Palermo Airport to Erice too long?
Is it too much to drive to Erice from the Palermo airport following a flight? Too tiring? We're in our fifties. We would rather go right to Erice rather than stay in an airport hotel if possible. What was your expreience in doing this? Thank you.

I did not do this on my trip, we spent 3 nights in Palermo following our flight. It could be ok if you don't get lost. We got quite lost from Palermo to Erice, but then again we did that the whole trip! Are you skipping over Palermo or coming back to it? Are you spending the night in Erice?

We are ending our trip with three days in Palermo. We would like to spend three nights also in Erice. The itinerary which is already set is like this:
Sept. 16, 17, 18, & 19 open
20 thru 26 rented a villa
south of Ragusa, near Modica
and will make side trips
27 & 28 open (Taormina?)
29 - Oct. 2 rented at an
agritourismo in the interior
near Gangi/side trips planned
Oct. 3-5 Palermo
Thank you for answering my post.

I only spent a few hours in Erice (there was very thick fog). From what I could see there was really only enough there to occupy a half a day. Do you have day trips planned from there? I was also there during Siesta, but in general there really didn't seem to enough to do to occupy 3 nights. Unless, of course, relaxing is the goal! I guess most of us forget that when we travel.
The NY Times has an article this weekend on Ragusa & Modica. You could do the 1st night and part of the following day in Erice, and then head to the Agrigento area. I stayed in a lovely place in Sciacca (it's in-between Selinunte & Agrigento if you are interested in archaeological sites). It's called Verdetecnica, they have a few different size apartments that can be rented. They are very spacious and rustic. http://www.verdetecnica.com/

Thanks very much for your tip on the article in the Times, as well as your other suggestions. I thought while at Erice, we could spend a day in Trapani and also visit Segesta and possibly the nature preserve to the north.

There is a direct bus from the Palermo Airport to Trapani bus station from Monday through Saturday at 12:50 p.m., arriving at 14:00, and connecting to local buses up the hill to Erice. I would not drive after a transatlantic flight (although if you're originating in Milano or Roma, it would be OK).

Correction: the Segesta Bus from Palermo Airport to Trapani leaves at 12:45 p.m. Monday thru Saturday and arrives 13:55. Fare is 5.68 Euros. Source: www.gesap.it (Palermo Airport Site)
