opinions on hotel choice in Greece

We are planning a trip to Greece in the middle of July. I'm trying to decide between two hotels. This would be for 3 nights, 2 at the start of our trip and one at the end. Hotel Attalos or Athens Gate. There is a 354 Euro price increase to stay at Athens Gate, which is about $475. That would pay for a whole lot of souvlaki! I'm leaning towards sticking to Attalos. I'd appreciate some opinions on this. I'm also posting a separate question on a Delphi Meteora tour if you'd care to comment. Thanks in advance

It's been awhile - were in Greece in May '05 and again in '06 - but stayed at the Attalos both times. First trip we used points for two nights at the Marriott before going to Santorini and Crete, then returned to Athens at the end for a few days and stayed at the Attalos. All the difference in the world, location-wise. From the Attalos you can walk to most of the sites you'd want to visit (might not want to walk to the archeological museum), have dinner in the Plaka - only place in Greece we found the traditional lemon roasted potatoes with dinner instead of fries - and then wander around the Plaka before the short stroll back to your hotel.

Breakfast was adequate, staff pleasant enough. Clean hotel and better than many of the lower priced European hotels. I understand some of the rooms are a bit on the small side - daughter stayed at start and end of a trip in late '03 and had one of the smaller ones on the first stay - but we had nice-sized rooms both times. Also had front rooms with a balcony on the street where you could lean out past the privacy wall between balconies just a tad and get a view of the Acropolis at night. Don't know anything about Athens Gate but can certainly recommend the Attalos. Would stay there again myself if returning to Athens.

Dont know anything about the other hotel, but we enjoyed our stay at Athens Gate last Sept. Excellent location, great bar overlooking the Acropolis where breakfast was served...all in all would definitely stay there again - we paid €125 a night.

There are so many more choices besides Athens Gate & Attalos. I have stayed in 17 central hotels in the last 3 years, most reviewed here & also more in the Attalos price range. Several much nicer too.

Nearly all of them should feature on major sites such as booking.com or venere.com
Take a look at what ones you like the look of & comes up at the right price. I will be happy to give more detail on any of them to help make the final choice.

Hi

A terrific feature of the Attalos is the rooftop bar. At night you have a wonderful view of the Acropolis lit up. The hotel is in an excellent location. Try your luck - ask for a room with a view of the Acropolis.

We stayed at Athens Gate last June and it was no where near the price you are quoting. We were at the end of our trip and tired, and since I am somewhat mobility impaired, took the double decker tours from directly across the street. The view of the Acropolis from the bar and at breakfast is spectacular.

I've stayed at the Attalos. The room was clean, the location is safe, and it's very convenient to the Plaka/Acropolis as well as the Monastiraki Metro Station.

When I read that a hotel is chosen because it has a roof top view of the acropolis and has a great location, I just want to say, that is the case with dozens of hotels in the area. That should not be the only criteria for selection.

Chania of course the Attalos has other things going for it other than the roof top bar. As mentioned in my post the location is excellent. The rooms are adequate and the breakfast is so so. But it still represents good value and I would definitely stay there again. A few doors down there is the lovely Cecil Hotel (it too has a roof top terrace but it's just that. No chairs, tables etc.) Perhaps you could be more constructive and suggest some "of the dozens of hotels" that's in the OP's budget.
