One night in Vienna
We (2 adults, 3 teens) are travelling by train from Venice to Prague and arrive in Vienna around 9pm. We have only the next morning to sightsee before going on to Prague at 2pm. Please help with a centrally located hotel (I have just emailed the Pertschy as it seems well-loved on the boards) - we are not on a budget but don't want to spend excessively on a hotel as we will be there for so little time. Also suggestions as how to best use our limited time in Vienna would be very welcome.

I hope you can get into the Pertchy, it's in a perfect location and it's a swell hotel. Drop you stuff and head for a late dinner to Plachutta at Wollzelle 38, walking down the Graben and past Stephansdom and taking a right on Schuler Strasse. Take the first left past the Cathedral, and then the first right. That should have you on Wollzelle. Just keep walking until you see the place about 3 long blocks away. It serves tafelspitz and other viennese favorites. It's a nice but reasonably priced place and it stays open until midnight. Return to the Pertchy and sleep well. Arise early. Have breakfast in the cute breakfast room and get on the street early. Repeat some of your trek of last night and look about the Graben with its pestsaule, continue on and tour the interior of Stephansdom, then walk down the main shopping street, the Karnterstrasse and do some window shopping since the stores won't yet be open. Walk by the Opera and take a right onto the main boulevard that rings the town--"The Ring." If at this point it is not yet 10 a.m. jump on the streetcar that circles the ring (I think #2, but check with locals) and ride it around the entire ring to get back off at the Opera where you got on. Enroute you will pass depending on which direction you go, the two big museums (art and history, the Hofburg palace, Parliament, the Rathaus, Burgtheatre, University, Vitive Kirche, Danube, Stadtpark, and return to the Opera--or vice versa) Having departed the streetcar at the Opera stop, pass the Burggarten on your right and the Kuunshistoriches Museum on your left. Take a right at the Burgtor and enter the Heldenplatz of the Hofburg, the main palace of the city. Walk through checking out all the great buildings in the complex including the Spanisch Riding School. Enter the Michaeler Platz and photograph the great statues of the Hofburg. Head off the platz via Kohlmarkt street and stop for pastries and coffee at Demel the most famous pastry shop in Vienna. Return to the Michaelerplatz turn left and take the next street left back to the Pertschy to retrieve your luggage and head back to the Stephansdom to catch the U-bahn to whichever train station you need for your train to Prague. If you can tell me which station you're going to I may be able to help you find a nearby restaurant for your lunch. Alternately you might want to just head a little ways down Karnerstrasse from the Stephansdom(toward the Opera)to have a quick but delicious lunch at Nordsee before returning to the stairs that take you to the underground train near Stephansdom. Have a wonderful time in Vienna. Even for a few short hours, it's a fabulous place to see. Enjoy.

Julie thanks for such terrific and comprehensive information - I will definitely bring it with me. Pertschy emailed me to say they are full that night and offered me the Christina so I will have to check on its location and read some reviews.

Unfortunately, Christina is on the Danube and not as close to the main part of town. Try Pension Nossek only a block over from Petschy. If you don't mind spending more, check out the Konig von Ungarn. It's fabulous and just behind Stephansdom.

HappyTrvlr - Do you mean the Radisson SAS Style Hotel Vienna or the SAS Palais Vienna? Both look very nice. Website rate was Eu229 at Palais and Eu238 at SAS Style. Is that roughly the rate you got? We need 2 rooms since their fire code is only 3 per room and they also charge Eu55 for a rollaway.
Julie - Konig von Ungarn is full that night so they suggested I contact Kaiserin Elisabeth so waiting to hear back. Thanks again.

Radisson SAS Palais. It was created by joining two historic homes. Very nice and convenient location, acroos the street from the statue of Strauss. Friends who are from Vienna recommended it us.

At the Pension Nossek I have been offered "1 double room with bath and toilet for Euro 110,-- incl. breakfast buffet and all taxes. Also a suite for 5 for Euro 241"
At the Kaiserin Elisabeth I have been offered "1 double room with bath for EUR 187,00, plus 1 triple room with bath at EUR 209,00 including breakfast buffet, service and taxes."
Which do you recommend I take? Any idea what the Nossek suite would be like? One of the teens travelling with us is not our child so he can only share a room with my son and not with my husband, daughter and I.

Why don't you do a separate post here headed Vienna, Pension Nossek suite for 5, anyone know it? Otherwise, get on the phone with the Nossek people to get their answer. If you don't get anything useful from either of those, bite the bullet and go with the more expensive but sure option on Kaiserin Elizabeth. It's bound to be nice. Good luck and enjoy your time in Vienna.
