One night in Burgundy

We're passing through Burgundy enroute to Paris with friends, and are trying to decide where to stay. (I know one night's not enough, but we've been there a number of times and are on a tight schedule). We're thinking about Cote d'Or (to try that Locuse dining experience), Chateau de Gilly or Hotel le Cep. Any thoughts? Or any other amazing places we haven't tried? (We've done Hostellerie de Levernois, Chateau de Challenges, Vieux Moulin, etc.) Thanks for your advice!

hello-when we spent 2 nights in burgundy we stayed at a charming relais-chateaux property outside the town of Beaune.
It also had a 3 star restaurant. It is in the small town of Chagny and called
Hostellerie Lameloise. The rooms were charming, everyone was really nice (even to our two kids) and the dinner was memorable. Beaune is a charming town to visit. Burgundy is picturesque to drive through-we hope to visit again one day.
enjoy! visit relais&chateaux website to view properties.

We stayed one night in Beaune this summer - fabulous little town with tons of shopping, restaurants and wine caves! Loved it -can't wait to go back.

Hi, Ken,

I would highly recommend staying at Hotel Le Cep in Beaune. Beaune was very, very enjoyable. Stayed at the Le Cep there last month and it is a wonderful place (and, yes, somewhat pricey -- i.e., $170-$190 a room for double/superior double). It is easy to find and they valet park the car ($10/day in and out privileges). However, it is located within the periphery road, so you won't even need a car; everything in the main part of Beaune is no more than a 15 minute walk away.

We also ate at the 3* Michelin restaurant, Lameloise, mentioned in another post. They have fixed price menus of roughly $70 and $105, if I recall. With wine, it ran about $140/person. Found a few parts of the dinner to be overly salty, but it was a memorable experience nonetheless.

Have a great trip.

John H

Another vote for Hotel le Cep. Great large marble bathroom with tub. A small tower that's part of the hotel complex - you can climb up and take great photos of the city. Easy to walk everywhere (especially if you have only one night there.) Nice courtyard for morning breakfast. Quiet, even though it's located in the city. Staff very friendly and helpful. Pretty sitting areas with good evening bar.

One note of caution. IF you do stay there, don't have dinner at the restaurant that used to be owned by the hotel and is located in the same building as the hotel. I should have realized when it wasn't named by the hotel staff when we asked for dinner suggestions. Food was the worst we had on our trip.

As others have said, Beaune is the town to stay in. Wonderful town. Stay at:
Hotel le Cep
27, rue Maufoux
21200 Beaune
France
Tel: 011-33-3-80-22-35-48
Fax: 011-33-3-80-22-76-80
In Beaune be sure to visit the Hospice - that's a highlight. The Tourist Office has "Safari" van tours of the vineyards that last about two and a half hours, three a day.
Also in Beaune go to the Marche aux Vins - fun wine tasting.
For Paris information go to www.anamericaninparis.com

Ken,

One comment: we were VERY disappointed in the Marche aux Vins. Must have been exposed to perhaps 30 tasting choices and liked perhaps 1 or 2! It was a decent experience (wandering through the "cave" with your souvenir tasting cup trying different bottles of wine. But, the quality was disappointing.

John H.

Thanks to you all. Sounds like the le Cep is quite the popular choice. And that van tour sounds great. Sante!

Hi Ken,
I would definitely vote for Chateau de Gilly. I have stayed there twice and the hotel is beautiful. I would also suggest having dinner. The meals I had there were delicious. You will not be sorry if you stay there. The town of Beaune is nearby and definitely worth a visit.

We just returned form 3 days in Burgundy. We stayed at Chateau de Gilly and were very happy there. It's a beautiful facility with manicured grounds and a fantastic staff. We had a huge room (Grand Luxe) and strongly recommend it. We spent our days touring neigboring towns (Beaune is about a 15 minute drive) and evenings drinking wine by the fireplace.

We dined at the Chateau one night; it was all perfect-the food, service, ambiance. It is probably the most elegant dining room I've ever eaten in.

If you prefer to stay in the town of Beaune, please check out this hotel:

www.lhoteldebeaune.com

I'm very glad we stayed at the Gilly, but I would choose l'hotel de Beaune over le Cep.

Have a great trip,
j.
