Overnight from Amsterdam: choose Brugge or Ghent?
We will be in Amsterdam in late May and have enough time to do one overnight. We had thought we would do Brugge but have now heard that Ghent is wonderful. I think it would be too rushed to try to do both on the out and back from AMS, so what is the preference among you Belgian experts out there?

While I agree that Bruges probably has more to see it is a three, four hour train ride and IMO not worth it for one night.
You might consider Delft. It is only an hour from Amsterdam and a very charming little town which would be perfect for quick overnight trip.

The question was Brugge, or Ghent, not "anywhere else?", right?
Brugge is smaller, more charming, cozy, compact, walkable, etc..
Ghent is more bustling and "city" like.
For a lot of people, that is enough information to make a decision.
Personally, Brugge blows me away every time I go.

Antwerp is a nice and fun city too. Brugge is beautiful, but kind of quiet after day-trip tourists go home. It is the Venice of Belgium, so it depends on what you want. Liege was fun at night, because of all the college kids and bars with awesome beer and carbonnade
