Orvieto Accomodations
We will be in Orvieto end of May for two days.. We will be dropping off a rental car ( I believe it's near the train station ), staying overnight and taking a late afternoon train to Rome. We don't have too much time, so we'd like to be centrally located to see some sites and have easy access back to the train station the next day.
We are open to hotels, B & B's - don't want to go too pricey as the actual time in room is limited.

We stayed at Valentina B and B in November and were very pleased with it. It's really quite charming and we felt right at home.

We took a taxi from the train station, which was a good idea since it is a little hard to find.
It is centrally located. We walked all over the town.
On a previous trip to Orvieto we stayed at Hotel Corso, which we liked also, but this time they did not answer our e-mails. We found Valentina's better located anyway.
Orvieto is one of our favorite places, so I know you will enjoy it
Here is our trip report.

Make sure you stay inside the old town (at the top), not in the new area or below. You take the funicular up from the train station and at the top you catch one of the two bus lines (depends on where you decide to stay). What is your budget?
You could easily see the Duomo and do the underground tour.

Byrd - I'll check both out, Thanks!
ky - thanks, I was just trying to figure out the logistics of Orvieto from the funicular and how much time we would have to explore. Those are the two things I was thinking about !
We will be dropping off the rental near the train station and taking the funicular up, I wasn't sure how close it was to the main areas. Budget wise - like to stay under $120 USD if possible. Doing a quick search, it seems like there are multiple options near 100 Euro.
We will be there on a Sunday and Monday, do you know if there are any many closed sites those days?

Ky - do you know if the underground tour needs to be reserved in advance ? Admittedly, I'm pushing my limits on fighting claustrophobia with this one. But, considering we've booked a Scavi tour in Rome, it's great preparation. Decided I can't miss out or have regrets.

It usually doesn't although space is limited. There are several in English during the day. I guess if a big tour group came in, they could book up all the spots. The ticket office is across the piazza from the Duomo (with your back to the front of the Duomo) to the left side (not the tourist office).
If your car is Hertz, it's about a half block walk to the funicular/train station. When you get up top, you are outside the old town sort of. You won't want to walk to your hotel as it will be uphill from where you get off the funicular. Most B&B's or hotels will have directions/maps and list which bus (A or B)to take when you get off the funicular.
INFO:
From the railway station you can reach the centre of Orvieto by using the Sistema di Mobilità Alternativa FUNICOLAR + MINIBUS.
FUNICULAR RUNNING TIMES
Weekdays: from 7.20am to 8.30pm every 10 minutes
Holidays: from 8am to 8.30pm every 15 minutes
The funicular runs coincide with the Line A and Line B minibus rides into and from the old town centre.
I'm not sure how the tickets are done now. It used to be you could buy just a funicular ticket for .75€ and if you wanted to take the bus also, you paid a little more for a combo ticket (about .90€).

In August we stayed at the Hotel Viriglio. It is in the center of the old town. Our room faced the Duomo.
It was very hot last August in Italy...isn't it always? This hotel has AC which we appreciated. In May you might not need the AC.
In the evening we sat outside the hotel with a glass of wine and people watched.
