Oslo or Stockholm?
Can stay one day in either city on way to Dublin. Our interests are historical sites, scenery, museums. Both look good, I have trouble making decisions. Any help to do so would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would choose Stockholm. The skansen, the Wasa museum and a boat tour of the city would fill one day. Or leave out the boat tour to see the old part of Stockholm, which is more interesting than the old part of Oslo.

Sorry - Oslo is quite a small city and has a limited amount to see/do. Stockholm is a much somewhat larger city (about 80K versus 600K for Oslo - neither is large) and has a plethora of sights (Old Town, Royal Palace changing of guard and palace tour, Skansen, Vasa Museum and a host of art and history msueums, a gorgeous setting with many islands in the archipelago and boat trips out to several of them including Drottingholm Castle.
Oslo has several museums but not nearly as much to see do as Stockholm.
But either has way more than enough to see in one day.

Thank you all for your responses.
We are travelling from Newark, NJ to start a tour in Galway which ends in Dublin on the 9th of Sept. Since United doesn't fly to Galway, we are arriving in Dublin on the 28th of Aug and I plan to take a train to Galway to join the tour that evening.
I have made flights to both Oslo and Stockholm that can be cancelled within 24 hours without penalty.
If we leave on Aug 25 (hubby's 71st b'day!!), arrive in Stockholm around noon on the 26th, then go to Dublin am of the 28th, would that give us enough time to see the sights in Stockholm? Basically one day as the 26th will be recovering from jetlag.
Can leave on the 23rd, (too many miles to use for the 24th)but DH really doesn't want to be away from his great love too long (Josie, our 2 year old mutt)
I think Stockholm wins the vote but now opinions on when to leave are appreciated. Thanks again!

I am confused.
Stockholm is 3 hours flying in the wrong direction to Dublin. There is a direct United flight from Newark to Dublin.
Why Stockholm? it's beautiful but 6 hours return out of your way.
You are also stacking 3 hours onto your jetlag. I always find the British Isles to US to be fine for jetlag.

I am using frequent flyer miles and do not have enough for direct flights. Since we have to change planes somewhere I thought we may as well stay a few days. Almost like 2 vacations in one.

Hi again- If I were you I'd add those extra days. One day in Stockholm is not nearly enough…especially with jet lag. My husband felt the same way about his scottie. But we always found a good person to pet sit. The nice thing is that when you come home after the trip the dog will give you a BIG welcome.
Dickie-Gr has posted that it's hot in Stockholm… which is disconcerting. Recently a friend was there in August and reported the same. In the good old days you could always count on decent
weather in Scandinavia.

It was a short heat wave which broke today. Back to a more sensible 25oC tomorrow.

I would personally just use the miles and add cash to go direct to Dublin.
I had a huge argument with my father over routes to Australia last Christmas. I came up with hair brained scheme to save £600 on the flights. He's done the route seven times and will not fly anything but Singapore with one stop. Best airline, best route - always he says. Time is more valuable than money.
He's right.
I have done one too many trip which has left us needing another holiday to recover from the trip.
I have a feeling that sleep and not a tour round Galway may be the first thing on your mind when you land in Ireland.

While NY trave..is correct, you have only 1 day, not a week.
While Stockholm has the Vasa, Oslo has the Kon Tiki.
For one day, I stick with Oslo.
Hope you will fall in love with Scandinavia and returrn to see Oslo and Copenhagen.

Changed departure date for the 23rd, leaving on the 27th for Dublin, so we will have 1/2 day on arrival on the 24th, then 2 full days, in Stockholm. Thanks to all who responded.

Stockholm is lovely! With 2.5 days, including (I'm guessing) jet lag upon arrival, you will need to be selective, but you should be able to see a lot if you think through your priorities in advance. Enjoy!
