Paris, 11th Arrondissement?

Hi, for a change, I'm staying at a hotel near the Oberkampf Metro stop. I'm pretty familiar with Paris (been there many times), but I've never stayed in a hotel near there. Are there any shops and restaurants worth checking out? I'm only there for one day. I've been to the Merci store, and I've walked around Canal St-Martin.

I know I'm not too far from Marais, etc., but I'm just wondering if there's anything in the immediate vicinity of the hotel that is interesting.

Thanks.

don't know the area well, but have you mapped the hotel address on Google and then street viewed it, for what is in the immediate area of the hotel?

Well, this is old news but Le Chateaubriand is nearby though not in the immediate vicinity--closer to the Goncourt station. I thought the food was superb, and apparently the kitchen is still doing great things.

I almost never shop on vacation, sorry.

Have fun. What's the pilgrimage for this time?

A lot of food shops, cafes, restaurants in that area, particularly along Parmentier and Oberkampf streets.

Cafes:
- LePlein Soleil at Oberkamp/Parmentier @ Parmentier Metro is a friendly cafe with good food and great outdoor terrace
- L'Autre Cafe

Sorry, posted too quickly...

A lot of food shops, cafes, restaurants in that area, particularly along Parmentier and Oberkampf streets. It's a great area that feels very local, not touristy with a great mix of trendiness and ethnic diversity.

Some favorites in that area...

- LePlein Soleil Cafe at Oberkamp/Parmentier @ Parmentier Metro is a friendly cafe with good food and great outdoor terrace
- L'Autre Cafe: http://www.lautrecafe.com/ - open continuously and late: serves a great prix fixe breakfast, lunch, and dinner - or can just go for drinks, live music sometimes - and free wifi. Lovely interior ambience

- Le Cave du Daron: http://www.lacavedudaron.com/ - nice wine shop with interesting selection - with a good size bar inside for wines by the glass, open a bottle, and usually a charcuterie/cheese option

- Along Parmentier
- there are great boulangeries/patisseries
- a good bookstore at rue des Trois Bornes, I believe

- Lots of lively bars along Oberkampf

-Le Villaret: 13 Rue Ternaux - upscale, but casual bistro with decent prices - amazing cheeseboard

- Outdoor market: Park area on Richard Lenoir median at end of Oberkampf - Tuesdays and Fridays, I think

Around Canal St Martin - at the end of Parmetier toward Goncourt metro/hospital turn left and you'll run into some fun restaurants:

- La Madonnina: Italian restaurant, lively 10 rue Marie-et-Louise (10th)
- Their sister restaurant at the triangle is a lively pizza place, whose name I'm not remembering

The other direction down Parmentier - off the main road and off-the-beaten path:
- The Country Girl - amazing crepe restaurant,
6 Passage Saint-Ambroise: http://www.davidlebovitz.com/2009/12/west-country-girl/

Also interesting to walk into the 20th from that Oberkampf.

Richard Lenoir is Thusdays and Sundays. Bistro Paul Bert gets good reviews. I had one great meal there and one awful one!

There are two markets on the boulevard Richard Lenoir. The Popincourt market at Richard Lenoir and Oberkampf is Tuesday and Friday. The one at the Bastille is Thursday and Sunday.

Bookmarking this - We'll be spending 10 days in an apartment in the 11th in late September. We've been to Paris many times, but have never stayed in this neighborhood. It's good to have some recommendations, especially for The Country Girl crêperie. Salted butter caramel...yum.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll be in Paris coming Monday, by the way.

Leely, nothing really. I decided to visit Venice for the Biennale and figured I'll stop in Paris on my way home. It's the summer sales and I guess it's an incentive to buy clothes as well as chocolates and whatever else. I'll probably stop by for the Morellet exhibition at Beaubourg. I have one of his multiples in my small collection.
