One night in Munich-hotel recommendations?
Looking for a hotel room for a night in Munich (flying in that day). Would like to be as close to the central train station as possible, while also in a safe area. Have read that the immediate vicinity is a bit seedy- has that been your experience? Our only plan is to visit the city center and meander a bit--possibly see St. Peter's (I'd like to see the relics). Would love to keep it under $200 a night. Any recommendations?
Any must-sees?

Just down the street from the train station. Did not feel unsafe walking there:

Thanks Liz! Looks like a great spot! I will file that away for future trips!
But, for anyone else going to Munich soon-- you might try bidding on Priceline. I did and was able to book the Sofitel Munich Bayerpost for $135 for a one night stay. It seems like a very nice place--billed as a 5 star hotel and is very close to the train station as well.

There are tons of hotels of all classes in the immediate vicinity of the main train station. You can pay pretty much whatever you like. One we stayed in recently that we likeed and that is within a block is the Drei Lowen. It was nice. The area is typical of all downtown hustle and bustle areas including a few upscale places and a few "seedy places". I don't feel it is an unsafe area but don't be stupid and take chances in a dark alley.
The area around the train station is close to Karlstor which is the entrance to the Center of the city area. From there is just a few blocks to Marienplatz (by Alte Peter KIrche) and around the corner from the Viktualienmart. The Hofbrau Haus is closeby also. When you visit the Alte Peter Kirche take note of the photos on the pillars at the back of the church that show what it looked like after the WWII bombing, amazing.

I wouldn't call the area seedy, it's just not charming like other neighborhoods in better locations. There are a number of hostels, so you can come across groups of younger folks hanging out. One vacation I took in Munich we stayed at the Mercure specifically to be close to the train station. It was a very nice hotel, I thought, and only about a block or two away.

I love the Hilton in Munich-has an S-bahn station right in the basement with a small shopping area that includes a grocery store. It is 2 stops to the Platz (main area) and also has a real neighborhood right by the hotel. There is also a Holiday Inn about a block away.
