Oslo or not?

Me and my husband (age 60) will be visiting Denmark 13 May - 28 May. This is part of a home exchange deal. We return to South Africa on 9 June from Copenhagen. We would like to visit Norway. Bergen and the fjords. At the moment we are thinking of flying into Bergen, pick up our rented car at the airport and spend a few days at perhaps Sogne and Hardanger fjords. After dropping the car, take the train to Oslo and then fly back to Copenhagen.
I do however have second thoughts and do not want to make things to complicated.
My question is: Should we do the trip to Oslo? We will only have a day or so there.
Should we rather do a return flight to Bergen? We will visit the most scenic parts of Sogne fjord by car.
Thank you for your help.

The train journey between Bergen and Oslo is scenic. From Oslo you could take the overnight ferry to Copenhagen. But how long are you spending in Norway? From 28th May until 9th June? then you have plenty of time around the fjords and time for a day or two in Oslo.

Thank you, dyoll! We will be in Norway from 27 May - 7 June.
Do the train trip to Bergen-Oslo on 6 June. I also think we should consider the Oslo-Copenhagen (over night) ferry on 7 June?
Erna
Alternatively, we can do the ferry from Copenhagen to Oslo. Train trip to Bergen. Fly back to Copenhagen.
What do you think?

Oslo is definitely worth a couple of days: some great museums as well as the Vigeland sculpture park. Also the fish is incredible - just bring lots of money.

I was somewhat underwhelmed by Oslo, but there are some good museums.

We too were underwhelmed by Oslo. We were there just in October, so very recent. One day there was more than ample for us.

Thank you everyone!
Good to hear from experienced travelers. We will take the overnight ferry Copenhagen to Oslo on 26 May, spend 27 May in Oslo and take the train to Bergen on 28 May. We will fly out from Bergen (to Copenhagen) on 7 June to be in time for our flight back to South Africa on the morning of 9 June.

That is pretty much what we did. We flew from Copenhagen to Oslo then did the NIN to Bergen (loved it!!!) then flew from Bergen back to Copenhagen. It is nice as the flights are so short.

We LOVED Oslo. Had 2 days and 2 nights there (Thon Opera Hotel was great...right next to the train station) Then did the Norway in a Nutshell to Bergen. GREAT! You will have a good time.

I had heard much the same regarding being underwhelmed with Oslo. I only had time for a full day, but I really enjoyed the city. Much, much nicer than I was led to believe. I could've spent longer.

Thank you! I love the planning!
I really appreciate all your help! Should we do the Hop-on bus to save time? Or just do a walking route?

In the city center, just walk.. There are nice areas (Frogner Park being one) that are a bit further afield. Public transport is more than excellent. Also consider taking the ferry across to Bygdøy from the City Hall stop (Radhus)

Can I also interest you in an excursion by boat into Oslofjorden?

You can do a hop on hop off boat trip. Boats depart from the City Hall stop, same one where the Bygdøy boats stop.
