One Week

If you had 10 days in October to vacation anywhere in Western Europe where would it be and why?

I am traveling with my boyfriend who has NEVER been to Europe. I finally convinced him that is better than our standard Aruba trip.

Think Romantic. Think Drinks! Think Day Trips. Think beautiful things to see.

Thanks Everyone!!

Brigette,
My vote would be for Ireland. For someone who has Never been to Europe, Ireland is friendly, inexpensive, beautiful and, they spead English. Try www.sceptretours.com For about $500 each you get Aer Lingus (my favorite), a rental car and 6 or 7 nights of B&B vouchers. And remember - Guiness makes you strong.

Brigette: If it's his first time, the culture differences are probably worth discussing so that his trip is a good one.

My first trip to Europe was to Paris in '84 and I didn't have a good time. I had just moved to Frankfurt from Pennsylvania and my attitude and expectations were not conducive to enjoying my new surroundings. In fact, a coworker and travel veteran told me that I forgot to take an "open mind". He was right and ever since I've had the best trips wherever I went.

I say this only as a reminder that although I personally like Aruba, it's seems more "American" than "European" to me.

Since you are going in October, you can choose between many good spots, but weather can be a factor. Paris is great anytime, but seems better in the spring. I like late spring for Holland and summer for Germany and Austria. The weather would still be decent in Tuscany. We have a plan to visit Rome, Florence and Tuscany next May or September since it is a little cooler and less crowds. Maybe that could be a possibility for both of you. I've just finished "Under the Tuscan Sun" and after reading it, I can't wait to go. I think it would be all that you seek.

Brigette,

If Aruba is one of his favorite places, I assume he likes beaches.

Rome and the Amalfi coast would be a great combination of European culture and charm with sunshine, beaches and beautiful sceanery thrown in. In early October the weather will still be nice and the summer crowds should start to ebb.

You could probably do a similiar trip in Spain Barcelona - Costa Del Sol - Madrid.

Good luck
Aileen

My vote is to spend 5 days in Southern Italy. My wife and I spent time in Sorrento and it was magnificent. A day trip to Capri...You can stay in Positano (the San Pietro is unbelievable) or travel to Amalfi or Ravello. Hard to go wrong in any of these places. The views are wonderful!
the other 5 days spend in Florence or Venice.... Romantic.

To get some warmer weather your definitely want to be South of the Alps, which makes Italy the logical choice.
I agree with Michael regarding Southern Italy, although my personal preferences would be Venice, Verona, Tuscany and Portofino/Cinque Terre. Plenty of romance at the first two, beauty in Tuscany, and beaches etc.in Portofino, and all without overdoing the travelling distances. Maybe rent a car from Verona onwards.
