I don't usually do hotel recommendations.

But "reasonably priced bed & breakfast or hotel" in central Oxford is generally a contradiction in terms, though someone might know of one.

Out of term time (and September's definitely out of term), you might find what you want at http://www.oxfordrooms.co.uk/. Not all rooms listed are in the real centre of the city, and there's a bit of a tendency for respectably elderly colleges to feature newish, and often dull, rooms: it might take a bit of digging to unearth decent medieval rooms in a proper quadrangle. But I'd have thought most visitors would rather settle for less comfort in a 14th century room over a clone of a Motel 6.

So check what you're being offered, and precisely where it is. Everywhere on the system, though, is within at most a mile's easy (and almost always, pretty) walk of the central crossroads.

It would help to know your budget.

I have stayed at Balkan Lodge on Iffley Road which is near a bus stop. You could walk, but it's a long, long walk. Also have stayed a number of times at the Newtown Guest House on Abington Road near Folly Bridge, also near a bus stop. They are both clean, have a good breakfast,and are reasonably priced. Most of the other places listed in the B&B guides are as Flanner says, much more expensive, so I've stuck to these two places as B&Bs in Oxford.

We haven't stayed here but a couple (different) people liked it: www.thebutteryhotel.co.uk. It's very centrally located, which is hard to find in a B&B in Oxford.

For a single £130 is a pretty generous budget

The Randolph is probably out. But if one of the colleges doesn't pan out I'd maybe look at the Old Bank. It might just squeeze in under your budget - but it is right on the High Street across from St Mary's Church. Might be worth a splurge.

Or for less the Buttery is well located and should be under your budget.

janisj - The $200 I mentioned is actually for a double. The Buttery Hotel is something I am considering as I had also saw it on TA. I will check out your recommendations. Thanks.

My two favorites are The Marlborough House Hotel www.marlbhouse.co.uk. I think you can get a double there for under $200. It's about a 20 minute walk into Oxford centre but the buses aong Woodstock are frequent and easy.

Another good choice is the Remont. Both these places especially the Remont are a bit more more upscale than the Buttery and quieter. The Remont is is also along Woodstock but again very easy access to Oxford and surrounding areas. A double room there will fit your budget. A family room is only 140 GBP. www.remont-oxford.co.uk

The Buttery is well located. I've never stayed there but do know that during school term the area can on weekends get quite noisy.

Just a note on The Buttery, the back rooms are always quiet in my experience and I like the view over the rooftops.
