Only a European could answer this question probably

Would I be able to park my car at the Rome airport without actually flying anywhere? I just want to park my car at the airport and then take the train into Rome, is this possible? The parking lot on the access highway is pretty cheap.

I might qualify as a European, about 8 generations removed. If so, my answer is yes, of course you can park your car there. Go for it.

So it's true that anyone can just go to the airport and park their car at this long term parking lot. So if I want to spend a week in Rome I could drive from Florence and park my car at the airport without flying somewhere and then just pick up my car after my week-long visit. How sure are you about this?

I am a European and I have never ever parked a car at Rome Airport, but I am very qualified to answer your question YES, you can park your car at the airport car park and take a taxi or bus back to the city. Actually, I have never been to *any* airport where they check if you are actually flying. Please note that airport parking is usually very expensive.

Last year we drove from Florence to Rome and parked our rental car in long term parking, and took a cab into Rome. We negotiated price with the cab driver before we got in and he drove us straight to our hotel where we were spending the night. No muss and no fuss and not that expensive either.

Nanet, was the long-term parking lot safe? How big was it and how full was it? Any other details would be appreciated. Thanks.

Not a direct answer to your query, but, Matt, I've assumed you have ruled out option of leaving your car in Florence and taking train down to Rome? Travel time on Eurostar between Florence-Rome is only 1 hour, 35 minutes.

If the concern is not driving in the city, you might also consider parking at a smaller train station. Orvieto, if you're coming from the north, is very easy. Right off the autostrade, park for minor fee at the train station where hourly trains get you to the center of Rome in about an hour. Otherwise, parking at Fiumicino airport is ok but as others say it costs more, requires a shuttle to the train to the city (which takes longer than coming from Orvieto in the end). Actually, driving in Rome isn't so bad...

Matt, I posted earlier but it didn't come up. The lot is safe looking, clean and well lit, we arrived back to the car after dark and it was fine. It was a large lot and with people coming and going, not full. I would do it again. Be sure to negotiate first with the cab driver, you would pay less without luggage and can work out a deal with that long of a drive, as we did.
