Orta San Giulio Lodging
This town looks like the perfect spot to cap off next year's trip. Has anyone stayed here who could give a recommendation? So far, it seems all the places I like are not within walking distance of town, which (since we have been known to consume wine) is relatively important. Grazie!

Have you looked on AirBnB? I've not done it myself but you might find something there, even just for a night. Something to watch out for in Lago d'Orta is that it is an extremely popular wedding destination. I recall that you are taking your trip in October, which is not a popular wedding month in Italy, but if you are going to Lago d'Orta on a weekend, you can't rule out the possibility of some kind of celebration overtaking a hotel. Booking a very small b&b is often the solution (provided it is not right next door to a huge lakeside restaurant).

Wow Bob, great to hear from you. Tracy was just talking about the lodging you recommended in Lugano (Stella D'Italia) and San Quirico d'Orcia (Palazzo del Capitano). Those remain two of our favorite places we have stayed.
And, of course, our favorite Bob story (from 2005) was when we dined at Cane e Gatto in Siena. From my trip report: "The whole bill, including two bottles of wine came to about 190 Euros. At the end of the meal, as people were getting up, we struck up a conversation with a couple (he was from Boston, and I was in need of another baseball fix). As we chatted, I casually asked how they knew about this restaurant. She said, “Oh, I am on a travel board.”
This had all the making of a Fodor’s moment, so I asked, “Oh really, what board?” She replied, “Fodors (Easygoer).” “Me, too,” I said.
Then, in an Italian-thread minute, she blurted out, “Bob The Navigator rocks!”
Thanks again Bob. Hope you are feeling well!!

Our time in Orta San Giulia also came via suggestions in Bob's reports, but this was several years ago and we stayed at the Hotel Orta, no longer open. The town square is charming and we enjoyed the short boat ride to the island. You will like spending time there.

Hey, maitai, good friends that travel with us often rented an apartment for several days last year in Orta San Giulia that was just gorgeous and that they loved (I've seen pictures of it and it was beautiful, but I don't know how big - there were only two of them).
It can't have been too far walking distance from the town because they are very fond of their wine and she's not in the best of shape. If you like, I can ask them for details.
Hope you're doing well, Bob. Nice to hear from you!
