Anyone done this before. National wants to charge a $ 500.00 fee for a Nice to Rome trip

You're going from one country to another. The car, registered in France, can't be then rented in Italy. That's the reason for the fee.

Try to get to first get to Italy for your drive to Rome.

I am flying into Nice departing from Rome 5 days later. So to avoid the fee take a train then rent in Italy after France?

Exactly. Try renting the car in Ventimiglia or San Remo.

Interesting...our extra charge for picking up in France and dropping off in Spain is around $350.00. I agree...if you can, avoid the extra charge especially since it is so high.
