Ortisei or Castelrotto

Ortisei or Castelrotto
By recommendation of Fodorites, I will travel to either Ortisei or Castelrotto (or surrounding areas). I have a car and will be staying for two nights. What city is the best for a couple that has never been to the Dolomites? I am also looking for a suggestion for a very reasonably priced B & B. Other threads have mentioned some hotels such as Hotel Zum Wolf or Cavallino D oro. Also, what is half board and full board mean.

Summer - I have a slight preference for Ortisei for ease of access to the Val Gardena cable cars, and I think it makes a better touring base too.
But they are only 20 mins apart by car and both are excellent choices ... so really you can't go wrong
In Ortisei you can't go wrong with:

Similarly in Castelrotto Zum Wolf is a fine choice.

Half board = bed, breakfast & evening meal.
Full board = bed, breakfast, lunch & evening meal.
The hotels I've listed above are all B & B only, I think.

One of my favorite places to stay in the area is Pensione Uhrerhof . It is just outside Ortisei in a small village, Pufels/St Ulrich.

I just noticed from your other posts on Fodors that you are quite the expert in european travel. Here is my current summer itinerary - any help from you or others would be appreciated.
1. Day 1- Plane from U.S. arrives Paris at 6:30 AM and departs at 4:00 PM to Genoa- spend day in Paris, night in Genoa Italy.
2. Day 2-5 Cinque Terre
3. Day 6-7 Innsbruck
4. Day 8-9 Garmish
5. Day 10-11 Ortisei
6. Day 12-13 Venice
I know that this is very ambitious. I have many free hotel stays with different companies (Hilton, Marriott, and Westin) therefore the constant travel.

Certainly ambitious - your're right
My main reservation would be the CT-Innsbruck trek. Looks like you'd be spending 8 hrs+ on the train
Have you considered doing it overnight to save a day?

Hi Summer,
check viamichelin.com for the itineraries. You are right regarding the 5 hours (more or less) between the Cinque Terre and Innsbruck, but it is on motorways with really heavy traffic. Everything will depend on how comfortable you will feel with it.
