felt very safe there. It's much like Greenwich Village, lots of bars and young crowds, but definitely an up and coming area! Have fun!

Montmartre is an attractive area by day but it is definitely not so at night. Although I think the 'danger' is sometimes ovestated, you would not be comfortable out at night or on the metre here. We stay at the Hotel de Nice on the rue de rivoli, it is a 2 star and not luxurious but it is clean and has bathrooms in the rooms and the location is very good. Easy walking distance to the Marais, across the river to Ile St Louis etc and it is on the main east-west metro that goes past Louvre, Champs Elysees, Arc de triumph, La Defense etc

Hey Jen.

From the different mails you received I can see that there apparently is some sort of confusion about "Montmartre" and Pigalle.

The montmartre area is charming - beautiful and interesting, but very often people are speaking about Montmartre and Pigalle in one. The area with Pigalle and Place Clichy is bad and you should avoid it in the evening. In don't know where your hotel is located but if its here, you should definately look for something else. Montmartre is the area just around the Sacre-Cæur and then it continues on the other side of "the hill" away from the Pigalle area.
I have lived in Paris myself and know from both other people and holiday catalogues that travelagencies avoid referring to the Pigalle area - using "Montmartre" and then it turns out to be Pigalle and surroundings after all. They probably found out that they can't sell as good if they use the the correct name. Also you should get closer to the center in order to see attractions. Somebody mentioned 11 arr., which is very nice and then there are 7. arr and 5 arr. as well.
Hope this helps you somehow.

Sanne
