overnight in Vienna
My plane gets into Vienna airport at around 2 PM from Frankfurt and leaves again for Croatia the next day at 1 PM. I know we have to calculate checkin time and travel to/from the airport, so...can we sleep at moderate cost in Vienna center and see some of the city. If so, what and where do you suggest? Or should we just sleep at the airport?

Oh, go into town. Vienna is lovely. We did a day trip there from Salzburg with our son-n-law who'd never seen the place and saw plenty in a day, arriving at 10 a.m. and leaving about 6 or so. Plenty of moderate pensions in the city center--Pertschy and Nozzek are favorites on this board. We've stayed at the former and found it fine. You can take a tram ride around the ring and see many of the major buildings of the city, walk the Hofburg palace grounds, stroll the Graben to see the plague column, see St. Stephen's cathedral and stroll down Kartnerstrasse, main shopping street. Have a lovely dinner late in the evening, say at Plachutta where you can sample tafelspitz, the favorite dish of the emporer, and have breakfast coffee and pastries at one of the famous coffeehouses of Vienna. don't miss it.

We were in Vienna in November of 2007. The airport is quite close to the city, and we took a bus from their to the center city for only a few euros each. It seems to me the trip only took about 20 minutes.
We stayed at the Schweizer Pension.

Centrally located, walk to all the sights, cost was about 80 euro as I recall, spotlessly clean, beautiful breakfast, friendly owners.
We loved Vienna and this pension. I think it is worth the short trip and the overnight in the city.

Definitely take the train into town. Take the S bahn for just a bit more than 3 euro per person or a taxi for 32 euro(dedicated airport taxi counters). The CAT train is just a few minutes faster than the S bahn but charging a hefty premium. The benefit of CAT however is when you depart from Vienna.
We have been staying in Vienna for the last few days(coming from Frankfurt and eventually heading to Dubrovnik as well). We are considering of taking the CAT train to the airport because they can check us & our luggage in at their downtown station. For 24 euro they will pick us up from the hotel, take our luggage and give us our boarding passes at the downtown terminal. We are planning to order a pick up in the morning, check in, then walk to the nearby MAK museum and maybe even stop for cake at the Cafe Oberlaa before hopping on the CAT to the airport.

We will be staying in September in the Pension Suzanne. It has good reviews.
