Oslo/Norway in a Nutshell sightseeing help needed

We will be coming into Oslo from a repositioning cruise at the end of April and are trying to work out our sightseeing plan since I NEED to get the airfare booked ASAP. What I would really like to do is the Norway in a Nutshell trip to the fjords, but I just can't get the times to work out right with our schedule without adding on 2 additional days to the trip. Is there a shorter version of the trip that can be done in one full day in April, or are there other areas that we could explore to see some of the magnificent Norwegian scenery that are closer to Oslo? Would driving be a better option than the train/boat/bus/train? I am willing to shave off the Bergen end of the Nutshell, but that still doesn't get us back into Oslo in time for a morning flight the next day. Any help from Norwegian posters would be a great help.. Oh also, there is a fjord sightseeing cruise (2 hours) in Oslo, does this one really show beautiful fjord scenery, or is it mainly a boat trip around town,?
Thank You

Not sure anything in the Oslo area compares to what i call in my four decades of European travel the Norway in a Nutshell extravaganza - one of my very top travel experiences ever.

Have you looked at a map? The Norway in a Nutshell takes you all the way across the coutnry and then you have to get back. No way to do this in part of a day except by helicopter.

Oslo itself is on a fjord (although not nearly as dramatic as those further west) it's not a boat ride around town - since the town doesn;t have canals.

Thanks for the reality check, after spending an entire afternoon looking at train, bus,boat/ferry, plane schedules, sold out hotels for our dates, etc. I have decided that Norway in a Nutshell will either have to wait, or be something that I just dream about. It is a fluke that we are even going to Oslo, probably won't get back to Scandinavia in this lifetime. Oh well, so many places, so little time.

Poconolady - to my knowledge if you leave Oslo on the about 8am train and get off at Myrdal and take the train down to Flam and then ferry to Gudvagen and train to Voss you can then get back to Oslo the same night

but you would have to leave Oslo early.

I believe that a one day round trip is an option offered in the Norway in a Nutshell packages.

In April the r/t Oslo is only do-able with an overnight train returning to Oslo. The early 6:15 departure is not offered. I don't really want to sit up all night on a train and then spend the next whole day sitting in a plane going overseas. I am now in the process of checking on flying into Bergan the day before and doing the oneway Bergan to Oslo trip. Neither way is perfect, I just want to see the magnificent scenery without the trip being too tiring.I truly don't want to miss this experience. Is there a preferance for doing it from Myrdal or from Voss? Also, what will the light be like at the end of April--if we catch a 17:52 train from Myrdal to Oslo-will we still have enough light to see the scenery on this stretch of the trip?

The trip is really for the fjords, and you should consider the Myrdal to Oslo leg just a bonus if you go through it before dark. You might see the high elevation area, but it will be too dark for the rest, which is pleasant, but not spectacular.
