OPINION URGENT? Saint John Lateran good for first time Rome Tourist?

Hi,
Does anyone have opinions about Saint John Lateran area?
I am visiting rome for the first time and hope I could get some input.
Thanks

Don't mind to bus, but is it a hassle? Easy transportation?

It's OK - but it depends on how long you have and what other sights to see. I wouldn't consider it in the top 10. (I din;t see it until my 3rd tri to Rome). IMHO San Clemente is much more fascinating.

St. John Lateran is the one and only cathedral in Rome. I think it's a wonderful church to visit.

I think you are asking if the area around Saint John Lateran is a good place to stay, not whether it is necessarily a good church to visit. Right??

The area is fine. If you're in Rome for a while it wouldn't be bad at all, though a bit out of the way for some things. If your visit is short and you have a long list of must-sees, this could be an inconvenient location. Unless you're willing to go-go-go all day long (I'm okay with that, for example, except when it's hot). I almost always walk or taxi in Rome, so I'm not sure about the bus lines from San Giovanni in Laterano.

Where exactly is the apartment/hotel you're considering?

Those stops are actually even farther out than San Giovanni in Laterano. Where by the Vatican are you thinking of staying?

I wouldn't stay in this area. I would move up the Via Merulana and stay near Maria Maggiore.

A good hotel within walking distance of Maria Maggiore is the Hotel Aberdeen.

I wouldn't stay near the Vatican. I don't think the area is very exciting at night.

We stayed in Re di Roma area when we first went to Rome and very much regretted it. Its quite far out and it was a pain to get in and out every day twice a day. We ended up staying at the B&B at night most nights because it was a pain, and so we missed out on walking around at night and eating lovely dinners. I would never stay out that far again.
