Overnight train between Prague and Budapest - any major considerations?

Jump to last reply

We are putting the finishing touches on our exciting upcoming trip and were looking to save time on one day getting between Prague and Budapest by using a night train (we will already have been in Vienna and Bratislava, so hoping not to necessarily backtrack through those places if possible).

According to the RailEurope website, the details are as follows:
Budapest to Prague - leave ~2000, arrive ~0400 AM, cost 15 USD
Prague to Budapeast - leave ~0000, arrive~0830, cost 36 USD

We can't figure out why one direction is twice the cost of the direction, but that aside, do you have any thoughts on departure/arrival times, ease of getting to/from the train station from city center areas, safety/people traffic in the train stations during those times, etc.?

Has anyone traveled either of these routes, and can you comment on the experiences or provide any tips/advice? I've read that there are some "urban myths" about thefts/crime on these night trains - has this even been backed up by any real-life experiences that you know of?

Thank you.
